    Reduction of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) luxation in a horse - case report

    ABSTRACT Luxation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in horses, despite being an uncommon condition, is often associated with local trauma involving the head. Its clinical importance is mainly related to the painful injury and impairment of the multiple movements involved in chewing and breaking foods. The objective of the current work is to describe the manual reduction technique of TMJ dislocation in a 6-year-old Mangalarga Marchador stallion with a history of inability to close the oral cavity and lateral displacement of the mandible. In the radiographic and ultrasonographic evaluation of the region a rostral displacement of the mandibular condyle was observed. Manual reduction was effective with the patient under dissociative anesthesia, progressing to medical discharge within 12 days

    Foi realizado levantamento quantiqualitativo de vegetais de porte arbóreo em dois bairros paulistanos, Vila Vera e Jardim da Saúde, situados na região Sudeste de São Paulo, não distando muito entre si, porém com características de ocupação de uso do solo bastante distintas. No Jardim da Saúde, encontraram-se 1.033 exemplares de 72 espécies botânicas, cuja altura média de todas as árvores foi de 8,07 m. A Caesalpinea peltophoroides Benth. foi a espécie mais frequente, com 20,68%, seguida da Largestroemia indica L., com 7,48%. Predominavam árvores com mais de 8,50 m de altura, sendo o pior indicador de sanidade vegetal a infestação de cupins, com 8,33% do total. Apenas 23,33% tinham situações de permeabilidade do passeio suficiente, e 5,71% delas se encontravam com conduções de podas para desobstrução das redes aéreas; o rebaixamento das árvores aconteceu em 7,74% dos exemplares. Na Vila Vera havia 178 árvores pertencentes a 42 espécies botânicas, sendo a média da altura total de 6,31 m. A espécie mais abundante foi a Caesalpinea peltophoroides Benth., com 24,71%; a segunda seria a Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton, com 17,24% do total. Em 42,70% das árvores, a altura foi inferior a 4,50 m, e a sanidade vegetal estava comprometida em 12,37% dos exemplares pela infestação de cupins. Somente 7,87% dos exemplares estavam em situações de permeabilidade suficiente, as conduções de poda para desobstrução de redes eram de 3,38% e as podas de rebaixamento, de 13,48%. Havia uma média de 16,85 m de afastamento entre árvores no Jardim da Saúde, enquanto na Vila Vera esse indicativo era de 38,68 m.<br>An arboreal qualitative and quantitative study was conducted in two closely located neighborhoods (Vila Vera and Jardim da Saúde) in the southeast region of São Paulo. In spite of geographical vicinity, both neighborhoods have very different land occupation characteristics. In Jardim da Saúde we found 1033 tree specimens, belonging to 72 distinct botanic species, with an average height of 8.07m. Caesalpinea peltophoroides Benth. was the most frequent species found (20,68% of the trees), followed by Largestroemia indica L. (with 7.48%) Most trees have a height of 8.50 m and above. The worst health threat was termite infestation which affected 8.33% of the specimens. Only 23.33% of the trees were planted in an area which enough surface permeability. 5.71% of the specimens had been pruned to prevent interference with electrical lines and crown-reducing pruning had been done in 7.74% of the trees. In Vila Vera we found limited space conditions in regards to the width of the sidewalk and also in regards to the predominant type of site utilization. We counted 178 trees belonging to 42 distinct botanic species, with average height of 6.31m. The most common species is Caesalpinea peltophoroides Benth. (which accounted for 24.71% of the specimens), followed by a Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton (with 17.24%). In this neighborhood 42.70% of the trees had a height of less than 4.5m, 12.37% were in poor health due to termite infestation. Only 7.87% of the specimens where planted in an area which enough surface permeability, while 16.85% where located in totally paved areas. 3.38% had been pruned to avoid interference with electrical lines and 13.48% had been crown-reducing pruned. In Jardim da Saúde the average distance between trees was 16.85m, while in Vila Vera it was 38.68m. In other words, the average distance between trees is about 2.29 greater in Vila Vera than in Jardim da Saúde

    Fontes e doses de boro em porta-enxertos de seringueira Sources and rates of boron in rubber rootstocks

    Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito da aplicação de boro sobre o incremento do diâmetro do caule no ponto de enxertia, 5 cm acima do coleto, número e diâmetro de raízes laterais e estado nutricional de porta-enxertos para produção de toco enxertado de raiz nua. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2x5: duas fontes (ulexita, 10% de B e ácido bórico, 17% de B) e cinco doses de B (0, 2, 4, 8 e 16 kg ha-1) com quatro repetições. Em condições edafoclimáticas locais, curvas de resposta indicam aumentos significativos, no incremento do diâmetro do caule, no ponto de enxertia, nas doses 6,5 e 16 kg ha-1 de B, e no número de raízes laterais, nas doses 13,9 e 16 kg ha-1 de B, com aplicação de ácido bórico e de ulexita, respectivamente. As doses de B não afetaram o número de raízes. O nível crítico de B na folha de mudas de seringueira, alcançado com aplicação de ácido bórico, é de 31,8 mg kg-1. As doses de B apresentam interações significativas com os teores foliares de B, Mn e Zn, enquanto os teores foliares de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Na, Cu e Fe não variaram significativamente em razão das doses de B.<br>The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of boron supply on the increment of stem diameter, number and diameter of lateral roots and the nutritional status of rubber rootstocks at the budding height (5 cm above the root collar), for the production of base root budded stumps, in a Xanthic Ferralsol. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 2x5 factorial scheme: two sources (ulexite - 10% of B and boric acid - 17% of B) and five B rates (0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 kg ha-1), with four replicates. Under the local conditions, the response curves showed significant increases in increment of stem diameter at 6.5 and 16 kg ha-1 B, and in the number of lateral roots at 13.9 and 16 kg ha-1 B, with boric acid and ulexite, respectively. The B rate did not improve the number of lateral of roots. The critical level of boron in leaf of rubber rootstocks obtained with boric acid is 31.8 mg kg-1. The B rates supply presented significant interactions with the leaf contents of B, Mn and Zn, while leaf contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Na, Cu and Fe did not vary in function of B rates

    Protein co-products and by-products of the biodiesel industry for ruminants feeding

    The objective of the experiment was to classify 20 protein co-products and by-products of the biodiesel industry with potential to use in ruminant feeding. The meals evaluated were: cottonseed, canudo-de-pito, crambe, sunflower, castor-oil seeds detoxified with calcium, non-detoxified castor-oil seeds and soybean; and the cakes were: cottonseed, peanut, babassu, crambe, palm oil, sunflower, licuri, macauba seeds, non-detoxified castor-oil seeds, turnip and jatropha. The samples were quantified to determine dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap), non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC), acid detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (ADFap), lignin, cutin and starch levels. The CP profile was characterized in fractions A, B1, B2, B3 and C. The in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility (IVNDFD), rumen degradable and undegradable protein, intestinal digestibility, indigestible neutral detergent fiber and undegradable neutral detergent insoluble protein were evaluated. The OM, CP, EE, NDFap, NFC, ADFap, lignin, cutin and starch contents varied from 81.95 to 95.41%, 18.92 to 57.75%, 0.56 to 18.40%, 10.13 to 62.30%, 3.89 to 27.88%, 6.15 to 36.86%, 1.19 to 5.04%, 0 to 17.87% and 0.68 to 14.50%, respectively. The values of fractions A, B1, B2, B3 and C ranged from 5.40 to 43.31%, 0.08 to 37.63%, 16.75 to 79.39%, 1.86 to 59.15% and 0.60 to 11.47%, respectively. Concentrations of IVDMD, IVNDFD, rumen-degradable and undegradable protein, intestinal digestibility, indigestible NDF and undegradable neutral detergent insoluble protein ranged from 31.00 to 95.92%, 55.04 to 97.74%, 41.06 to 97.61%, 2.39 to 58.94, 9.27 to 94.26%, 1.05 to 40.80% and 0.29 to 2.92%, respectively. Some of these products can replace soybean meal, specially the Macauba seeds cake, cottonseed meal and peanut and turnip cakes based on digestive characteristics
