The fishfauna of Gokceada Island, NE Aegean Sea, Turkey

    No full text
The Turkish Island of Gokceada is located in the northeastern Aegean Sea. In this preliminary study, six collecting stations, at depths 5-15 were sampled. A total of 76 species were collected by trammel and gill nets (59 species) or by trawls (17 species). lit each station and during each season the Shannon-Weaver Diversity index and Simpson Dominance index were calculated. These indices were compared with their mean values for each station. The similarity among the stations was estimated Sorenson's (1948) formula. Similarity index, stations I and III showed the highest similarity (80%), and stations IV-VI (44%) and V-VI (45%) showed the lowest similarity

A comparative study of health related quality of life, psychological well-being, impact of illness and stigma in epilepsy and migraine

This study aimed to show the difference of epilepsy from another chronic neurological disorder with episodic manifestations (CDEM): migraine. Seventy persons with epilepsy (PWE), 56 persons with migraine (PWM) and 45 healthy control participants (HCs) were included. The groups were compared in terms of demographics, quality of life, depression and self-esteem. The PWE and PWM were also compared with regard to stigma, impact of the illness, disclosure, application of spiritual/traditional healing methods, limitations, most affected life areas, and restrictions. Results showed that the PWM had lower quality of life values than the PWE and the HCs, while there was no difference among the groups in depression and self-esteem. Results also show higher unemployment levels and lower marriage rates for the PWE, where education levels were equal. Although the PWM had higher impact of illness values, the PWE were shown to have higher stigma, more concealment behavior, and higher traditional/spiritual healing application ratios. Also, the PWM emphasized the importance of being "able to fulfil daily living, social and work activities", while the PWE emphasized the need for "independence" constantly. These results indicate that, although both migraine and epilepsy are CDEMs, they have different levels of impact on patients' lives. The impacts are socially greater in epilepsy and extend beyond the neurological condition itself. (C) 2011 British Epilepsy Association. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

A New Record for Occurrence of Symphodus bailloni (Osteichthyes: Perciformes: Labridae) in the Western Black Sea Coast of Turkey

    No full text
The fish species Symphodus bailloni (Valenciennes, 1839) reported in the present study were collected between June 2010 and June 2011 from the western Black Sea coasts which were previously not recorded from the Black Sea coast of Turkey. A total of 717 specimens of S. bailloni were measured, ranging between 8.9 and 15.4 cm TL. Morphometrics, meristics, and diagnostic characteristics of the species are presented

CALLUS INDUCTION, PLANT-REGENERATION AND CHROMOSOMAL VARIATIONS IN BARLEY

Callus cultures were induced on mature embryo mesocotyl explants in Hordeum vulgare cv. Zafer-160. The callus induction ratio was 54% in Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1 mg 1(-1) 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). After transfer at 22, 45, 360, 540 days of culture to MS medium containing lower concentrations of 2,4-D (0.5, 0.1, 0.01 mg 1(-1)) or MS medium lacking 2,4-D, 45-day-old callus cultures showed somatic embryogenesis. The optimum 2,4-D concentration for somatic embryogenesis was 0.01 mg 1(-1). Callus cultures of 360 days showed regeneration via both somatic embryogenesis and organogenesis under the same conditions. Abnormalities in both number and structure of chromosomes increased with the age of calli. This phenomenon might be related to the loss of regeneration ability in 540-day-old calli. In-vitro regenerated plantlets gave rise to normal-looking plants after their transfer to soil. Regenerated plants had the normal diploid chromosome number (2n = 14) in their root tips

Performance of tuberculin skin test and interferon gamma assay for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in juvenile idiopathic arthritis

The objective of this prospective cross-sectional study was to compare a Mycobacterium tuberculosis-specific interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) enzyme linked immunosorbent assay [QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT)] test with tuberculin skin test (TST) for detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). To our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating the performance of QFT-GIT in comparison with TST in JIA. A cross-sectional study of 39 children with JIA and 40 healthy controls was conducted in A degrees zmir, Turkey. Blood was for drawn for the QFT-GIT assay prior to administration of the TST using 5 tubercullin units (TU) of purified protein derivative (PPD-S). A positive TST was defined as a parts per thousand yen10 mm for JIA and a parts per thousand yen15 mm for controls. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 16.0 for Windows. There were no significant differences between JIA patients and controls for age, sex, and Bacillus Calmette-Gu,rin (BCG) vaccination. Of patients, 70% had active JIA disease. The median TST induration was 5.8 mm (+/- 5.7 mm) for JIA and 10.7 mm (+/- 4.5 mm) for the control group, which was statistically significant (p = 0.000). The rate of patients who showed no reaction to TST was 38%, of which 93% had active disease. There were two patients who had positive IFN-gamma results but negative TST, who had systemic and polyarticular type JIA, respectively. Overall agreement between TST and QFT-GIT was low both in JIA and control group (kappa value =0.06 and 0.10, respectively). TST may be inadequate to diagnose LTBI in JIA patients. The IFN-gamma assay may be useful to identify false negative TST response in cases with latent M. tuberculosis infection. The combination of IF QFT-GIT method with TST would provide successful diagnostic screening for LTBI in JIA, particularly prior to anti-tumor necrosis factor treatment. Long-term prospective studies are still necessary to appreciate the advantages and the applicability of these tests in pediatrics
