This study discusses the overall effectiveness of a Points Based Behavioral Management Model in an alternative setting. This model was studied over a semester. It proved to be effective in reducing out of school suspensions. The model allowed the staff to help the students begin to monitor their own behavior

Brief description of six oil paintings

The basic theme for my semester's painting project has remained the same for all six paintings. I set out to create a compositional order in each that was to be preserved within the picture plane whether in very simple or in highly complex form. By using internal order for my central theme, I was merely segregating an element that must be present in any creative product for it to function as "art". While this sense of order always guided my efforts, it was also used as a framework within which the separate elements of color, form, and the by-product texture could be manipulated

Home economics for girls in the Hew Bern High School of New Bern, N.C., has long been recognised as a subject of major importance. Until a few years ago boys had shown no desire to take part in the courses offered to the girls, but in recent years considerable demand has come from the boys for certain aspects of home economics training. These boys have desired a course for boys rather than a part of the present course for girls. It was found that the superintendent of schools was very reluctant to consider such a course. The principal of the high school, several members of the school hoard, and a few mothers and fathers questioned the need of such a course la home economics for boys

Positive freedom: an exploration of pedagogical citizenship

    Get PDF
The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the pedagogical attempt to teach for citizenship in the public school setting. Using the tools of critical/ liberatory pedagogy the critical scholar embarked on a discovery of the foundations of his pedagogical practice, by exploring his subject stance while teaching with a democratic mindset. This dissertation proposes that there is a crisis of democratic citizenship in this country. The crisis is due to forces of oppression and is exacerbated by the lack of democratic practice in schools and society. By uncovering the techniques inherent in critical pedagogy and the free school movement the dissertation seeks to place the subject/ researcher within the mental context of liberation while engaged in a systematic autobiographical record of his teaching practices. From this autobiographic stance the researcher will reflect upon his own teaching and understandings as they are presented. The findings indicate that liberatory/ critical pedagogy is a difficult practice and creates tensions within the authoritarian bodies that control schooling. The research also suggests that democracy is only an abstract concept in schooling and cannot be practiced in traditional public school settings. The original premise of the research, that there is a "crisis of democratic citizenship" and part of that crisis is due to the lack of practice in schools, is advanced by this dissertation

    Self portrait drawings

The self portraits that comprise this thesis exhibition are all drawn by direct observation with mirror, pencil or pen, and paper. The problems of the self portrait as a genre extend beyond those of a normal portrait. The artist is literally and figuratively more familiar with his own physical attributes than those of any other person, and he is more likely to know his own emotional nature, his "gestalt," than he could assume of others. Yet it remains difficult to be objective and direct in interpreting one's own countenance and attitudes. I have attempted to be honest and render an uncalculated impression of my own image. However, it seems inevitable that the viewer will draw conclusions about content in the drawings which I have not consciously intended to present. I have purposefully chosen not to direct the image to a preconceived end but to let the drawings establish themselves through observation and action. This exhibition of drawings marks an intentional redirection in my art. The innately private and insular characteristics of self portraits reflect the resolve I have adopted for an art which does not consider the public forum a required element of creativity. The choice for self portraits symbolizes my awareness that my art must be principally for myself. The act of observing myself as drawing subject has sensitized me to a consideration of myself, beyond appearance, that I had not done before. If an artist's role is essentially a subjective interpretation of his view of the world, then a self portrait can be seen as a turning the eye "lens" back upon itself

An investigation of the relationships among leadership styles, occupational stress, and type A behavior of principals

Principals experience many pressures as they perform their daily duties. They are involved with teachers, parents, students, and members of the community. They must motivate, discipline, counsel, and direct activities. Their leadership styles, behavioral characteristics, and abilities to deal with stress are important in their roles as administrative and instructional leaders of the school. This study investigated the relationships among leadership styles and effectiveness, degree of occupational stress, and Type A behavioral characteristics of principals. The Leader Effectiveness and Adaptability Description-Self, the Administrative Stress Index, and the Behavior Activity Profile were mailed to 56 Middle, Junior, and High school principals in Western North Carolina. Surveys from 51 principals (91%) were returned. The Spearman rho and the Pearson r correlation procedures were used to determine the degree of relationship among variables in the study. Six null hypotheses were proposed. Statistical analyses of the hypotheses were obtained by using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences-X

yesPlagiarism is a vexed issue for Higher Education, affecting student transition, retention and attainment. This paper reports on two initiatives from the University of Bradford library aimed at reducing student plagiarism. The first initiative is an intensive course for students who have contravened plagiarism regulations. The second course introduces new students to the concepts surrounding plagiarism with the aim to prevent plagiarism breaches. Since the Plagiarism Avoidance for New Students course was introduced there has been a significant drop in students referred to the disciplinary programme. This paper discusses the background to both courses and the challenges of implementation

Limited Liability Companies in Kentucky, Second Edition

    Get PDF
The Kentucky Limited Liability Company Act, KRS Chapter 275, went into effect July 15, 1994, allowing Kentuckians to conduct business under the LLC form. With over 10,000 LLCs formed in the Commonwealth since the Act\u27s inception, this flexible business entity has become the most popular way to conduct business in Kentucky. The LLC has become so pervasive that business law practitioners, accountants, tax advisors and estate planners must all be well-versed in the myriad of issues and creative applications that accompany this business entity. With flexible tax-treatment and the liability protection of a traditional corporation this entity is utilized not only for business formation and practice but also for business succession and estate planning, the structuring of joint ventures and strategic alliances, as venture capital vehicles, and as tax planning tools. The goal of this monograph is to provide the practitioner with a concise and comprehensive approach to the tools necessary for lawyers to counsel and advise clients on this complex and efficient business entity form. Succinct chapters take the reader through an overview of the LLC entity and the Kentucky LLC Act; choice of entity considerations (both tax and non-tax); the formation, operation and statutory transaction issues which arise for the entity; as well as the new single-member LLC; the professional LLC; the use of the LLC in tax-exempt organizations; wealth transfer planning with LLCs; and securities law, commercial law and benefit issues arising under the LLC entity. Each chapter is set forth in separately numbered paragraphs, present running headers for easy access, and are cross-referenced to other relevant chapters and paragraphs contained in the monograph. Summary and comparative charts, a table of authorities and a statutory appendix are also presented. Finally, a comprehensive index has been created to aid the user in finding relevant subject treatments
