STUDENTS’ VIEWS ON THE USE OF PEER ASSESSMENT TO INCREASE STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION IN THE CLASSROOM (A CASE STUDY ON ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION CLASS THROUGH LESSON STUDY)
Increasing students’ participation in the learning process is an obvious goal in lectures. If only a few students participate by asking questions, answering, involving in discussion, so lecturers have to create the condition that enable students to participate actively to reach the learning goal. This research describes how students view on the use of peer assessment to increase students’ participation in the classroom. The sample of this research was the fifth semester students of Palopo Cokroaminoto University which consists of 30 students. This research uses descriptive research. It was done on assessment and evaluation class for four meetings through Lesson Study and the data was gathered thought observers’ and researcher’s observation and questionnaires. This research was carried out by asking the students to discuss the given material and giving oral presentation in group. After having discussion and presentation, students were asked to assess their group mates. After observing the class and administering the questionnaires, it was found that peer assessment is a good way to assess students’ participation. Students perceive that peer assessment can make them involved more in the teaching and learning process. The students were active in oral presentation, asking and answering question, performing well on the task, giving more comment on the discussion, and it helped the students to improve their skill that will be used in their future. Some students also suggested the lecturers to use peer assessment in their teaching process, however e few students view it negatively since it is hard for them to concentrate on two activities in the same time (assessing the peer and participating on the lecture) and the use of peer assessment hindered their friendship due to their objective assessment on their peer’s lack during the discussion
Code Switching Types Used by the English Teacher in English Classroom at SMA 1 Malili
This research aimed at finding out: (1) the types of code switching used by the English teacher (2) the dominant types of code switching used by the teacher and (3) the teacher’s perceptions toward the use of teachers’ code switching in English classroom at SMA I Malili. This research took one of the English teachers as the subject of the research and the data were gathered through observation, interview, and recorded by using video recorder and field notes. The data were then analyzed using discourse analysis. The result of analysis showed that (1) the teacher used three types of code switching, namely: intrasentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and tag switching; (2) the dominant types of code switching used was intrasentential code switching followed by inter sentential code switching and tag switching (3) the interviewed teacher responded positively toward the use of code switching by the English teacher in English classroom
Pelatihan dan Pengenalan Dasar-Dasar Komputer bagi Siswa Sekolah Dasar di Lingkungan Kelurahan Temmalebba
Masa Pandemi covid-19 memaksa pembelajaran dilakukan secara daring sehingga hal tersebut mengharuskan anak-anak untuk mengetahui bagaimana menggunakan teknologi dengan benar termasuk penggunan komputer. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 09 Februari 2021 sampai dengan 15 Maret 2021 dengan tema pengabdian “Pelatihan Pengenalan Dasar-Dasar Komputer pada masa pandemi Covid-19 bagi siswa SD di desa Marannu”. Tujuan diadakannya kegiatan ini yaitu agar anak-anak SD di Desa Marannu mampu menguasai ilmu pengetahuan komputer seperti Microsoft Office diantaranya Microsoft Word dan Powerpoint, serta cara mengakses informasi dari internet. Metode pelaksanaan pengabdian ini adalah persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Dalam kegiatan ini tim pengabdian berhasil menjalankan pelatihan dasar komputer. Hal ini terlihat dari antusias anak-anak dalam mengikuti kegiatan. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah siswa-siswi sekolah dasar di Kelurahan Temmalebba mengenal dan mampu menggunakan teknologi yang telah mereka dapatkan melalui pelatihan
Students’ Learning Styles in Higher Education
This research aims to find the dominant students’ learning style and their opinion about online class. It is descriptive study. 42 students were taken as sample by purposive sampling technique for they have online class during COVID-19. This result show that the most dominant learning style is visual learning style (78.4%). And they mostly have negative opinion about online class. (75.6%) of the students do not like it and (78.04%) are not motivated on online class. The most dominant reason is that it is hard to understand the instruction and material. Besides that, they feel that online classroom does not accord to their learning styles (85.36%). Somehow, 95.12% of the students were active on online class and 21.9% are motivated for students feel free/not ashamed in online class than in real class. So most of the students are visual learner and most of them have negative perspective toward online class
Correlation Between Students’ Learning Habit in Listening English Song and Their Pronunciation Capacity
This research aimed at finding whether or not students’ habit of listening to English songs (X variable) and their pronunciation ability(Y variable) have correlation. It was conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Palopo. The sample taken was 30 students in academic year 2020/2021. The method used in this research was quantitative method with the correlational design. The instruments used to gather the data were questionnaire and pronunciation test. The scores from both instruments were calculated and analyzed by using SPSS to see whether there was a correlation between the two variables or not. The result showed that there was a correlation, with the index value of correlation coefficient (rxy) of 0.442 which meant there was a moderate correlation. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed that the index value of correlation coefficient (rxy) of 0,442 was higher than the index value of correlation coefficient of the Product Moment table (rt) of 0,306 which meant that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. In conclusion, there was a moderate significance correlation between the two variables. Based on the findings mentioned above, the researcher assumes that the more students listening to English song the more their listening ability will be better. It means listening to English song can be used as media to improve students’ listening ability. Therefore, the researchers suggest that the English teacher could use movie as a media in language teaching in improving students’ listening skill.
 
Pendampingan English for Specific Purposes (ESP) bagi Siswa SMKN 4 Luwu
Kegiatan PKM English for Specific Purposes (ESP) diadakan sebagai upaya meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan ESP siswa di SMK Pertanian Luwu yang terletak di Desa Barammase, Kecamatan Walenrang, Kabupaten Luwu. SMK ini terdiri dari berbagai jurusan, salah satunya adalah jurusan pertanian. Permasalahan yang dihadapi mitra PKM ini adalah: 1) Pengetahuan dan kemampuan ESP siswa SMK Negeri 4 Luwu khususnya yang berkaitan dengan bahasa Inggris pertanian masih sangat rendah karena tidak adanya pembelajaran ESP pertanian di sekolah mitra dan 2) Belum adanya wadah yang dapat memfasilitasi siswa untuk memperdalam dan mempraktekkan ESP terkait bahasa Inggris Pertanian di baik sekolah mitra ataupun di luar sekolah. Solusi yang diberikan untuk mengatasi permasalahan di atas adalah 1) Memberikan pengenalan tentang ESP Pertanian dalam bentuk pendampingan belajar bagi siswa di sekolah mitra untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan siswa tentang ESP pertanian. 2) Pembentukan ESP Club sebagai wadah bagi siswa untuk mempraktekkan dan memperdalam pemahaman serta keterampilan mitra tentang ESP Pertanian. Kegiatan pengabdian ini diadakan selama 3 (tiga) bulan yang meliputi tahap 1) Persiapan, 2) Pelaksanaan Kegiatan, Pelaksanaan program ini melibatkan dua orang dosen UNCP, 4 orang mahasiswa, dan sekolah mitra (SMKN 4 Luwu), 3) Evaluasi, dilakukan melalui pemberian pre-test dan post-test dan on going evaluation, dan 4) Keberlanjutan Program dengan pembentukan ESP Club. Hasil luaran yang diperoleh dari pelaksanaan PKM Pendampingan English for Specific Purposes (ESP) bagi siswa SMK Negeri 4 Luwu in terdiri dari dua luaran yaitu luaran wajib dan luaran tambahan. Adapun luaran wajib adalah 1) publikasi pada jurnal ilmiah berISSN dan HKI artikel, sementara luaran tambahan adalah 1) Meningkatnya kemampuan kosakata bahasa Inggris dasar siswa terkait ESP Pertanian, 2) terbentuknya ESP Clup bagi siswa SMK Negeri 4 Luwu
SELF ASSESSMENT IN THE TEACHING OF ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING
This study investigated the effect of using self-assessment on Students’ argumentative writing. The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not the use of self-assessment as was effective in developing students’ English writing performance, argumentative writing processes specifically. The participants of this study consisted of 26 students chosen by using cluster random sampling. The results obtained from pretest shows that students’ writing performance was poor. However, the results obtained from the post test showed improvement in English writing performance using self assessment technique. It is proven by the data of pre and posttest, where the mean score of the pretest is 48 and the posttest is 75. The p-Value (0.00) was lower than α (0.05). It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It means that self assessment can significantly improve the students’ argumentative writing.
