COMMIPHORA MUKUL EXTRACT AND GUGGULSTERONE EXHIBIT ANTITUMOUR ACTIVITY THROUGH INHIBITION OF CYCLIN D1, NF-Κß AND INDUCTION OF APOPTOSIS IN ORAL CANCER CELLS
ABSTRACTComiphora mukul, a promising medicinal plant and its constituent Guggulsterone (GS) is used in Ayurveda since decades. This study was aimed toinvestigate the anticancer potential of C. mukul and GS on oral cancer cell lines (SCC-4, KB). MTT assay was used to determine tumour cell proliferation, propidium iodide labeling and annexin V- binding, followed by flow cytometry was used to determine cell cycle and apoptosis of tumor cells aftertreatment. Expression of regulatory proteins such as NF-κß, cyclin D1, p53 and vascular endothelial growth factor was determined by western blot.C. mukul and GS significantly inhibited tumor cell growth, caused cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in both tumor cells. Such activities appeared to bedue to inhibition of NF-κß, cyclin D1and restoration of p53. Overall our data suggests that C. mukul and GS may be developed as chemopreventive andchemotherapeutic drug for oral cancer. Keywords: Commiphora mukul, Oral cancer, Antitumor, Cell cycle, Apoptosis, NF-κß, Cyclin D1, P53
Chemical control of polar behavior in bicomponent short-period superlattices
Using first-principles density functional calculations, we study the
interplay of ferroelectricity and polar discontinuities in a range of 1-1 oxide
superlattices, built out of ferroelectric and paraelectric components. Studies
have been carried out for a varied choice of chemical composition of the
components. We find that, when polar interfaces are present, the polar
discontinuities induce off- centric movements in the ferroelectric layers, even
though the ferroelectric is only one unit cell thick. The distortions yield
non-switchable polarizations, with magnitudes comparable to those of the
corresponding bulk ferroelectrics. In contrast, in superlattices with no polar
discontinuity at the interfaces, the off-centric movements in the ferroelectric
layer are usually suppressed. The details of the behavior and functional
properties are, however, found to be sensitive to epitaxial strain, rotational
instabilities and second-order Jahn-Teller activity, and are therefore strongly
in uenced by the chemical composition of the paraelectric layer.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Bumber landings of koth, Otolithoides biauritus by bottom set gill net at Satpati
Bumber catch of Koth, Otolithoides biauritus was reported on 19th December 2002 at Satpati. Koth was caught in 18-20 meter depths at a distance of 15-18 km north west off Satpati. The heavy concenteration indicates the potential fishing ground of koth in this region
Adverse perinatal outcome in diabetic mother treated with oral hypoglycemic agents vs. insulin
Background: Insulin has been the primary mode of therapy in diabetic mother for glycemic control as oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA) were initially thought to have teratogenic effect. Recent data supports the use of certain OHA; this study was designed to compare the perinatal outcomes in infants born to diabetic mother treated with insulin vs. oral hypoglycemic agents and to find out the relation of adverse perinatal events to glycemic control in both groups. Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital. 108 neonates born to diabetic mother between October 2014 to September 2016 were taken for study immediately after delivery after excluding the mothers who were treated with lifestyle modification and/or dietary modification alone only. 60 mothers had received insulin and 48 OHA for glycaemic control. Glycemic control was assessed by HbA1C estimation on the day of delivery. The infants were followed up in neonatal care unit for perinatal complications. Main outcome measure(s): birth weight, gestational age, respiratory problems, birth injury, birth asphyxia, congenital anomalies, hypoglycemia, hypocalcaemia, hyperbillirubinemia. Results: Out of 108 infants, 27 were born to pregestational and 81 to gestational diabetic mothers. 60(55.5%) were treated with insulin and rest with OHA, 53(49.1%) had optimal glycemic control. Both the groups had similar glycemic control in the third trimester. None of the perinatal outcomes showed significant difference between insulin and OHA group except neonatal hyperbillirubinemia. (p=0.013, RR=8 and OR=0.106). Within the optimal glycemic control (HbA1C <8), LGA has significant association with the insulin group than OHA (p=0.012, RR=2.217 and OR=4.2018).Conclusions: As compared to insulin, oral hypoglycemic agents have similar glycemic control and no adverse perinatal outcomes and can be used in pregnant mothers with diabetes mellitus from poor socioeconomic and educational background for its low cost and better patient compliance. Within the glycemic control, maternal treatment with insulin showed significant difference in LGA compared to OHA which needs further studies for validation
Electronic Structure, Phonons and Dielectric Anomaly in Ferromagnetic Insulating Double Perovskite La2NiMnO6
Using first-principles density functional calculations, we study the
electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic insulating
double-perovskite compound La2NiMnO6, which has been reported to exhibit
interesting magnetic field sensitive dielectric anomaly as a function of
temperature. Our study reveals existence of very soft infra-red active phonons
that couple strongly with spins at the Ni and Mn sites through modification of
the super-exchange interaction. We suggest that these modes are the origin for
observed dielectric anomaly in La2NiMnO6.Comment: 4 pages,3 figure
Bilateral floating knee: a rare case report with review of literature
Floating knee injuries are commonly seen nowadays due to increase in road traffic accidents. However, bilateral presentation of floating knee is a rare injury and challenging to orthopaedicians for a good functional outcome. We hereby present a rare case of bilateral floating knee injury in a 45 year old male treated with open reduction and internal fixation in a staged procedure. Functional assessment was done using modified Karlstrom-Olerud criteria which showed excellent outcome. Union was achieved in approximately 7 months. Decreased knee movements over left side as compared to right side was only complication seen
