This is the accepted version of the manuscript.The urbanization of North American Mennonites after the Second World War necessitated a reconsideration of Mennonite religious beliefs. Post-war concerns for social justice led to a greater emphasis on non-violence and agape at the expense of Gelassenheit. The tenor of Mennonite church conference resolutions regarding labour union membership changed; while skepticism remained regarding the wisdom of union involvement, the door was left open for participation in unions. The labour militancy of the 1970s led Manitoba Mennonites to re-examine their engagement with the labour movement, a process that has continued to the present day. Genomic investigations of unexplained acute hepatitis in children

Since its first identification in Scotland, over 1,000 cases of unexplained paediatric hepatitis in children have been reported worldwide, including 278 cases in the UK1. Here we report an investigation of 38 cases, 66 age-matched immunocompetent controls and 21 immunocompromised comparator participants, using a combination of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and immunohistochemical methods. We detected high levels of adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) DNA in the liver, blood, plasma or stool from 27 of 28 cases. We found low levels of adenovirus (HAdV) and human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) in 23 of 31 and 16 of 23, respectively, of the cases tested. By contrast, AAV2 was infrequently detected and at low titre in the blood or the liver from control children with HAdV, even when profoundly immunosuppressed. AAV2, HAdV and HHV-6 phylogeny excluded the emergence of novel strains in cases. Histological analyses of explanted livers showed enrichment for T cells and B lineage cells. Proteomic comparison of liver tissue from cases and healthy controls identified increased expression of HLA class 2, immunoglobulin variable regions and complement proteins. HAdV and AAV2 proteins were not detected in the livers. Instead, we identified AAV2 DNA complexes reflecting both HAdV-mediated and HHV-6B-mediated replication. We hypothesize that high levels of abnormal AAV2 replication products aided by HAdV and, in severe cases, HHV-6B may have triggered immune-mediated hepatic disease in genetically and immunologically predisposed children

Thermoplasmonic maskless lithography on upconverting nanocomposites assisted by gold nanostars

FAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOPhotothermal effects in plasmonic nanoparticles can be used to locally modify temperature-sensitive materials. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic biodegradable polymer with a glass transition temperature around 60 degrees C that has been popularized as a feedstock material for 3D printing. Here, we extend its use to produce thin PLA films that can be modified at the microscopic level when covered with gold nanostars (AuNSs). The heat dissipation generated when exciting the plasmon resonance of AuNSs, under exposure to 976 nm focused laser light, produces an increase in the local temperature of more than 100 degrees C. When the temperature surpasses the glass transition of the base PLA layer, AuNSs get attached to the polymer surface. The following dissolution of the unexposed material in acetone bath permits the precise control of the engraving process at the microscale. Furthermore, Er3+ doped upconverting nanoparticles embedded into the PLA layer can act as optical nanothermometers to probe the local temperature, simultaneously allowing the visualization of the laser spot. A computer numerical control (CNC) system was developed to drive the laser writing beam and transfer 2D patterns, opening up the thermoplasmonic maskless lithography technique. CHARACTERISTICS OF INJURIES PRESENTING TO A RURAL HEALTH CENTRE IN WESTERN KENYA

ABSTRACTObjectives: To describe characteristics of injuries among patients presenting to a rural healthcentre in western Kenya, and identify the associated risk factors.Design: A retrospective descriptive study.Setting: A primary care Ministry of Health Rural Health Centre in western Kenya.Results: Of the 315 injured patients, 62% were males and 38% females. Young adults aged 15-44 yearswere the most affected, comprising 63.5%. The five most common causes of injury were struck byobject (36.6%), assault (34.4%), falls (11.6%), burns (6.2%) and road traffic accidents (4.7%). Quarrelsand fights were the leading reasons for assaults among males (69.5%) and females (44.4%). Mostinjuries occurred at work (36.2%), when subjects were engaged in vital activities (19.5%) or duringplay/leisure time (19.2%). A third of injured adults aged 15 years and above had consumed alcoholprior to the injury event. Alcohol use was significantly associated with assaults (51.3%) than allother causes of injury (OR=4.51, p<0.0001).Conclusion: The pattern and certain risk factors for non-fatal injuries among patients attending arural health centre, such as place of occurrence, activity and alcohol use, can be identified througha facility-based electronic injury surveillance system. Modellhafte Beschreibung verkehrsbedingter Emissions- und Immissionssituationen bei Suburbanisierungsprozessen und Auswirkungen auf die Belastung staedtischer Gruen- und Freiflaechen

Traffic emissions were recorded and mapped in the vicinity of selected shopping centers (Wachau Nord, Burghausen and Paunsdorf-Center), and pollutant dispersion models were established on this basis that describe the pollutant load on the main supply roads but especially on urban recreational surfaces. In the final stage, models will be developed from which recommendations can be derived for emission reduction in urban planning, e.g. by means of decentralized shopping centers serving only a single town districtDas Vorhaben hat die Aufgabe, einen Teilaspekt der Wirkungskette 'Verkehr -Emissionen - Immissionen' modellhaft zu bearbeiten. Dabei soll besonders die zusaetzliche Verkehrsentstehung an ausgewaehlten Einkaufszentren (Globus SB Warenhaus im Gewerbegebiet Wachau Nord (im folgenden Globus-Markt genannt), Loewen-Center Burghausen und Paunsdorf-Center) am Stadtrand bzw. im suburbanen Raum untersucht und zugleich die Beeinflussung innerstaedtischer Gruenflaechen durch den Verkehr ausgewiesen werden. Erfasst und modelliert werden die Einzugsgebiete der genannten Einkaufszentren, daraus abgeleitet das Netz der Zufahrtsstrecken und die Emissionsverteilung in diesem Netz. Auf dieser Basis sind Schadstoffausbreitungsmodelle vorgesehen, die die Immissionsbelastung auf den Hauptzufahrtsstrecken beschreiben, insbesondere aber den verkehrsbedingten Schadstoffeintrag in innerstaedtische Gruen- und andere Erholungs- und Freiflaechen nachweisen.
