    Fuelling the Fourth Propulsion Revolution: An Opportunity for All

    Decarbonisation and the creation of (net) zero carbon fuels presents a significant economic opportunity for shipowners, companies and countries, as fuel producers, importers and exporters. This report, written in collaboration with Professor Dr Stefan Ulreich, University of Applied Sciences, Biberach, Germany, presents new research that demonstrates how shipping will play a fundamental role in delivering these fuels globally and act as an enabler for governments and industries to achieve their climate targets.It showcases why the maritime industry must be accounted for in international decarbonisation plans and have access to the same (net) zero carbon fuels they will be transporting to decarbonise; the world's renewable energy generation would need to increase up to 100% just to supply enough (net) zero carbon fuel to power the shipping industry.The enormous scale of the opportunity and transformation of the fourth propulsion revolution for governments, ports, developing economies, and key maritime stakeholders is laid out in this report

    Permeation Fill-Tube Design for Inertial Confinement Fusion Target Capsules

    A unique approach for permeation filling of nonpermeable inertial confinement fusion target capsules with deuterium— tritium (DT) is presented. This process uses a permeable capsule coupled into the final target capsule with a 0.03-mm-diameter fill tube. Leak free permeation filling of glow-discharge polymerization (GDP) targets using this method have been successfully demonstrated, as well as ice layering of the target, yielding an inner ice surface roughness of 1-µm rms (root mean square). Finally, the measured DT ice-thickness profile for this experiment was used to validate a thermal model’s prediction of the same thickness profile

    Further observations on the usefulness of the sonographic Murphy sign in the evaluation of suspected acute cholecystitis

    A positive sonographic Murphy sign, the presence of maximal tenderness elicited over a sonographically localized gallbladder, has been reported to be a helpful adjunctive finding in patients with proven acute cholecystitis who are evaluated with ultrasonography. We evaluated 200 patients with right upper quadrant pain, thought to be acute cholecystitis. Results of ultrasound examinations and subsequent follow-up were tabulated. The sensitivity of the sonographic Murphy sign in acute cholecystitis was 86% with a specificity of 35%, positive predictive value of 43%, and negative predictive value of 82%. The sensitivity of the sonographic findings, including stones, gallbladder wall edema, and pericholecystic fluid collections, was 93%, a specificity of 53%. The combination of the Murphy sign accompanied by gallstones yielded a specificity of 77%. The large number of false positives, and only moderate improvement in specificity when accompanied by gallstones, makes this sign unreliable in separating acute from chronic cholecystitis. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/38197/1/1870230304_ftp.pd

    A Multi-Technique Study of C2H4 Adsorption on Fe3O4(001)

    The adsorption/desorption of ethene (C2H4), also commonly known as ethylene, on Fe3O4(001) was studied under ultrahigh vacuum conditions using temperature programmed desorption (TPD), scanning tunneling microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) based computations. To interpret the TPD data, we have employed a new analysis method based on equilibrium thermodynamics. C2H4 adsorbs intact at all coverages and interacts most strongly with surface defects such as antiphase domain boundaries and Fe adatoms. On the regular surface, C2H4 binds atop surface Fe sites up to a coverage of 2 molecules per (rt2xrt2)R45{\deg} unit cell, with every second Fe occupied. A desorption energy of 0.36 eV is determined by analysis of the TPD spectra at this coverage, which is approximately 0.1-0.2 eV lower than the value calculated by DFT + U with van der Waals corrections. Additional molecules are accommodated in between the Fe rows. These are stabilized by attractive interactions with the molecules adsorbed at Fe sites. The total capacity of the surface for C2H4 adsorption is found to be close to 4 molecules per (rt2xrt2)R45{\deg} unit cell

    Force, charge, and conductance of an ideal metallic nanowire

    The conducting and mechanical properties of a metallic nanowire formed at the junction between two macroscopic metallic electrodes are investigated. Both two- and three-dimensional wires with a W(ide)-N(arrow)-W(ide) geometry are modelled in the free-electron approximation with hard-wall boundary conditions. Tunneling and quantum-size effects are treated exactly using the scattering matrix formalism. Oscillations of order E_F/lambda_F in the tensile force are found when the wire is stretched to the breaking point, which are synchronized with quantized jumps in the conductance. The force and conductance are shown to be essentially independent of the width of the wide sections (electrodes). The exact results are compared with an adiabatic approximation; the later is found to overestimate the effects of tunneling, but still gives qualitatively reasonable results for nanowires of length L>>lambda_F, even for this abrupt geometry. In addition to the force and conductance, the net charge of the nanowire is calculated and the effects of screening are included within linear response theory. Mesoscopic charge fluctuations of order e are predicted which are strongly correlated with the mesoscopic force fluctuations. The local density of states at the Fermi energy exhibits nontrivial behavior which is correlated with fine structure in the force and conductance, showing the importance of treating the whole wire as a mesoscopic system rather than treating only the narrow part.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure

    The Phenotype and Treatment of WIP Deficiency: Literature Synopsis and Review of a Patient With Pre-transplant Serial Donor Lymphocyte Infusions to Eliminate CMV

    Early diagnosis of primary immunodeficiency disorders (PID) is vital and allows directed treatment, especially in syndromes with severe or profound combined immunodeficiency. In PID patients with perinatal CMV or other opportunistic, invasive infections (e.g., Pneumocystis or Aspergillus), multi-organ morbidity may already arise within the first months of life, before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or gene therapy can be undertaken, compromising the definitive treatment and outcome. Deficiency of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) protein-interacting protein (WIP deficiency) causes an autosomal recessive, WAS-like syndrome with early-onset combined immunodeficiency that has been described in three pedigrees to date. While WAS typically includes combined immunodeficiency, microthrombocytopenia, and eczema, the clinical and laboratory phenotypes of WIP-deficient patients-including lymphocyte subsets, platelets, lymphocyte proliferation in vitro, and IgE-varied widely and did not entirely recapitulate WAS, impeding early diagnosis in the reported patients. To elucidate the phenotype of WIP deficiency, we provide a comprehensive synopsis of clinical and laboratory features of all hitherto-described patients (n = 6) and WIP negative mice. Furthermore, we summarize the treatment modalities and outcomes of these patients and review in detail the course of one of them who was successfully treated with serial, unconditioned, maternal, HLA-identical donor lymphocyte infusions (DLI) against life-threatening, invasive CMV infection, followed by a TCR alpha beta/CD19-depleted, treosulfan/melphalan-conditioned, peripheral blood HSCT and repetitive, secondary-prophylactic, CMV-specific DLI with 1-year post-HSCT follow-up. This strategy could be useful in other patients with substantial premorbidity, considered "too bad to transplant," who have an HLA-identical family donor, to eliminate infections and bridge until definitive treatment
