Steinert's syndrome presenting as anal incontinence: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Myotonic dystrophy (MD) or Steinert's syndrome is a rare cause of chronic diarrhea and anal incontinence. In the presence of chronic diarrhea and fecal incontinence with muscle weakness, neuromuscular disorders such as myotonic dystrophy should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Case Presentation

We present the case of a 45-year-old Turkish man with Steinert's syndrome, who was not diagnosed until the age of 45.

Conclusions

In clinical practice, the persistence of diarrhea and fecal incontinence with muscle weakness should suggest that the physician perform an anal manometric study and electromyography. Neuromuscular disorders such as myotonic dystrophy should be considered in the differential diagnosis.</p
Editorial of Special Issue of National Identities: Alevism as an ethno-religious identity: Contested boundaries
No abstract for editorial but this is the opening paragraph:
This special issue on Alevism and trans/national Alevi identity critically engages with the relationship between religion, ethnicity and national identity. The core issues are as follows:
• how ethnicity and religion are conceptualised for a relatively invisible ethnic group in different national contexts;
• how religion and ethnicity intersect when Alevism is both a faith and an ethnic identity, especially when conceptions of that identity are contested;
• how identity is shaped through state policies within different national policy contexts and how etic definitions of minority communities are constructed by the state or other agencies with the power to impose them on the community in contrast to the emic or self-definitions of Aleviness from within the Alevi community;
• how despite the fragmented, heterogeneous nature of Alevi communities, there is also a sense of a single, transnational imaginary community, at least for the purposes of political assimilation/integration and activism;
• how education and other arenas of political, religious and cultural engagement at local, national and transnational levels create the possibilities, both positively and negatively, for future action/policy to situate minority ethnic communities
Ontology Based Anomaly Detection for File Integration
13th International Conference on Metadata and Semantic Research, MTSR 2019 -- 28 October 2019 through 31 October 2019 -- -- 235199File integration systems enable file transfers between different systems in order to automate routine business processes. Therefore, the standardization in data exchange between different organizations or decentralized subsidiaries of an organization is achieved. However, abnormal situations may occur during the file integration process. In order to protect the persistence of integration channels, the abnormal files must be detected. For this purpose, anomaly detection is used to trace integrations continuously and to detect abnormal files instantly. In this study, an ontology based anomaly detection approach is proposed in order to detect abnormal situations in real time file integration systems. Thus, a file integration that is achieved on an electronic system will be traced and information will be given to the system administrator if any abnormalities occur during the integration process. Therefore, an abnormal situation that can stop the current file flow on file integration systems will be detected. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG
An anomaly detection system proposal to ensure information security for file integrations [Dosya Entegrasyonlarinda Bilgi Güvenliginin Saglanmasi için Bir Anomali Tespit Sistem Önerisi]
Aselsan;et al.;Huawei;IEEE Signal Processing Society;IEEE Turkey Section;Netas26th IEEE Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference, SIU 2018 -- 2 May 2018 through 5 May 2018 -- 137780Anomaly detection has an important place in the field of information security with the reason for providing defense against new threats. Additionally, anomaly detection can help organizations to make plan for the unexpected situations. For this reason, it is important to take into account that abnormalities in information systems can occur at any time and there must be an emergency management to perceive the anomalies. Anomaly detection systems must not only find previously known anomalies, but also new unknown anomalies. The most effective solution to detect anomalies is self-learning based approaches. In this study, an anomaly detection system is proposed to be developed for file integration systems. The proposed system aims to provide a solution to information security problems that can be encountered in file integration systems. © 2018 IEEE
Application of zero-valent iron nanoparticles for the removal of aqueous Co2+ ions under various experimental conditions
Nanosized zero-valent iron (nZVI) is increasingly gaining interest as an efficient sorbent for various types of aqueous pollutants. In this study,
nZVI was synthesised by the borohydride reduction method, characterised and then examined for the removal of aqueous Co2+ ions over a wide
range of concentrations, from 1 to 1000 mg/L. The size of nZVI particles was predominantly within the range of 20–80 nm, and only limited
oxidation was observed in samples aged for a period of 2 months. The experiments investigated the effects of V/m ratio, concentration, contact time,
repetitive loading, pH and aging on the extent of retardation of Co2+ ions. Iron nanoparticles demonstrated very rapid uptake and large capacity
for the removal of Co2+ ions. Effective uptake was observed even after a number of repetitive trials. The extent of Co2+ uptake increased with the
increasing pH. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate that the fixation of Co2+ ions takes place through the interaction of these ions with
the oxohydroxyl groups on the iron nanoparticle surfaces in addition to spontaneous precipitate formation at high loadings.

Utility of DN4 questionnaire in assessment of neuropathic pain and its clinical correlations in Turkish patients with diabetes mellitus
Aim: We aimed to assess the utility of DN4 questionnaire (Douleur Neuropathique en 4 questions) to define the frequency and severity of neuropathic pain (NP) and also its clinical correlation to daily clinical practice
