    Political Islam, Internet Use and Willingness to Migrate: Evidence from the Arab Barometer

    This paper investigates the relationship between political Islam, willingness to migrate and Internet use by exploiting the second (2010-2011) and the third (2012-2014) waves of the Arab Barometer. In an effort to explain individual-level willingness to migrate from the Arab world, it investigates the channel through which the more people support political Islam the less they are willing to migrate. At the same time, it explores the fact that the Internet could potentially act as a vehicle of political Islam. Indeed, our findings indicate that there exists a positive relationship between Internet use and individual-level willingness to migrate, while there exists a negative relationship between political Islam and individual-level willingness to migrate. The findings indicate also that there is no significant effect of Internet use on political Islam

    VLA Observations of the Gravitational Lens System Q2237+0305

    We report observations of the four-image gravitational lens system Q2237+0305 with the VLA at 20 cm and 3.6 cm. The quasar was detected at both frequencies (\approx 0.7 mJy) with a flat spectrum. All four lensed images are clearly resolved at 3.6 cm, and the agreement of the radio and optical image positions is excellent. No radio emission is detected from the lensing galaxy, and any fifth lensed quasar image must be fainter than \sim 20% of the A image flux density. Since the optical quasar images are variable and susceptible to extinction, radio flux ratios provide the best measurement of the macrolensing magnification ratios. The radio B/A and C/A image flux ratios are consistent with the observed range of optical variations, but the D/A ratio is consistently higher in the radio than in the optical. The radio ratios are consistent with magnification ratios predicted by lens models, and weaken alternative interpretations for Q2237+0305. More accurate radio ratios can distinguish between the models, as well as improve our understanding of both microlensing and extinction in this system.Comment: 1 postscript file, 13 pages.     The transitional millisecond pulsar IGR J18245-2452 during its 2013 outburst at X-rays and soft gamma-rays

    IGR~J18245--2452/PSR J1824--2452I is one of the rare transitional accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, showing direct evidence of switches between states of rotation powered radio pulsations and accretion powered X-ray pulsations, dubbed transitional pulsars. IGR~J18245--2452 is the only transitional pulsar so far to have shown a full accretion episode, reaching an X-ray luminosity of ∼1037\sim10^{37}~erg~s−1^{-1} permitting its discovery with INTEGRAL in 2013. In this paper, we report on a detailed analysis of the data collected with the IBIS/ISGRI and the two JEM-X monitors on-board INTEGRAL at the time of the 2013 outburst. We make use of some complementary data obtained with the instruments on-board XMM-Newton and Swift in order to perform the averaged broad-band spectral analysis of the source in the energy range 0.4 -- 250~keV. We have found that this spectrum is the hardest among the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars. We improved the ephemeris, now valid across its full outburst, and report the detection of pulsed emission up to ∼60\sim60 keV in both the ISGRI (10.9σ10.9 \sigma) and Fermi/GBM (5.9σ5.9 \sigma) bandpass. The alignment of the ISGRI and Fermi GBM 20 -- 60 keV pulse profiles are consistent at a $\sim25\ \mu$s level. We compared the pulse profiles obtained at soft X-rays with \xmm\ with the soft \gr-ray ones, and derived the pulsed fractions of the fundamental and first harmonic, as well as the time lag of the fundamental harmonic, up to 150 μ150\ \mus, as a function of energy. We report on a thermonuclear X-ray burst detected with \Integ, and using the properties of the previously type-I X-ray burst, we show that all these events are powered primarily by helium ignited at a depth of yign≈2.7×108y_{\rm ign} \approx 2.7\times10^8 g cm−2{}^{-2}. For such a helium burst the estimated recurrence time of Δtrec≈5.6\Delta t_{\rm rec}\approx5.6 d is in agreement with the observations.Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figures, 3 Tables Astronomy and Astrophysics Journal, accepted for publication on the 13th of April 201

    Investment, insurance and weather shocks: Evidence from Cambodia

    The livelihoods of poor people in developing countries are increasingly dependent on weather shocks whose effects are exacerbated by the lack of access to adequate insurance markets allowing risk hedging. Index-based insurance underwrites a weather risk as a proxy for economic loss: when the index falls below a certain level, farmers automatically get a payment. The aim of this paper is to study the impact of an Index-based insurance on investment decisions in profitable but risky inputs in presence of weather shocks by means of an incentivized lab-in-the-field experiment conducted in Cambodia. The protocol is designed so as to study the extent to which investment decisions change under risk or ambiguity, for different levels of initial wealth, under contract nonperformance (i.e., when claims are not repaid by the insurer) and when the insurance is fully subsidized. The findings indicate that, while the mere presence of a market for insurance increases investment, the strength of the effect crucially depends upon the level of initial wealth and upon the subjects' ability to correctly assess the probability of a shock

More precisely, we consider the random variable Y-n representing the number of occurrences of a given symbol in a word of length n generated at random; the stochastic model is defined by a rational formal series r having a linear representation with two primitive components. This model includes the case when r is the product or the sum of two primitive rational formal series. We obtain asymptotic evaluations for the mean value and the variance of Yn and its limit distribution
