    Synthesis and Applications of Synthetic Peptides

    The synthesis and applications of the peptides are gaining increasing popularity as a result of the developments in biotechnology and bioengineering areas and for a number of research purposes including cancer diagnosis and treatment, antibiotic drug development, epitope mapping, production of antibodies, and vaccine design. The use of synthetic peptides approved by the health authorities for vaccine, for cancer, and in drug delivery systems is increasing with these developments. The aim of this book chapter is to review the recent developments in the use of peptides in the diagnosis of drug and vaccine systems and to present them to the reader with commercially available illustrations

    Selenium in the Prevention of Anthracycline-Induced Cardiac Toxicity in Children with Cancer

    High cumulative doses of anthracyclines (300–500 mg/m2) used in the treatment of children with cancer may result in cardiotoxicity, a major long-term adverse effect that limits clinical usefulness of this class of chemotherapeutic agents. We assessed anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity by measuring Pro-BNP levels and echocardiographic (ECHO) findings and investigated potential protective effect of selenium (Se) supplementation in a group of pediatric cancer patients. Plasma level of Pro-BNP was measured, and ECHO was performed in 67 patients (45 boys, 22 girls; ages 2–18 years; median age 12 years) after they completed anthracycline-containing chemotherapy. Serum Se level was measured in 37 patients. Eleven patients had high Pro-BNP levels and/or cardiac failure with Pro-BNP levels of 10–8,022 pg/mL (median 226.3 pg/mL; laboratory normal level is less than 120 pg/mL). Serum Se levels were low (20–129 mcg/L, median 62 mcg/L) in ten of these eleven patients. Eight of 10 patients with low Se and high Pro-BNP levels were supplemented with Se 100 mcg/day for a period of 4–33 months (median 6 months) which resulted in improvement in Pro-BNP and/or ECHO findings. These results suggest that Se supplementation may have a role in protection against anthracycline-induced cardiac toxicity

    It is very crucial to determine Tg accurately and precisely in thyroid cancer cases. Although there are many studies on the detection of Tg in thyroid cases in the literature, there are no sufficient clinical studies examining many cases with different features by using RIA methodology. Here, a radiometric and chromatographic method has been studied for the first time to eliminate the interference from anti-Tg positive patients. In this paper, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunoradiometric (IRMA) techniques were used for the analysis of 302 sera collected from patients for Tg and TgAb quantification. By the RIA technique, a reliable result was obtained by calculating the real Tg value quantitatively in 41 patients showing TgAb positivity out of 208 patients. Our findings show that the RIA assay is the most suitable approach for detection of changeable (low or undetectable) Tg value and metastases detected by post-therapeutic imaging in early-stage DTC cases showing preoperative and postoperative TgAb positivity. The new immunoradiometric method allows the real (%) Tg value to be reached in a part of TgAb-positive DTC. Even if TgAb positive in the metastatic and nonmetastatic DTC patient group.     Totally Curative Surgical Resection of Retrorectal Tumors

    WOS: 000375348200012PubMed ID: 26897938Background/Aims: Retrorectal (also known as presacral) tumor (RT) is a rare disease of retrorectal space. There is no large numbered case series in the literature. Well documented small numbered case series will help to establish meta-analysis and surgical decision making. Methodology: Between 2000 and 2014 medical records of patients with diagnosis of RT at two institutions were reviewed. Clinical features, diagnostic studies, type of surgery, surgical findings, surgical technique, and histopathology of the tumor, morbidity and survival are examined based on data registry. Results: During 14 years period of time, total of 12 patients operated with diagnosis of RT were retrieved to this study. There were five men and seven women. The median age at the time of diagnosis was 43 (27-56) years. The most frequent findings were pain and palpable mass. There were five anterior, four posterior and three anteroposterior approaches for surgery. There is no recurrence or disease related mortality observed after median of 7 years (1-14). Conclusion: The primary and only satisfactory treatment is surgery for RTs. Prognosis is directly related primary local control with complete excision, which is often difficult to achieve for malignant lesions

    Influence of platelet count, platelet mass index, and platelet function on the spontaneous closure of ductus arteriosus in the prematurity

    Background: This study aims at evaluating the influence of platelet count, platelet mass index, and platelet function on the spontaneous closure of ductus arteriosus in prematurity. Methods: All preterm babies were divided into two groups, including Group 1 with “open PDA” and Group 2 with “closed PDA”. The variables of platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet mass index, and platelet function were analyzed and compared between two groups of patients to identify the factors that significantly influenced spontaneous closure of ductus arteriosus. Results: Twenty-four patients were in the “open PDA” group, whereas 36 patients were in the “closed PDA” group. Mean GA and BW were 27.6 ± 1.8 (23.1–30.4) and 28 ± 1.6 (23.4–30.6) weeks and 1009 ± 270 (585–1480) g and 1035 ± 298 (505–1500) g in “open PDA” and “closed PDA” groups, respectively (p > 0.05). The incidence of “Collagen-ADP > 130 s” was significantly higher in the “open PDA” group, and the levels of hemoglobin and hematocrit were significantly lower in the “open PDA” group (p  130 s (OR: 5.7 CI: 1.55–21.3) are two independent factors associated with ductal patency. Conclusion: This is the first study in the English literature providing evidence of the influence of platelet dysfunction on the spontaneous closure of ductus arteriosus in prematurity. Longer collagen-ADP duration is identified as a risk factor of ductal closure
