    Phenomenological scaling laws for ‘‘semidilute’’ macromolecule solutions from light scattering by optical probe particles

    Polymer solution dynamics may be inferred from light scattering spectra of dissolved optical probe particles. We compare a variety of probes in solutions of several polymers. In the ‘‘overlapping’’ concentration/molecular weight regime, the Stokes–Einstein equation fails by up to a factor of 2, while the probe diffusion coefficient D follows a scaling law D/D0=exp(−aMγcνRδ) (c, M, and R are the polymer concentration, molecular weight, and the probe radius, respectively). Experimentally, γ=0.8±0.1, ν=0.6–1.0, and δ=−0.1 to 0, contrary to the theoretical predictions γ=0 and δ=1. With very high molecular‐weight polymers, we observe a further ‘‘entangled’’ regime, characterized by huge (104) failures of the Stokes–Einstein equation and the appearance of ‘‘fast’’ modes in the scattering spectrum.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70873/2/JCPSA6-82-11-5242-1.pd

    POD for optimal control of the Cahn-Hilliard system using spatially adapted snapshots

    The present work considers the optimal control of a convective Cahn-Hilliard system, where the control enters through the velocity in the transport term. We prove the existence of a solution to the considered optimal control problem. For an efficient numerical solution, the expensive high-dimensional PDE systems are replaced by reduced-order models utilizing proper orthogonal decomposition (POD-ROM). The POD modes are computed from snapshots which are solutions of the governing equations which are discretized utilizing adaptive finite elements. The numerical tests show that the use of POD-ROM combined with spatially adapted snapshots leads to large speedup factors compared with a high-fidelity finite element optimization

    Optical probe study of a nonentangling macromolecule solution--bovine serum albumin: Water

    The diffusion coefficient D of polystyrene latex spheres in bovine serum albumin:water was studied as a function of protein concentration c for 0 c D fails by as much as 25 to 50%, D being larger than predicted from the sphere radius R and the solution viscosity. Probe particles with R as large as 0.62 [mu]m were used. D fits well to the form D = Doexp(-[alpha]cv) for [alpha] = 0.004 to 0.008 and v = 0.96 to 0.99. Serum albumin is a globular protein, so chain entanglement cannot cause these non-Stokes--Einsteinian effects, which are presumably due to sphere:albumin interactions. Polystyrene spheres in semidilute polyethylene oxide:water (G. S. Ullmann, K. Ullmann, R. M. Lindner, and G. D. J. Phillies, J. Phys.     Features of pulsed synchronization of a systems with a tree-dimensional phase space

    Features of synchronization picture in the system with the limit cycle embedded in a three-dimensional phase space are considered. By the example of Ressler system and Dmitriev - Kislov generator under the action of a periodic sequence of delta - function it is shown, that synchronization picture significantly depends on the direction of pulse action.     Dinuclear Tb and Dy complexes supported by hybrid Schiff-base/calixarene ligands: synthesis, structures and magnetic properties

    The synthesis of the new lanthanide complexes [HNEt3_{3}][Dy2_{2}(HL1^{1})(L1^{1})] (5), and [Ln2_{2}(L2_{2})2_{2}] (Ln = TbIII^{III} (7), DyIII^{III} (8)) supported by the hybrid Schiff-base/calix[4]arene ligands H4_{4}L1^{1} (25-[2-((2-methylphenol)imino)ethoxy]-26,27,28-trihydroxy-calix[4]arene) and H3_{3}L2^{2} (25-[2-((2-methylpyridine)imino)ethoxy]-26,27,28-trihydroxy-calix[4]arene) are reported. Spectroscopic data (for 5) and X-ray crystallographic analysis (for 7·4MeCN, 8·4MeCN) reveal the presence of dimeric structures, featuring doubly-bridged NO4_{4}Ln(μ-O)2_{2}LnO4_{4}N (5) or N2_{2}O3_{3}Ln(μ-O)2_{2}LnO3_{3}N2_{2} cores (7, 8) with seven-coordinated Ln3+^{3+} ions. The magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of 5, 7 and 8 were studied by variable temperature dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The χ′′(T) vs. T plots show no maxima in zero field, but the maxima can be detected under a 3 kOe dc field. The relaxation times τ obey the Arrhenius law above 5 K. Anisotropy barriers of ∼18 cm1^{-1} (26 K) for 5 and ∼23 cm1^{-1} (33 K) for 8 were determined

Overprotective parental child-rearing style may increase the disease burden in the offspring. Furthermore, this child-rearing style may also play a pathogenetic role by transmitting trauma- and stressor-related disorders (TSRD) across generations. Studies with animals have demonstrated that the mother’s immediate and expansive protection of the newborn decreases the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis activity in the offspring. However, few studies have investigated how stress impact humans raised in an overprotective manner. In a cross-sectional study with 40 healthy students recalling their overprotective upbringing, we show an increase in the dehydroepiandrostendione (DHEA) concentration and a reduction in the cortisol/DHEA-ratio in hair. Additionally, this child rearing style was associated with heightened indications of mental burden, depressiveness, and sense of coherence. Our results provide insight into the roots and consequences of psychological trauma across several generations. Further investigations focusing particularly on multigenerational transmission in extremely burdened families will augment our results
