The NuSTAR view of the Seyfert Galaxy HE 0436-4717
We present the multi epoch spectral analysis of HE 0436-4717, a bright
Seyfert 1 galaxy serendipitously observed by the high energy satellite NuSTAR
four times between December 2014 and December 2015. The source flux shows
modest variability within each pointing and among the four observations.
Spectra are well modelled in terms of a weakly variable primary power law with
constant photon index (=2.010.08). A constant narrow \ion{Fe}
K emission line suggests that this feature has an origin far from the
central black hole, while a broad relativistic component is not required by the
data. The Compton reflection component is also constant in flux with a
corresponding reflection fraction R=0.7. The iron abundance is
compatible with being Solar (A=1.2), and a lower limit
for the high energy cut-off E>280 keV is obtained. Adopting a
self-consistent model accounting for a primary Comptonized continuum, we obtain
a lower limit for the hot corona electron temperature kT>65 keV and a
corresponding upper limit for the coronal optical depth of <1.3. The
results of the present analysis are consistent with the locus of local Seyfert
galaxies in the kT- and temperature-compactness diagrams.Comment: accepted for publication in A&
From scan-to-BIM to a structural finite elements model of built heritage for dynamic simulation
The progress in information technology allows an innovative transformation of practices commonly involved in the engineering and construction field, especially in relation to the existing architectural heritage’s control and management activities. The proposed methodology takes advantage of an integrated 3D metric survey as a basis for an HBIM (Historic Building Information Modelling) model to be exploited for the definition of a Finite Elements Model (FEM). This paper aims to show the applicability of a digital process, stemmed from the integration in Rhinoceros 3D of a BIM structural model, leading to the dynamic simulation of the analytical FEM through PRO_SAP® (a PROfessional Structural Analysis Program). The described workflow investigates the interoperability issues, along with the difficulties in the Scan-to-HBIM processes, demonstrating how HBIM
models can anyhow support operations aimed at maintaining and preserving existing historical assets, also from a structural point of view, even if with still persistent criticalities

Éstas están implícitas tanto en los programas de investigación en educación matemática como en la práctica docente de esta área del saber. En este trabajo se hace un breve análisis de los discursos filosóficos más prominentes y su relación con algunos de los principales programas de investigación en educación matemática. Finalmente, se reflexiona acerca de cómo impactan dichos discursos en las perspectivas psicopedagógicas que se siguen en la enseñanza de las matemáticas
Isotope Exchange in Disulfur Monoxide-Water Charged Complexes: A Mass Spectrometric and Computational Study
A hitherto unknown, isotope-exchange reaction is studied in ionized gaseous mixtures containing disulfur monoxide and water. The kinetics, mechanism, and intermediate of the reaction are investigated by experimental and theoretical methods. The reactivity of the S2O˙+ cation with water is investigated under a wide range of pressures ranging from 10−7 to 10−4 Torr, by FT-ICR, TQ, and high-resolution CAD mass spectrometry. In the high-pressure limit the reaction proves to be a route to strongly bound sulfur-containing species
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Studies in Alzheimer's Disease
Although motor deficits affect patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) only at later stages, recent studies demonstrated that primary motor cortex is precociously affected by neuronal degeneration. It is conceivable that neuronal loss is compensated by reorganization of the neural circuitries, thereby maintaining motor performances in daily living. Effectively several transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies have demonstrated that cortical excitability is enhanced in AD and primary motor cortex presents functional reorganization. Although the best hypothesis for the pathogenesis of AD remains the degeneration of cholinergic neurons in specific regions of the basal forebrain, the application of specific TMS protocols pointed out a role of other neurotransmitters. The present paper provides a perspective of the TMS techniques used to study neurophysiological aspects of AD showing also that, based on different patterns of cortical excitability, TMS may be useful in discriminating between physiological and pathological brain aging at least at the group level. Moreover repetitive TMS might become useful in the rehabilitation of AD patients. Finally integrated approaches utilizing TMS together with others neuro-physiological techniques, such as high-density EEG, and structural and functional imaging as well as biological markers are proposed as promising tool for large-scale, low-cost, and noninvasive evaluation of at-risk populations
Efficacy of 1998 <i>vs</i> 2006 first-line antiretroviral regimens for HIV infection: an ordinary clinics retrospective investigation
Purpose: The evidence suggesting increased HAART efficacy over time comes from randomized trials or cohort
studies. This retrospective multicenter survey aimed to assess the variation over time in the efficacy and tolerability of first-line HAART regimens in unselected patients treated in ordinary clinical settings.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of data of all patients starting first-line HAART regimens in 1998 and 2006 at adhering centers in the Italian CISAI group.
Results: For the 543 patients included, mean age was 39.1 ± 9.8y in 1998 and 41.0 ± 10.7y in 2006 (p=0.03),
with a similar proportion of males. Baseline mean log10 HIV-RNA was 4.56 ± 0.97 copies/mL in 1998 vs 4.91 ± 0.96
copies/mL in 2006 (p<0.001); baseline mean CD4 T-cell counts were 343 ± 314/mm3 in 1998 vs 244 ± 174/mm3 in
2006 (p<0.001). The following outcomes were significantly improved at 48w in 2006: proportion with undetectable HIV-RNA (86.3% vs 58.0%; p<0.001); mean increase in CD4 T-cells count (252 ± 225 vs 173 ± 246; p<0.001); HAART modification (20.1% vs 29.2%; p=0.02); HAART interruption (7.3% vs 14.6%; p=0.01); proportion reporting optimal adherence (92.2% vs 82.7%, p=0.03). No differences were observed in the prevalence of grade 3-4 WHO toxicities (26.4% vs 26.6%; p=0.9). Multivariate logistic regression showed that being treated in 1998 remained an independent predictor of virological failure after several adjustments, including adherence.
Conclusions: Our data from patients not included in clinical trials or cohort studies provide an additional
line of evidence that the effectiveness of HAART significantly improved in 2006. Treated patients, however, were significantly older and more frequently late HIV presenters in 2006 than in 1998.</br

Impact of social determinants on antiretroviral therapy access and outcomes entering the era of universal treatment for people living with HIV in Italy
Background: Social determinants are known to be a driving force of health inequalities, even in high income countries. Aim of our study was to determine if these factors can limit antiretroviral therapy (ART) access, outcome and retention in care of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Italy. Methods: All ART naïve HIV+ patients (pts) of Italian nationality enrolled in the ICONA Cohort from 2002 to 2016 were included. The association of socio-demographic characteristics (age, sex, risk factor for HIV infection, educational level, occupational status and residency area) with time to: ART initiation (from the first positive anti-HIV test), ART regimen discontinuation, and first HIV-RNA < 50 cp/mL, were evaluated by Cox regression analysis, Kaplan Meier method and log-rank test. Results: A total of 8023 HIV+ pts (82% males, median age at first pos anti-HIV test 36 years, IQR: 29-44) were included: 6214 (77.5%) started ART during the study period. Women, people who inject drugs (PWID) and residents in Southern Italy presented the lowest levels of education and the highest rate of unemployment compared to other groups. Females, pts aged > 50 yrs., unemployed vs employed, and people with lower educational levels presented the lowest CD4 count at ART initiation compared to other groups. The overall median time to ART initiation was 0.6 years (yrs) (IQR 0.1-3.7), with a significant decrease over time [2002-2006 = 3.3 yrs. (0.2-9.4); 2007-2011 = 1.0 yrs. (0.1-3.9); 2012-2016 = 0.2 yrs. (0.1-2.1), p < 0.001]. By multivariate analysis, females (p < 0.01) and PWID (p < 0.001), presented a longer time to ART initiation, while older people (p < 0.001), people with higher educational levels (p < 0.001), unemployed (p = 0.02) and students (p < 0.001) were more likely to initiate ART. Moreover, PWID, unemployed vs stable employed, and pts. with lower educational levels showed a lower 1-year probability of achieving HIV-RNA suppression, while females, older patients, men who have sex with men (MSM), unemployed had higher 1-year risk of first-line ART discontinuation. Conclusions: Despite median time to ART start decreased from 2002 to 2016, socio-demographic factors still contribute to disparities in ART initiation, outcome and durability
First detection of X-ray polarization from the accreting neutron star 4U 1820-303
This paper reports the first detection of polarization in the X-rays for
atoll-source 4U 1820-303, obtained with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer
(IXPE) at 99.999% confidence level (CL). Simultaneous polarimetric measurements
were also performed in the radio with the Australia Telescope Compact Array
(ATCA). The IXPE observations of 4U 1820-303 were coordinated with Swift-XRT,
NICER, and NuSTAR aiming to obtain an accurate X-ray spectral model covering a
broad energy interval. The source shows a significant polarization above 4 keV,
with a polarization degree of 2.0(0.5)% and a polarization angle of -55(7) deg
in the 4-7 keV energy range, and a polarization degree of 10(2)% and a
polarization angle of -67(7) deg in the 7-8 keV energy bin. This polarization
also shows a clear energy trend with polarization degree increasing with energy
and a hint for a position-angle change of about 90 deg at 96% CL around 4 keV.
The spectro-polarimetric fit indicates that the accretion disk is polarized
orthogonally to the hard spectral component, which is presumably produced in
the boundary/spreading layer. We do not detect linear polarization from the
radio counterpart, with a 99.97% upper limit of 50% at 7.25 GHz
X-Ray Polarimetry of the Dipping Accreting Neutron Star 4U 1624-49
We present the first X-ray polarimetric study of the dipping accreting
neutron star 4U 162449 with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE).
We report a detection of polarization in the non-dip time intervals with a
confidence level of 99.99%. We find an average polarization degree (PD) of
% and a polarization angle of degrees east of north in the
2-8 keV band. We report an upper limit on the PD of 22% during the X-ray dips
with 95% confidence. The PD increases with energy, reaching from %
in the 4-6 keV band to % in the 6-8 keV band. This indicates the
polarization likely arises from Comptonization. The high PD observed is
unlikely to be produced by Comptonization in the boundary layer or spreading
layer alone. It can be produced by the addition of an extended geometrically
thin slab corona covering part of the accretion disk, as assumed in previous
models of dippers, and/or a reflection component from the accretion disk
