    On the microscopic structure of liquid hydrogens

    Among the quantum liquids, the hydrogens cover an interesting position between liquid helium, where quantum exchange gives rise to the macroscopic phenomenon of superfluidity, and neon, where quantum effects are relatively small, so that its features can be evaluated by perturbation methods with reference to a classical system. Nonetheless, the experimental access to the microscopic structure of the hydrogens is not an easy task both because of their intra-molecular structure and the small molecular mass that is comparable with that of the neutron probe. In this paper we discuss the state of the art and summarise the available experimental information on the microscopic structure of the hydrogens. The experimental data for the two systems are compared among them and with the results of quantum Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that similar quantities, measured in corresponding thermodynamic points, are rather different for the two systems due to the different weight of quantum effects. Moreover, the comparison with the simulation results shows that, for deuterium, there is a substantial agreement, both at the level of the structure factor and its thermodynamic derivatives. The agreement is less satisfactory for liquid hydrogen.Серед квантових рідин водень займає цікаве місце між рідким гелієм, для якого квантовий обмін приводить до макроскопічного явища надплинності, і неоном, для якого квантові ефекти відносно малі, так що його властивості можуть бути оцінені методами збурень відносно класичної системи. Тим не менше, експериментальний підхід до мікроскопічної структури водню не є легким завданням як через його внутрішню молекулярну структуру, так і через малу молекулярну масу, що співмірна з масою нейтронів. У цій статті ми обговорюємо стан справ і підсумовуємо наявну експериментальну інформацію про мікроскопічну структуру водню. Експериментальні дані для двох систем порівнюються між собою і з результатами розрахунку інтегралів за траєкторіями методом Монте Карло. Знайдено, що подібні величини, виміряні у відповідних термодинамічних точках, є швидше відмінні для двох систем завдяки різним вкладам квантових ефектів. Більше того, порівняння з результатами моделювання показують, що для дейтерію спостерігаються суттєві узгодження як на рівні структурного фактора, так і його термодинамічних похідних. Узгодження є менш задовільним для рідкого водню

    New radiocarbon measurements from Tasmanian Huon pine: closing the current gap in tree-ring based calibration data for the early Younger Dryas.

    The European absolute tree-ring chronologies have recently extended back to 12,594 cal BP [1], covering most of the Younger Dryas (YD). Radiocarbon data from these chronologies spanning the past 12,400 cal BP have been used to construct the younger part of the current internationally ratified calibration curve IntCal04 [2]. For the Late Glacial, radiocarbon data from a floating 1382-ring pine chronology are also available [3]. Here we present new high-precision, high-resolution radiocarbon measurements for the early YD chronozone derived from 4 sub-fossil logs of Huon pine with clearly defined annual tree rings. These logs were excavated from alluvial sediments along Stanley River in north-western Tasmania, Australia. A total of 137 samples, mostly decadal, were pretreated to alpha-cellulose, then converted to graphite and measured by AMS using the ANTARES facility at ANSTO [4], with a typical precision of 0.3-0.4%. A floating 617-ring Huon pine chronology has been constructed based on ring width and radiocarbon measurements. Our high-precision decadal 14C record, covering an age range from 10,350 to 10,760 14C years BP, has been linked to the European absolute tree-ring and floating Late Glacial Pine chronologies, bridging the current gap in the European tree-ring chronologies during the early YD and making a continuous and reliable atmospheric 14C record for the past 14,000 cal BP.     Electrical, morphological and structural properties of RF magnetron sputtered Mo thin films for application in thin film photovoltaic solar cells

    Molybdenum (Mo) thin films were deposited using radio frequency magnetron sputtering, for application as a metal back contact material in ‘‘substrate configuration’’ thin film solar cells. The variations of the electrical, morphological, and structural properties of the deposited films with sputtering pressure, sputtering power and post-deposition annealing were determined. The electrical conductivity of the Mo films was found to increase with decreasing sputtering pressure and increasing sputtering power. X-ray diffraction data showed that all the films had a (110) preferred orientation that became less pronounced at higher sputtering power while being relatively insensitive to process pressure. The lattice stress within the films changed from tensile to compressive with increasing sputtering power and the tensile stress increased with increasing sputtering pressure. The surface morphology of the films changed from pyramids to cigar-shaped grains for a sputtering power between 100 and 200 W, remaining largely unchanged at higher power. These grains were also observed to decrease in size with increasing sputtering pressure. Annealing the films was found to affect the resistivity and stress of the films. The resistivity increased due to the presence of residual oxygen and the stress changed from tensile to compressive. The annealing step was not found to affect the crystallisation and grain growth of the Mo films

    Vitamin C and E Supplementation Effects in Professional Soccer Players Under Regular Training

    Exercise training is known to induce an increase in free radical production potentially leading to enhanced muscle injury. Vitamins C and E are well known antioxidants that may prevent muscle cell damage. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of these supplemental antioxidant vitamins on markers of oxidative stress, muscle damage and performance of elite soccer players. Ten male young soccer players were divided into two groups. Supplementation group (n = 5) received vitamins C and E supplementation daily during the pre-competitive season (S group), while the placebo group (PL group, n = 5) received a pill containing maltodextrin. Both groups performed the same training load during the three-month pre-season training period. Erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes glutathione reductase, catalase and plasma carbonyl derivatives did not show any significant variation among the experimental groups. Similarly, fitness level markers did not differ among the experimental groups. However, S group demonstrated lower lipid peroxidation and muscle damage levels (p < 0.05) compared to PL group at the final phase of pre-competitive season. In conclusion, our data demonstrated that vitamin C and E supplementation in soccer players may reduce lipid peroxidation and muscle damage during high intensity efforts, but did not enhance performance

    NEOTROPICAL XENARTHRANS: a data set of occurrence of xenarthran species in the Neotropics

    Xenarthrans – anteaters, sloths, and armadillos – have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with 24 domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, ten anteaters, and six sloths. Our dataset includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data-paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the south of the USA, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to its austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n=5,941), and Cyclopes sp. has the fewest (n=240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n=11,588), and the least recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n=33). With regards to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n=962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n=12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other datasets of Neotropical Series which will become available very soon (i.e. Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans dataset
