    Observations of Collision-Induced Dipole Transitions Associated with High-Lying States of Calcium in Rare Gases

    More than 20 collision-induced dipole (CID) transitions have been observed in the absorption spectrum of calcium below 2400 A in the presence of xenon or krypton. Some have also been observed in the presence of argon, neon or helium. The measured shifts and the effective oscillator strengths show a close correlation with the s-wave amplitude for the electron scattering by a rare-gas atom. This correlation leads us to the conclusion that the low-energy-electron-scattering process is responsible for the appearance of the CID transitions

    Graves\u27 Disease Associated with Goserelin Acetate

    We describe a case of Graves\u27 disease associated with goserelin acetate. A 47-year-old woman experienced thyrotoxicosis during the administration of goserelin acetate, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) -agonist. Since the TSH receptor-antibody was positive, and a thyroid scintigram showed diffuse goiter and high uptake, she was diagnosed as having Graves\u27 disease. 26 months after treatment with thiamazole, she recovered. We speculate that the administration of goserelin acetate may be one of the triggers of Graves\u27 disease

    Near-Ultraviolet and Visible Spectroscopy of HAYABUSA Spacecraft Re-entry

    HAYABUSA is the first spacecraft ever to land on and lift off from any celestial body other than the moon. The mission, which returned asteroid samples to the Earth while overcoming various technical hurdles, ended on June 13, 2010, with the planned atmospheric re-entry. In order to safely deliver the sample return capsule, the HAYABUSA spacecraft ended its 7-year journey in a brilliant "artificial fireball" over the Australian desert. Spectroscopic observation was carried out in the near-ultraviolet and visible wavelengths between 3000 and 7500 \AA at 3 - 20 \AA resolution. Approximately 100 atomic lines such as Fe I, Mg I, Na I, Al I, Cr I, Mn I, Ni I, Ti I, Li I, Zn I, O I, and N I were identified from the spacecraft. Exotic atoms such as Cu I, Mo I, Xe I and Hg I were also detected. A strong Li I line (6708 \AA) at a height of ~55 km originated from the onboard Li-Ion batteries. The FeO molecule bands at a height of ~63 km were probably formed in the wake of the spacecraft. The effective excitation temperature as determined from the atomic lines varied from 4500 K to 6000 K. The observed number density of Fe I was about 10 times more abundant than Mg I after the spacecraft explosion. N2+(1-) bands from a shock layer and CN violet bands from the sample return capsule's ablating heat shield were dominant molecular bands in the near-ultraviolet region of 3000 - 4000 \AA. OH(A-X) band was likely to exist around 3092 \AA. A strong shock layer from the HAYABUSA spacecraft was rapidly formed at heights between 93 km and 83 km, which was confirmed by detection of N2+(1-) bands with a vibration temperature of ~13000 K. Gray-body temperature of the capsule at a height of ~42 km was estimated to be ~2437 K which is matched to a theoretical prediction. The final message of the HAYABUSA spacecraft and its sample return capsule are discussed through our spectroscopy.Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ, 22 pages, 7 figures, 6 table

    Partial Covering Interpretation of the X-Ray Spectrum of the NLS1 1H 0707-495

    The X-ray spectrum of 1H 0707-495 obtained with XMM-Newton showing a deep flux drop at ~7 keV (Boller et al. 2002) is studied based on the partial covering concept. The previously inferred extreme iron overabundance can be reduced down to ~3x solar if the hard component gradually steepens at high energies. The spectral shape supports that 1H 0707-495 is an AGN analogue of the galactic black-hole binaries in the soft state. Interpreting the soft excess as the emission from an optically-thick disk, the minimum black hole mass M is estimated to be 2 x 10^6 solar masses from the intrinsic luminosity corrected for partial covering. Based on the slim disk model, the observed disk temperature implies that the luminosity is close to the Eddington limit. The rapid and large flux variations with little change in the spectral shape can also be explained, if not all, as due to changes in the partial covering fraction.     Paleoenvironmental Analyses of the Buried Peat Deposit during the mid-Holocene at the Desaki Coast in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, Weatern Japan

    The buried peat deposit was foud in the sand beach on the Desaki coast (Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture), the northeastern coast of Seto Inland Sea. In this study, we performed sulfur and diatom analyses of the deposit. The results were used along with 14C dates and the eruption age (7300 cal BP) of Kikai-Akahoya tephra (K-Ab) to derive sedimentary environments of the deposit. K-Ah was detected just below the peat deposit. At the culmination of the Jomon transgression, the peat deposit had been formed in brackish environments of salt marsh for about 300 years. In order to reconstruct local paleovegetation, we analyzed pollen, wood and plant fossils in the deposit. The results show vegetational transition from a deciduous broadleaved forest mainly of Ouercus subgen. Lepidobalanus to Pinus forest. In spite of the Holocene thermal optimum, the vegetation dominated by Ouercus subgen. Cyclobanopsis was not recognized at the Desaki site, as has been shown in many other regions of regions of western Japan. Ouercus sect. Prinus was replaced by Ouercus sect. Aegilops as the dominant section of Ouercus subgen. Lepidobalanus, suggesting early establishment of traditional rural vegetation of 'Satoyama' in Japan. However, no evidence for human agency has been obtained from the mid-Holocene archaeological sites around the Desaki site. Thus it is more likely that this vegetational transition resulted from the succession caused by natural forces such as ecological disturbance and climatic and/or endemic situations rather than by cultural deforestation

    Incidence of gastrointestinal perforation associated with bevacizumab in combination with neoadjuvant chemotherapy as first-line treatment of advanced ovarian, fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer: analysis of a Japanese healthcare claims database

    [Objective] To assess the incidence of bevacizumab-associated gastrointestinal (GI) perforation during first-line treatment of patients with ovarian, fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in Japanese real-world clinical practice. [Methods] A retrospective study was conducted using a healthcare claims database owned by Medical Data Vision Co., Ltd. (study period, 2008–2020). Patients who initiated first-line treatment of ovarian, fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer were identified and divided into NAC and primary debulking surgery (PDS) groups. The incidence of bevacizumab-associated GI perforation was compared within the NAC group and between the groups. [Results] Paclitaxel + carboplatin (TC) was most commonly used as first-line treatment (39.5% and 59.6% in the NAC and PDS groups, respectively). TC + bevacizumab was used in 9.3% and 11.6% of patients in the NAC and PDS groups, respectively. In the NAC group receiving TC, the proportion of patients with risk factors for GI perforation was lower among patients with versus without concomitant bevacizumab. The incidence of GI perforation in the NAC group was 0.38% (1/266 patients) in patients receiving TC + bevacizumab and 0.18% (2/1, 131 patients) in patients receiving TC without bevacizumab (risk ratio=2.13; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.19 to 23.36; risk difference=0.20; 95% CI=−0.58 to 0.97). None of the 319 patients in the PDS group receiving TC + bevacizumab had GI perforation. [Conclusion] No notable increase was observed in GI perforation associated with NAC containing bevacizumab. We conclude that bevacizumab is prescribed with sufficient care in Japan to avoid GI perforation

    Comparison of Epirubicin-Iodized Oil Suspension and Emulsion for Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization in VX2 Tumor

    To compare the antitumor efficacy and safety of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) by epirubicin suspension (epirubicin suspension: epirubicin-iodized oil mixture without solution) to that by epirubicin emulsion (epirubicin emulsion: epirubicin-iodized oil mixture with solution), the efficacy of treatment by administration of either an epirubicin suspension or emulsion was examined in an animal model. Changes in plasma epirubicin concentration were compared over 24 h immediately after treatment, and enhanced ultrasonographic and histopathological analysis subsequently conducted 7 days after treatment to determine the growth ratio and proportion of viable tumor cells. The growth ratio and proportion of viable tumor cells were found to be significantly lower in the suspension group than in the emulsion group while the plasma epirubicin concentration was found to be significantly higher in the suspension group than in the emulsion group. These results indicate that administration of an epirubicin suspension is a superior form of TACE compared to that of administration of an epirubicin emulsion
