From coinductive proofs to exact real arithmetic: theory and applications

Based on a new coinductive characterization of continuous functions we extract certified programs for exact real number computation from constructive proofs. The extracted programs construct and combine exact real number algorithms with respect to the binary signed digit representation of real numbers. The data type corresponding to the coinductive definition of continuous functions consists of finitely branching non-wellfounded trees describing when the algorithm writes and reads digits. We discuss several examples including the extraction of programs for polynomials up to degree two and the definite integral of continuous maps

The RACE Project: Robustness by Autonomous Competence Enhancement

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the aims, the approach, and the results of the European project RACE. The project aim was to enhance the behavior of an autonomous robot by having the robot learn from conceptualized experiences of previous performance, based on initial models of the domain and its own actions in it. This paper introduces the general system architecture; it then sketches some results in detail regarding hybrid reasoning and planning used in RACE, and instances of learning from the experiences of real robot task execution. Enhancement of robot competence is operationalized in terms of performance quality and description length of the robot instructions, and such enhancement is shown to result from the RACE system

Paleogeographic evolution of the Southern Pannonian Basin: 40Ar/39Ar age constraints on the Miocene continental series of notthern Croatia

The Pannonian Basin, originating during the Early Miocene, is a large extensional basin incorporated between Alpine, Carpathian and Dinaride fold-thrust belts. Back-arc extensional tectonics triggered deposition of up to 500-m-thick continental fluvio-lacustrine deposits distributed in numerous sub-basins of the Southern Pannonian Basin. Extensive andesitic and dacitic volcanism accompanied the syn-rift deposition and caused a number of pyroclastic intercalations. Here, we analyze two volcanic ash layers located at the base and top of the continental series. The lowermost ash from Mt. Kalnik yielded an 40Ar/39Ar age of 18.07 ± 0.07 Ma. This indicates that the marine-continental transition in the Slovenia-Zagorje Basin, coinciding with the onset of rifting tectonics in the Southern Pannonian Basin, occurs roughly at the Eggenburgian/ Ottnangian boundary of the regional Paratethys time scale. This age proves the synchronicity of initial rifting in the Southern Pannonian Basin with the beginning of sedimentation in the Dinaride Lake System. Beside geodynamic evolution, the two regions also share a biotic evolutionary history: both belong to the same ecoregion, which we designate here as the Illyrian Bioprovince. The youngest volcanic ash level is sampled at the Glina and Karlovac sub-depressions, and both sites yield the same 40Ar/39Ar age of 15.91 ± 0.06 and 16.03 ± 0.06 Ma, respectively. This indicates that lacustrine sedimentation in the Southern Pannonian Basin continued at least until the earliest Badenian. The present results provide not only important bench marks on duration of initial synrift in the Pannonian Basin System, but also deliver substantial backbone data for paleogeographic reconstructions in Central and Southeastern Europe around the Early–Middle Miocene transition

The article will deal with examining relation and quantification of transport service quality impact in road freight transport. First of all, we need to know what the quality exactly means and then we are able to define the quality in transport field. It is important to evaluate quality characters for future of organizations and also to know how to improve their services and products and have a stable position in the transport business. The impact of transport service quality on the performance of road freight transport is necessary to quantify a level of service quality but also define and objectively evaluate the performance of road freight transport with help of an appropriate set of performance indicators and methods. For examining relation and quantification of transport service quality impact in road freight transport it is necessary to apply an appropriate method. The article includes also practical application of the method.Článok bude pojednávať o skúmaní vzťahu a kvantifikácii vplyvu kvality dopravných služieb na cestnú nákladnú dopravu. Predovšetkým potrebujeme vedieť čo presne znamená “kvalita” a potom budeme schopní definovať kvalitu v oblasti dopravy.

Analysis of social networks in rodents under different environmental conditions

    Get PDF
During the last decade social network analysis has increased in importance as a methodological framework to study inter- and intra-specific relations between animals. Understanding patterns in social network structure have important consequences in biological control, conservation and help us make inferences about parasite/pathogen transmission dynamics in animal systems. Rodents are reservoirs and vectors of several important diseases in Europe and are sensitive to environmental change. As such, we use rodents as model organisms to study the effects of altitude (proxy for global climate change) and habitat disturbance on structure of social networks. Capture-mark-recapture (CMR) sampling was carried out using 16 replicated grids in an 8x8 live-trap array set in both disturbed and undisturbed forests (in terms of recent or former tree cutting) in low (ca. 650 m a.s.l.) and high altitude (ca. 1250 m a.s.l.) in the Italian Dolomites. During 14,336 trap-nights separated to seven two-night sessions every month (April – October 2012), a total of 1,280 rodent individuals were captured, belonging to four species: Apodemus flavicollis, A. sylvaticus, Myodes glareolus and Microtus multiplex. Rodent communities of high-altitude forests were significantly richer and more abundant having two main species (A. flavicollis and M. glareolus) in contrast to communities of low-altitude ones highly predominated by A. flavicollis. In this contribution, we describe the practicalities of constructing contact networks of rodents based on space sharing as revealed from CMR sampling. We present the social network structure of wild rodents under different environmental conditions, both visually and statisticall

New magnetic anomalies of the Outer Carpathians in NE Slovakia and their relationship to the Carpathian Conductivity Zone

    No full text
A hitherto unknown magnetic anomaly has been detected in the framework of assembling magnetic picture of the Slovakian territory. The impressive magnetic object was recognized in the northeasternmost part of Slovakia within the area which is created by sediments of the Flysch belt. This is certain rarity because the Flysch sequence is practically without magnetic rocks. Due to this was obvious that anomaly is caused by an exotic rocks complex, intruded into Flysch sediments. The shape and the character of anomalous body indicated that source of anomaly is located in the shallow depth under surface relatively. The anomaly has been modelled in the 2D. Source of magnetic anomaly was interpreted as the product of Neogene volcanism – neck of intermediate rocks. Besides of this there were found out other minor anomalies within this area which might be caused also by smaller subvolcanic bodies. The Carpathian Conductivity Anomaly is located in the proximity of new observed magnetic anomalies. Due to this fact it is possible to open new view on the importance of this zone. In the case of justification of such interpretation the area might be interesting for its potential prognosis of hydrocarbons occurrence, metallogenetic prominence, as well as possibilities for underground storage of carbon dioxide
