Rationalisation and Intertextuality: An Analysis of the Language of Men’s Reactions to Gender Equality in Zulu Sofola’s The Sweet Trap
It has been observed in Zulu Sofola’s The Sweet Trap that male characters view and speak about the female characters in very discriminating manner with the aim of subjugating women and maintaining their supremacy over them. This paper explores the discursive strategies in terms the linguistic and non – linguistic strategies which men use to maintain their dominance over women in Zulu Sofola’s play. The paper also shows that men explicitly (through verbal and non- verbal actions) and implicitly (through the demands of culture) discriminate against women or suppress gender equality or recognition and even discredit the women through language. The two discursive strategies of maintaining male power and female marginality are rationalization and intertextuality. While rationalisation is a strategy in which men use pure reason instead of experience to dominate women, intertextuality is the use of legitimate events or mechanisms operating in the society to work against women. In rationalisation, men try to vindicate themselves and blame their actions on their forefathers’ age-long practices (tradition). This paper explores the language use in these practices in the above-mentioned text. Keywords: Rationalisation, Inhibition, Aggression, Justification and Intertextualit
Phonological Interference in the Spoken English Performance of the Izon Speaker in Nigeria: A Product of Systemic and Interlanguage Factors.
This paper sets out to examine the phonological interference in the spoken English performance of the Izon speaker. It emphasizes that the level of interference is not just as a result of the systemic differences that exist between both language systems (Izon and English) but also as a result of the interlanguage factors such as the level of the individual’s interaction in and with the L1, his level of education and access to oral English lessons while in school. The research reveals some troublesome contrasts in the two languages. The three factors that determine the level of interference are: the level of immersion of the individual in Izon; the level of the individual’s education; the individual’s oral English education exposure. The English language teacher has to be aware of these factors and pay particular attention to the differences in the phonological systems of the first language (L1) and the second language (L2) which can cause interference. Keywords: Mother-tongue, First language, Second language, Interlanguage, and Immersion
Assessment of Zinc Level and its Relationship with Some Hematological Parameters among Patients with Sickle Cell Anemia in Abakaliki, Nigeria
Background: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited hemoglobin (Hb) disorder with susceptibility for oxidative damage due to chronic redox imbalance in red blood cells (RBCs) which often results in hemolysis, endothelial injury, recurrent vaso-occlusive episodes, and derangement in hematological parameters. Zinc is an antioxidant which helps to reduce oxidative damage. This study aimed to assess the serum level of zinc and its relationship with some hematological parameters in patients with SCA (HbSS).
Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional comparative study which involved HbSS patients in steady state with sex‐ and age‐matched HbAA control. Assay of Hb phenotype, serum zinc level, and some haematological parameters were done. Ethical approval was gotten from the institutional review board, and each participant gave informed written consent before recruitment into the study. Analysis of all data obtained was done using SPSS software, version 20.
Results: Thirty adult patients with SCA and thirty sex- and age-matched controls with a mean age of 26.7 ± 7.6 years and 27.7± 5.3, respectively, were studied. There was a significant decrease in serum zinc level among patients with HbSS compared to those with HbAA (P = 0.038). Similarly, patients with HbSS had significantly lower Hb level, packed cell volume, and RBC count compared to HbAA control (P < 0.05). On the contrary, patients with HbSS had significantly higher white cell count and platelet count compared to HbAA individuals (P < 0.05). Correlation between serum zinc level and blood counts showed weak positive relationship between zinc level and Hb level (r = 0.04, P = 0.8) and weak negative relationship between serum zinc level and platelet count (r = −0.3, P = 0.1), as well as zinc and white blood cell (WBC) count (r = −0.2, P = 0.4).
Conclusion: There was a significantly low level of zinc among patients with HbSS compared with HbAA controls. Patients with HbSS had zinc levels that weakly correlated with Hb level positively but weakly negatively correlated with platelet and WBC counts. Further studies are required on a wider scale to assess whether zinc supplementation may improve blood counts in patients with SCA
Potentials of Momordica angustisepala fiber in enhancing strengths of normal portland cement concrete
Presence of cracks in concrete affect the integrity. It reduces the life expectancy of concrete structures and is often responsible for collapse of structures, especially in the developing nations. At the root of these cracks is the very low tensile strength of concrete. Various techniques have been suggested for the enhancing the tensile strength, among which is the use of discontinuous micro fibers of various nature. This research investigated the use of Momordica angustisepala (Ma) fiber to enhance concrete strength. Concrete containing coconut fiber was adopted as a control. Slump test, air entrainment test, compression test and split tensile test were carried out on specimens. Results of the research indicate that an optimum Momordica angustisepala fiber contents of 0.25 and 0.5% enhanced respectively the compressive strength by 4.37% and the tensile strength by 10%. The results clearly
show that this renewable material has the potential to enhance the compressive and tensile strengths of concrete
Analiza kretanja rasta proizvodnje poljoprivrednih kultura u Nigeriji (1961. –2014.)
This paper focuses on trend analysis of crop productivity growth in Nigeria between 1961 and 2014. It was therefore intended to estimate the effect of different factors of production that influence crop output and to compute their technical efficiency, technological change and total factor productivity change. Panel data was broken into land, labour, tractor, fertilizer and animal power. Descriptive statistics, Cobb-Douglas production analysis and Malmquist Productivity index were the tools employed for the analysis. The result of the trend analysis shows that time has a positive effect on crop production and also shows that there is an increase in crop output, land, labour, tractor, fertilizer and animal power over years. Land and animal power are statistically significant at 1% probability level and a unit increase in land and animal power, crop output increases by 2.176772 tons and 0.7531192 tons respectively, this implies that land and animal power have a positive effect on crop output in Nigeria. Labour and tractor have negative impact on crop output, while fertilizer has no significant effect on crop output. The efficiency change, technical change and total factor productivity change were also analyzed. According to the analysis, Nigeria experienced the highest agricultural productivity from 1992, with value of 1.166. It is therefore recommended that the use of agricultural land should be increased, relevant policies should address the constraints to technology progress, and efficiency should be promoted in order to improve productivity growth.
Life Cycle Assessment of Environmental Impacts of Using Concrete or Timber to Construct a Duplex Residential Building
Traditionally, the choice of construction materials depended principally on the strengths of materials, cost of material, availability of materials, simplicity of erection, aesthetics and technical expertise available to the society. This meant that little attention was paid to the environment impacts of materials adopted for civil construction. After centuries of speedy advancement accompanied by deteriorating ecosystem as evidenced by the global climate change and the accompanying gap between the rich and the poor, the world is becoming more conscious of the ecosystem and the future of mankind. This has led to the growing quest for sustainable development. In the more recent years, environmental and sustainability factors are becoming compelling factors in the choice of construction materials. Researches focused on materials for affordable houses for the increasing low income masses are on the increase. This research focuses on the environmental impact performance of concrete and timber applied to a modest duplex residential building. It explores using Athena Impact Estimator software to model the greenhouses gases expressed in terms of carbon dioxide equivalents, sulphur dioxide equivalents, phosphate equivalents and ethane equivalents potentials obtainable from using concrete or timber to build a duplex residential building. From the various results obtained, it is very evident that timber construction is more eco-friendly in terms of carbon emission reduction which translates to reducing global warming, thermal insulation and energy efficiency. This will be helpful in making choice for building materials to be adopted for affordable houses developing countries
Multinomial Logit Estimation of Income Sources by Watermelon Farmers in Northeastern Nigeria
The main objective of the research was to use multinomial logit model to estimate income sources of watermelon farmers in northeastern Nigeria. A total of 434 farmers were sampled through multi-stage sampling procedure covering three Local Government Areas of Yobe state, Nigeria. The sources were personal savings, friends and relatives, Bank loans and cooperative/thrift societies. The results revealed that farm size, age and level of education were significant at 5% probability level and positively influenced the utilization of income from friends and relatives. Farmers' level of education, total cost of production and farm size significantly influenced farmers to obtain loans from banks. The marginal effects were 0.0504, 2.75 and 0.0038 showing the degrees of probabilities the variables can influence bank loans. Watermelon farmers can only obtain loans from cooperative and thrift society based on their farm size, total revenue, age, total cost and their level of output. These variables were significant at 1% and 5% probability levels with appropriate signs. The study concluded that 60% of the farmers fund their farm through personal savings and was difficult to get bank loans. It was recommended that micro-savings be encouraged among farmers and cooperative/thrift societies should be encouraged and adequately developed through the Non-Governmental Organizations
PREDICTION OF FRESH AND HARDENED PROPERTIES OF NORMAL CONCRETE VIA CHOICE OF AGGREGATE SIZES, CONCRETE MIX-RATIOS AND CEMENT
Concrete is the most commonly used building material for building most of the world’s buildings and infrastructure. After centuries of usage, it still remains the most widely adopted construction material worldwide. But in many developing nations, the frequent occurrence of building collapse has been mostly ascribed to poor quality concrete. As Nigeria is noted for frequent building collapse, this research reproduces standard concrete practices commonly adopted in Nigerian construction industry with the intent to predict design strength via choice of coarse aggregate sizes ( 12.5 mm, 19 mm, 30 mm and mixed), concrete mix-ratios (1:2:4, 1:3:6, 1:2:3) and ordinary Portland cement types (42.5R and 32.5N). Cement compound’s composition tests, fresh property tests and hardened property tests were conducted on samples. Test results from building cites of different Local Government Areas of Lagos State, Nigeria obtained in 2010 are compared with the compressive test results of this research via statistical tools. Results indicate that the fresh properties and hardened properties are influenced in a proportional manner by the sizes of aggregates and that the choices of aggregate sizes, concrete mix-ratios and cement types can be used to predict the fresh and hardened properties of normal concrete. This study also show that poor concrete production is one of the principal cause of frequent building collapse in Nigeria
Women’s Labour Force Participation: Economic Growth Nexus in Sub-Saharan African Countries
Women’s labour force participation is an aspect of empowerment and a leeway to achieving the SDGs due to the contribution of women’s labour to economic growth. This study investigated the impact of women labour force participation on economic growth in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. Important lessons were drawn from Israel as to how Israel has been empowering and currently improving women’s labour force participation and economic growth in general. The study employed a two-step system Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) with panel data from 35 selected SSA countries. The findings showed a positive relationship between gross fixed capital formation, female labour force participation rate, economic growth in SSA countries, and a negative relationship between growth in the region and fertility rate. The study therefore recommended that governments should provide a policy framework to favour and encourage more women’s participation in the SSA region
