The Development of In-Group Favoritism: Between Social Reality and Group Identity

This study examined how social reality restricts children’s tendency for in-group favoritism in group evaluations. Children were faced with social reality considerations and with group identity concerns. Using short stories, in this experimental study, conducted among 3 age groups (6-, 8-, and 10-year-olds), the authors examined the trait attribution effects of reality constraints on eye-color differences and national group differences. The results show that the trait attributions of all age groups were restricted by the acceptance of socially defined reality. In addition, when the information about reality was not considered accurate, only the youngest children showed positive in-group favoritism. It is argued that these findings are useful in trying to reconcile some of the divergent and contrasting findings in the developmental literature on children’s intergroup perceptions and evaluations.

Unemployment Insurance with Response Heterogeneity

The generosity of social insurance coverage often increases with the beneficiary's age and their contribution time to social security, but existing policies vary considerably. We study the differentiation of unemployment insurance (UI) generosity by evaluating how the insurance-incentive trade-off varies with age and contribution time. We exploit numerous discontinuities in potential benefit duration in Germany. Contribution time in the last three years carries information on job search efforts, as it is associated with lower moral hazard responses and fiscal externality. We find no significant response heterogeneity in age or longer contribution time horizons. Contrasting these gradients with an approximated insurance value for four UI regimes, we document that steepening the potential benefit duration schedule in contribution time and flattening it in age would have increased welfare

L’article interroge l’intérêt des sources visuelles pour écrire l’histoire de la mixité dans les formations professionnelles. À partir de l’analyse approfondie des illustrations d’une brochure d’orientation présentant l’école nationale de photographie dans les années soixante, il montre non seulement que celles-ci documentent le quotidien scolaire, mais également qu’elles révèlent la façon dont la direction de l’école construit la figure du photographe professionnel sur des critères de genre. Cette politique visuelle, qui révèle des résistances à la mixité dans des écoles techniques, est susceptible de freiner l’identification des filles à ce métier.This article discusses how the use of visual materials as a source offers new perspectives on writing the history of coeducation in vocational trainings. It is based on the deep analysis of illustrations of an orientation brochure presenting the national school of photography in the sixties. These pictures were meant to document everyday school life, but the study shows that the editing done by the school’s board of directors constructs the image of the professional photographer on gender-based criteria, which highlights their resistance towards coeducation in technical schools. Les allocutions d’investiture des présidents en tant que genre du discours politique russe et français

Le présent article est consacré à l’étude actuelle des genres oraux du discours politique, qui peuvent être divisés en deux grands groupes : monologiques et dialogiques (Parshina 2007). Parmi les genres monologiques, les chercheurs sont particulièrement attirés par le type de l’allocution d’investiture des chefs d’Etat. Il s’agit d’un genre spécifique de discours politique oral, caractérisé par le fait qu’il s’adresse à un auditoire collectif – tous les citoyens du pays, une localisation temporelle et spatiale stricte (le discours n’est prononcé que lors d’une cérémonie solennelle d’inauguration du président). Dans cet article nous avons effectué une analyse comparative des allocutions d’investiture des anciens présidents de Russie et de France – Dmitrij Medvedev et Nicolas Sarkozy – du point de vue de la réalisation des fonctions typiques pour ce genre d’éloquence politique, à savoir : intégrative, inspirative, déclarative et performative, exprimées à travers un certain nombre de topoï et de tactiques discursives.This article is devoted to the actual study of oral genres of political discourse, which are conditionally divided into two groups : monological (program speech, welcome speech, etc.) and dialogical (TV debates, interviews, etc.). Among the monological genres, the inaugural speech of the head of state attracts a special attention of researchers because of the high level of its rituality and symbolic importance. A comparative analysis of the inaugural speeches of the former presidents of Russia and France – Dmitry Medvedev and Nicolas Sarkozy – has been fulfilled in the present article. Precisely, we have studied the characteristic functions of this type of political eloquence, namely: integrative (the consolidation of the nation in a historically significant moment), inspirational (the inspiration of the people for the upcoming great deeds and the glorification of traditional values), declarative (the proclamation by the new president of the principles of his rule) and performative (demonstration of readiness to act as the leader of a great country). Genetic variability in the compatibility between Schistosoma haematobium and its potential vectors in Niger : epidemiological implications

Une étude de la compatibilité de #Schistosoma haematobium envers ses vecteurs potentiels #Bulinus a été menée au Niger dans trois systèmes épidémiologiques : zones irriguées, mares temporaires, mares permanentes type guelta saharienne. Il a été montré que #Bulinus truncatus et #Bulinus senegalensis avec 71,5 % et 85,9 % de taux de réussite à l'infestation sont de bons hôtes intermédiaires alors que #Bulinus globosus et #Bulinus forskalii sont totalement incompatibles. Les combinaisons #S. haematobium - #B. truncatus sympatriques ou allopatriques donnent des résultats semblables. Ceci laisse supposer le manque d'isolement des populations de schistosomes et le grand brassage du génome du parasite par suite de la grande mobilité des populations humaines sahélienne
