Thermodynamic anomalies in the presence of dissipation: from the free particle to the harmonic oscillator
A free particle coupled to a heat bath can exhibit a number of thermodynamic
anomalies like a negative specific heat or reentrant classicality. These
low-temperature phenomena are expected to be modified at very low temperatures
where finite-size effects associated with the discreteness of the energy
spectrum become relevant. In this paper, we explore in which form the
thermodynamic anomalies of the free damped particle appear for a damped
harmonic oscillator. Since the discreteness of the oscillator's energy spectrum
is fully accounted for, the results are valid for arbitrary temperatures. As
expected, they are in agreement with the third law of thermodynamics and
indicate how the thermodynamic anomalies of the free damped particle can be
reconciled with the third law. Particular attention is paid to the transition
from the harmonic oscillator to the free particle when the limit of the
oscillator frequency to zero is taken.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Reentrant classicality of a damped system
For a free particle, the coupling to its environment can be the relevant
mechanism to induce quantum behavior as the temperature is lowered. We study
general linear environments with a spectral density proportional to {\omega}^s
at low frequencies and consider in particular the specific heat of the free
damped particle. For super-Ohmic baths with s>=2, a reentrant classical
behavior is found. As the temperature is lowered, the specific heat decreases
from the classical value of k_B/2, thereby indicating the appearence of quantum
effects. However, the classical value of the specific heat is restored as the
temperature approaches zero. This surprising behavior is due to the suppressed
density of bath degrees of freedom at low frequencies. For s<2, the specific
heat at zero temperature increases linearly with s from -k_B/2 to k_B/2. An
Ohmic bath, s=1, is thus very special in the sense that it represents the only
case where the specific heat vanishes at zero temperature.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Polymorphic Structure of the Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) Locus: An NcoI Polymorphism in the First Intron of the Human TNF-ß Gene Correlates with A Variant Amino Acid in Position 26 and a Reduced Level of TNF-ß Production
T lymphocytes from patients with primary biliary cirrhosis produce reduced amounts of lymphotoxin, tumor necrosis factor and interferon-gamma upon mitogen stimulation
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is considered an autoimmune disease characterized by destruction of small intrahepatic
bile ducts by lymphocytes. Altered functions of these lymphocytes might reflect an abnormal immune response leading
to tissue damage. We investigated lymphokine secretion by mitogen-stimulated T lymphocytes from the liver biopsies
of patients with PBC and for comparison also peripheral blood. In PBC, diminished synthesis of lymphotoxin (TNFP),
tumor necrosis factor (TNFa) and interferon-y (IFIVy) was found both in T-cell lines from liver tissue and in peripheral
blood. The reduction was most prominent for TNFP in early histological stages of PBC, and appeared to be a stable
phenomenon when T cells were tested after long-term tissue culture. Analysis of mRNA levels indicates a possible link
between reduced TNFP production and a defect in interleukin-2 transcription. The data suggest that diminished
lymphokine production in patients with PBC may play ;In important role in the immanopathogenesis of this disease
Combinatorial functions of two chimeric antibodies directed to human CD4 and one directed to the a-chain of the human interleukin-2 receptor
The general feasibility of chimerization of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) has already been shown for a large number of
them. In order to evaluate in vitro parameters relevant to immunosuppressive therapy, we have chimerized and synthesized
two anti-CD4 mAbs recognizing two different epitopes on the human T-lymphocyte antigen, CD4. The chimerized mAbs
are produced at levels corresponding to those of the original hybridoma cell lines. With respect to activation of human
complement, the individual Abs are negative; however, when used in combination, complement activation was performed.
When applied in combination, they were found to modulate the CD4 antigen, whereas the individual mAb do not display
this property. Individually they mediate an up to 60% inhibition of the mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR). However, by
combination of an anti-CD4 mAb with one directed against the a-chain of the human IL2 receptor, nearly 100% inhibition
of the MLR was achieved, even with reduced dosage of the mAbs. Our data suggest that the combination of an anti-CD4
mAb and an anti-IL2Rcc chain mAb is more effective with respect to immunosuppression than each mAb by itself, indicating
that this mAb cocktail could be a new strategy for immunosuppressive therapy
Is healthcare a team sport? Widening our lens on interprofessional collaboration and education in sport and exercise medicine.
Effective interprofessional collaboration (IPC) has great potential to improve healthcare delivery. Therefore, students and trainees in healthcare professions should be prepared for a collaborative workforce through interprofessional education (IPE) settings. However, IPC and IPE are rarely addressed in sport and exercise medicine (SEM), although the field significantly impacts the healthcare system. Hence, we conducted a webinar to promote IPC and IPE in the Swiss SEM community. The lessons resulting from the webinar were: (1) professions involved in SEM should have opportunities to learn, with, from and about other professions in healthcare to achieve mutual respect and understanding; (2) IPC and IPE in SEM may raise awareness, value and recognition of the contributions by exercise scientists in healthcare; (3) IPC and IPE may consider collaborating with a variety of professions not traditionally integrated into healthcare but involved in broader public health and physical activity promotion. In summary, sports and exercise professions should embrace interprofessional approaches to better realise their contribution to healthcare and public health
