In this paper, an exact analytical solution of the radial heat conduction problem in a hollow multilayered sphere is presented. The boundary conditions of the third kind and perfect contact at the interfaces are assumed. The temperatures are obtained by using the Green’s function method. The Green’s functions are expressed in the form of the series of appropriate eigenfunctions

Abstract. In this paper the Laplace transformation for solving the problem of fractional heat conduction in a two-layered slab has been applied. The different orders of Caputo derivative in the time-fractional equation governed the heat transfer in the layers are assumed. The inverse Laplace transform by using a numerical method is determined. The numerical results obtained by using of the eigenfunctions method and by numerically inverting the Laplace transform are compared

Reduced Na+ and higher K+ channel expression and function contribute to right ventricular origin of arrhythmias in Scn5a+/− mice

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is associated with ventricular tachycardia originating particularly in the right ventricle (RV). We explore electrophysiological features predisposing to such arrhythmic tendency and their possible RV localization in a heterozygotic Scn5a+/− murine model. Nav1.5 mRNA and protein expression were lower in Scn5a+/− than wild-type (WT), with a further reduction in the RV compared with the left ventricle (LV). RVs showed higher expression levels of Kv4.2, Kv4.3 and KChIP2 in both Scn5a+/− and WT. Action potential upstroke velocity and maximum Na+ current (INa) density were correspondingly decreased in Scn5a+/−, with a further reduction in the RV. The voltage dependence of inactivation was shifted to more negative values in Scn5a+/−. These findings are predictive of a localized depolarization abnormality leading to slowed conduction. Persistent Na+ current (IpNa) density was decreased in a similar pattern to INa. RV transient outward current (Ito) density was greater than LV in both WT and Scn5a+/−, and had larger time constants of inactivation. These findings were also consistent with the observation that AP durations were smallest in the RV of Scn5a+/−, fulfilling predictions of an increased heterogeneity of repolarization as an additional possible electrophysiological mechanism for arrhythmogenesis in BrS

Role and possible mechanisms of clenbuterol in enhancing reverse remodelling during mechanical unloading in murine heart failure

Aims Combined left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and pharmacological therapy has been proposed to favour myocardial recovery in patients with end-stage heart failure (HF). Clenbuterol (Clen), a b 2 -adrenoceptor (b 2 -AR) agonist, has been used as a part of this strategy. In this study, we investigated the direct effects of clenbuterol on unloaded myocardium in HF. Methods and results Left coronary artery ligation or sham operation was performed in male Lewis rats. After 4-6 weeks, heterotopic abdominal transplantation of the failing hearts into normal recipients was performed to induce LV unloading (UN). Recipient rats were treated with saline (Sal) or clenbuterol (2 mg/kg/day) via osmotic minipumps (HF ĂŸ UN ĂŸ Sal or HF ĂŸ UN ĂŸ Clen) for 7 days. Non-transplanted HF animals were treated with Sal (Sham ĂŸ Sal, HF ĂŸ Sal) or clenbuterol (HF ĂŸ Clen). LV myocytes were isolated and studied using optical, fluorescence, and electrophysiological techniques. Conclusion Clenbuterol treatment of failing rat hearts, alone or in combination with mechanical unloading, improves LV function at the whole-heart and cellular levels by affecting cell morphology, excitation-contraction coupling, and myofilament sensitivity to calcium. This study supports the use of this drug in the strategy to enhance recovery in HF patients treated with LVADs and also begins to elucidate some of the possible cellular mechanisms responsible for the improvement in LV function

Rays, intrusive growth, and storied cambium in the inflorescence stems of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh

Arabidopsis thaliana is a model plant used in analysis of different aspects of plant growth and development. Under suitable conditions, secondary growth takes place in the hypocotyl of Arabidopsis plants, a finding which helps in understanding many aspects of xylogenesis. However, not all developmental processes of secondary tissue can be studied here, as no secondary rays and intrusive growth have been detected in hypocotyl. However, results presented here concerning the secondary growth in inflorescence stems of Arabidopsis shows that both secondary rays and intrusive growth of cambial cells can be detected, and that, in the interfascicular regions, a storied cambium can be developed

Heat conduction in a finite medium using the fractional single-phase-lag model

In the paper, a solution of the time-fractional single-phase-lagging heat conduction problem in finite regions is presented. The heat conduction equation with the Caputo time-derivative is complemented by the Robin boundary conditions. The Laplace transform with respect to the time variable and an expansion in the eigenfunctions series with respect to the space variable was applied. A method for the numerical inversion of the Laplace transforms was used. Formulation and solution of the problem cover the heat conduction in a finite slab, hollow cylinder and hollow sphere. The effect of the fractional order of the Caputo derivative and the phase-lag parameter on the temperature distribution in a slab has been numerically investigated
