Wave envelopes with second-order spatiotemporal dispersion : I. Bright Kerr solitons and cnoidal waves
We propose a simple scalar model for describing pulse phenomena beyond the conventional slowly-varying envelope approximation. The generic governing equation has a cubic nonlinearity and we focus here mainly on contexts involving anomalous group-velocity dispersion. Pulse propagation turns out to be a problem firmly rooted in frames-of-reference considerations. The transformation properties of the new model and its space-time structure are explored in detail. Two distinct representations of exact analytical solitons and their associated conservation laws (in both integral and algebraic forms) are presented, and a range of new predictions is made. We also report cnoidal waves of the governing nonlinear equation. Crucially, conventional pulse theory is shown to emerge as a limit of the more general formulation. Extensive simulations examine the role of the new solitons as robust attractors
The Canadian Neuromuscular Disease Registry 2010-2019: A Decade of Facilitating Clinical Research Througha Nationwide, Pan-NeuromuscularDisease Registry
We report the recruitment activities and outcomes of a multi-disease neuromuscular patient registry in Canada. The Canadian Neuromuscular Disease Registry (CNDR) registers individuals across Canada with a confirmed diagnosis of a neuromuscular disease. Diagnosis and contact information are collected across all diseases and detailed prospective data is collected for 5 specific diseases: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), Myotonic Dystrophy (DM), Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD), and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Since 2010, the CNDR has registered 4306 patients (1154 pediatric and 3148 adult) with 91 different neuromuscular diagnoses and has facilitated 125 projects (73 academic, 3 not-for-profit, 3 government, and 46 commercial) using registry data. In conclusion, the CNDR is an effective and productive pan-neuromuscular registry that has successfully facilitated a substantial number of studies over the past 10 years
Twist Defect in Chiral Photonic Structures
We demonstrate that twisting one part of a chiral photonic structure about
its helical axis produces a single circularly polarized localized mode that
gives rise to an anomalous crossover in propagation. Up to a crossover
thickness, this defect results in a peak in transmission and exponential
scaling of the linewidth for a circularly polarized wave with the same
handedness as structure. Above the crossover, however, the linewidth saturates
and the defect mode can be excited only by the oppositely polarized wave,
resulting in a peak in reflection instead of transmission.Comment: 12 page
Economic liberalization and the antecedents of top management teams: evidence from Turkish 'big' business
There has been an increased interest in the last two decades in top management teams (TMTs) of business firms. Much of the research, however, has been US-based and concerned primarily with TMT effects on organizational outcomes. The present study aims to expand this literature by examining the antecedents of top team composition in the context of macro-level economic change in a late-industrializing country. The post-1980 trade and market reforms in Turkey provided the empirical setting. Drawing upon the literatures on TMT and chief executive characteristics together with punctuated equilibrium models of change and institutional theory, the article develops the argument that which firm-level factors affect which attributes of TMT formations varies across the early and late stages of economic liberalization. Results of the empirical investigation of 71 of the largest industrial firms in Turkey broadly supported the hypotheses derived from this premise. In the early stages of economic liberalization the average age and average organizational tenure of TMTs were related to the export orientation of firms, whereas in later stages, firm performance became a major predictor of these team attributes. Educational background characteristics of teams appeared to be under stronger institutional pressures, altering in different ways in the face of macro-level change
Dark matter searches at LHC
Besides Standard Model measurements and other Beyond Standard Model studies,
the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC will search for Supersymmetry, one of
the most attractive explanation for dark matter. The SUSY discovery potential
with early data is presented here together with some first results obtained
with 2010 collision data at 7 TeV. Emphasis is placed on measurements and
parameter determination that can be performed to disentangle the possible SUSY
models and SUSY look-alike and the interpretation of a possible positive

Homicide in Canada and the crime drop
In contrast to the Canadian crime drop of the 1990s, homicide appeared as an anomaly with a peak in the 1970s. Yet previous studies tend to refer only to completed homicides, and here we also include attempts. The resulting trend is remarkably similar to that in Canadian property crime for five decades. This seems unlikely to be a coincidence and we speculate about a causal link
Higgs decay to dark matter in low energy SUSY: is it detectable at the LHC ?
Due to the limited statistics so far accumulated in the Higgs boson search at
the LHC, the Higgs boson property has not yet been tightly constrained and it
is still allowed for the Higgs boson to decay invisibly to dark matter with a
sizable branching ratio. In this work, we examine the Higgs decay to neutralino
dark matter in low energy SUSY by considering three different models: the
minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the next-to-minimal
supersymmetric standard models (NMSSM) and the nearly minimal supersymmetric
standard model (nMSSM). Under current experimental constraints at 2-sigma level
(including the muon g-2 and the dark matter relic density), we scan over the
parameter space of each model. Then in the allowed parameter space we calculate
the branching ratio of the SM-like Higgs decay to neutralino dark matter and
examine its observability at the LHC by considering three production channels:
the weak boson fusion VV->h, the associated production with a Z-boson pp->hZ+X
or a pair of top quarks pp->htt_bar+X. We find that in the MSSM such a decay is
far below the detectable level; while in both the NMSSM and nMSSM the decay
branching ratio can be large enough to be observable at the LHC.Comment: Version in JHE
Forward-backward Asymmetry and Branching Ratio of B \rar K_1 \ell^+ \ell^- Transition in Supersymmetric Models
The mass eigen states and are mixture of the strange
members of two axial-vector SU(3) octet, and .
Taking into account this mixture, the forward-backward asymmetry and branching
ratio of B \rar K_1(1270,1400) \ell^+ \ell^- transitions are studied in the
framework of different supersymmetric models. It is found that the results have
considerable deviation from the standard model predictions. Any measurement of
these physical observables and their comparison with the results obtained in
this paper can give useful information about the nature of interactions beyond
