    Distal Intestinal Caecum of Farmed African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822): A Case Report

    The microanatomical characteristics of the distal intestinal caecum were investigated. The histology was typical of tubular organs containing tunicamucosa, submucosa, muscularis and adventitia. The lumen was lined by simple mucosal folds. The covering epithelium was of simple columnar cells containing goblet cells and intraepithelial lymphocytes. The lamina propria contained blood vessels, loose connective tissue and leukocytes.The muscularis mucosae of smooth muscle cells were observed. The submucosa contained loose connective tissue, smooth muscle cells, bloodvessels and leukocytes. The tunica muscularis contained a myenteric plexus between the inner circular and outer longitudinal layers of smoothmuscle cells. The mucin histochemistry revealed that the goblet cells present contained neutral and acid mucin but acid mucin predominated suggesting an organ with more need for protection against bacteria in the blind ended tube. When compared with the histology of the intestinal segments cranial and caudal to the diverticulum, the features of thecaecum were very similar to the segment cranial to it necessitating the conclusion that the diverticulum is the distal intestinal caecum. The histology suggests an organ serving as complementary digestivestructure to distal intestine in nutrient absorption without increasing the space occupied by the digestive tract.KEYWORDS: DISTAL, INTESTINAL, CAECUM, FARMED, AFRICAN, CATFISH, CASE REPOR

    Structure and functional significance of branched anastomosing mucosal folds in the proximal intestine of the farmed African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822)

    Histology has provided morphologist a powerful tool that enhances the nature, form and detailed structure of organs. The proximal intestine though a more muscular tube than the rest of the intestine presented a complex anastomosing mucosal fold resembling a honey comb-like structure. This specialization was not seen in the other intestinal segments. This specialization increases the surface area for nutrient absorption. This probably compensates for shortness of intestine and absence of pyloric caeca in this species. The glycoconjugates in the goblet cell of proximal intestine mucosal fold were subjected to mucin  histochemical study. The study revealed the presence of neutral andacid mucin but acid mucin was predominant. The neutral mucin can be associated to buffering the effect of gastric acid, transport of small disaccharide molecules. The predominating acid mucin suggest air-breathing function since the acid will always make the epithelium moist for gaseous exchange between dissolved air in   swallowed water and abundant blood vessels present in the tunica mucosa.Keywords: Nutrient absorption, Proximal intestine, Anastomosing mucosal folds, Histology, Histochemistry, Clarias gariepinu

    Monte Carlo Comparisons to a Cryogenic Dark Matter Search Detector with low Transition-Edge-Sensor Transition Temperature

    We present results on phonon quasidiffusion and Transition Edge Sensor (TES) studies in a large, 3 inch diameter, 1 inch thick [100] high purity germanium crystal, cooled to 50 mK in the vacuum of a dilution refrigerator, and exposed with 59.5 keV gamma-rays from an Am-241 calibration source. We compare calibration data with results from a Monte Carlo which includes phonon quasidiffusion and the generation of phonons created by charge carriers as they are drifted across the detector by ionization readout channels. The phonon energy is then parsed into TES based phonon readout channels and input into a TES simulator

    Implementation of Family Life and HIV/AIDS Education in Nigerian Schools: A Qualitative Study on Scope, Delivery and Challenges

    This study utilized data from Focus Group Discussions and In-depth Interviews among secondary school students and teachers to examine the scope, delivery and challenges of FLHE implementation within states and across geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Structural Functionalism, Rational Choice and Differential Association theories were adopted as theoretical framework. Results show that several patterns in classroom teaching of FLHE are identifiable across the country. The study found that FLHE is taught at the Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary levels with variations among States on the beginning levels. The main mode of FLHE delivery is classroom instruction; other modes include assembly talk and sensitization by organizations. Despite paucity of Information, Education and Communication materials and inadequate personnel requirement, different stakeholders noted that FLHE has been beneficial to students. Therefore, effective implementation of FLHE will go a long way to ensuring that young people in Nigeria are equipped with necessary information to enable them exhibit the right attitude and behaviour towards sexuality issues. Keywords: FLHE implementation, reproductive health, young people, youth corpers, sexual attitude.RĂ©sumĂ©Cette Ă©tude a utilisĂ© des donnĂ©es provenant des groupes de discussion Ă  cible et des entrevues en profondeur entre Ă©lĂšves et enseignants des Ă©coles secondaires afin d'examiner la portĂ©e, l’actualisation et la mise en oeuvre de dĂ©fis de la VFES au sein des Etats et entre les zones gĂ©opolitiques au Nigeria.     Comparative analysis of municipal solid waste (MSW) composition in three local government areas in Rivers State, Nigeria

    Rivers State is one of the major oil producing States in Nigeria. Its capital, Port Harcourt and sub-urban areas have witnessed an increased influx of migrants in recent time. Consequently, the consumption of goods and services has also increased leading to generation of unprecedented quantities of municipal solid waste. Previous efforts by relevant authorities to contain this increase in waste generation have proved abortive due largely to among other reasons, inappropriate and unsustainable municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems. The first step in a sustainable MSW management is to understand the types, composition and variation that exist in the waste generated in time and space. Previous reports have been concentrated on the characteristics of waste in Port Harcourt. This present work evaluated solid waste composition in three LGAs in Rivers State with a view of an integrated approach in MSW management in the State. Waste characteristics varied with the different locations studied. Generation rate was 0.45, 0.98 and 1.16 kg/capita/day for Emougha, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt, respectively. Most prominent categories were organic waste, paper and nylon. Mean percentage composition was 65, 65.5 and 59% for organic waste, 13, 11 and 6% for paper and 12, 16 and 14% for nylon in Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor and Emougha LGAs, respectively. It is believed that given the characteristics of these waste streams, a sustainable management strategy could have several benefits including resources recovery and energy generation.Key words: Municipal solid waste (MSW), characterization, Rivers State, integrated MSW management

    Three Gravitational Lenses for the Price of One: Enhanced Strong Lensing through Galaxy Clustering

    We report the serendipitous discovery of two strong gravitational lens candidates (ACS J160919+6532 and ACS J160910+6532) in deep images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope, each less than 40 arcsec from the previously known gravitational lens system CLASS B1608+656. The redshifts of both lens galaxies have been measured with Keck and Gemini: one is a member of a small galaxy group at z~0.63, which also includes the lensing galaxy in the B1608+656 system, and the second is a member of a foreground group at z~0.43. By measuring the effective radii and surface brightnesses of the two lens galaxies, we infer their velocity dispersions based on the passively evolving Fundamental Plane (FP) relation. Elliptical isothermal lens mass models are able to explain their image configurations within the lens hypothesis, with a velocity dispersion compatible with that estimated from the FP for a reasonable source-redshift range. Based on the large number of massive early-type galaxies in the field and the number-density of faint blue galaxies, the presence of two additional lens systems around CLASS B1608+656 is not unlikely in hindsight. Gravitational lens galaxies are predominantly early-type galaxies, which are clustered, and the lensed quasar host galaxies are also clustered. Therefore, obtaining deep high-resolution images of the fields around known strong lens systems is an excellent method of enhancing the probability of finding additional strong gravitational lens systems.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 8 pages, 6 figure

    On the influence of the cosmological constant on gravitational lensing in small systems

    The cosmological constant Lambda affects gravitational lensing phenomena. The contribution of Lambda to the observable angular positions of multiple images and to their amplification and time delay is here computed through a study in the weak deflection limit of the equations of motion in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric. Due to Lambda the unresolved images are slightly demagnified, the radius of the Einstein ring decreases and the time delay increases. The effect is however negligible for near lenses.     Orbital Kondo effect in carbon nanotubes

    Progress in the fabrication of nanometer-scale electronic devices is opening new opportunities to uncover the deepest aspects of the Kondo effect, one of the paradigmatic phenomena in the physics of strongly correlated electrons. Artificial single-impurity Kondo systems have been realized in various nanostructures, including semiconductor quantum dots, carbon nanotubes and individual molecules. The Kondo effect is usually regarded as a spin-related phenomenon, namely the coherent exchange of the spin between a localized state and a Fermi sea of electrons. In principle, however, the role of the spin could be replaced by other degrees of freedom, such as an orbital quantum number. Here we demonstrate that the unique electronic structure of carbon nanotubes enables the observation of a purely orbital Kondo effect. We use a magnetic field to tune spin-polarized states into orbital degeneracy and conclude that the orbital quantum number is conserved during tunneling. When orbital and spin degeneracies are simultaneously present, we observe a strongly enhanced Kondo effect, with a multiple splitting of the Kondo resonance at finite field and predicted to obey a so-called SU(4) symmetry.Comment: 26 pages, including 4+2 figure

    Post-infection immunocomplex glomerulonephritis and Legionnaires' disease in a patient with adult Still's disease during treatment with interleukin 1 receptor antagonist anakinra: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Legionellosis is a systemic disease that primarily affects the lungs. However, dysfunction in many organ systems, including the kidneys, has also been described. There are only a few reported cases of renal dysfunction in patients with legionellosis.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 27-year-old Caucasian woman with known adult Still's disease was admitted to our hospital for community-acquired pneumonia, due to <it>Legionella </it>infection, with acute renal failure. Although her respiratory symptoms responded well to antibiotic treatment, her renal function worsened, with severe proteinuria and edema. A renal biopsy showed extracapillary and endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis with accompanying chronic and acute interstitial nephritis. This was consistent with a post-infection immunocomplex glomerulonephritis. After initiation of steroid therapy, her renal function improved. Additionally, therapy with diuretics and an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor was initiated because of persistent proteinuria. Under this treatment regimen, her severe edema and proteinuria disappeared.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, there is only a handful of reported cases of post-infection glomerulonephritis with a nephrotic syndrome in a patient with legionellosis. Our findings suggest that, in patients with Legionnaires' disease with renal failure, post-infection immunocomplex glomerulonephritis should be considered and steroid therapy may be an effective modality to treat the renal complication.</p
