Characterization of local structures with bond-order parameters and graphs of the nearest neighbors, a comparison
We compare two methods for the characterization of local order in samples undergoing crystal nucleation and growth. Particles with a crystal-like surrounding need to be identified to follow the nucleation process. Both methods are based on the knowledge of the particle positions in a small volume of the sample. (i) Local bond-order parameters are used to quantify the orientation of the nearest neighbors of a particle, while (ii) the graph method determines the topological arrangement of the nearest neighbors and the bonds between them. Both methods are used to detect crystal-like particles and crystal nuclei in a supercooled fluid surrounding and to determine the structure of small crystal nuclei. The properties of these nuclei are of great interest for a deeper understanding of crystal nucleation, and they can be studied in detail in colloidal model systems that allow to follow the evolution of the nuclei with single particle resolution

Observed and simulated precipitation responses in wet and dry regions 1850–2100
Global warming is expected to enhance fluxes of fresh water between the surface and atmosphere, causing wet regions to become wetter and dry regions drier, with serious implications for water resource management. Defining the wet and dry regions as the upper 30% and lower 70% of the precipitation totals across the tropics (30° S–30° N) each month we combine observations and climate model simulations to understand changes in the wet and dry regions over the period 1850–2100. Observed decreases in precipitation over dry tropical land (1950–2010) are also simulated by coupled atmosphere–ocean climate models (−0.3%/decade) with trends projected to continue into the 21st century. Discrepancies between observations and simulations over wet land regions since 1950 exist, relating to decadal fluctuations in El Niño southern oscillation, the timing of which is not represented by the coupled simulations. When atmosphere-only simulations are instead driven by observed sea surface temperature they are able to adequately represent this variability over land. Global distributions of precipitation trends are dominated by spatial changes in atmospheric circulation. However, the tendency for already wet regions to become wetter (precipitation increases with warming by 3% K−1 over wet tropical oceans) and the driest regions drier (precipitation decreases of −2% K−1 over dry tropical land regions) emerges over the 21st century in response to the substantial surface warming
Plasticity and memory effects in the vortex solid phase of twinned YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals
We report on marked memory effects in the vortex system of twinned YBa2Cu3O7
single crystals observed in ac susceptibility measurements. We show that the
vortex system can be trapped in different metastable states with variable
degree of order arising in response to different system histories. The pressure
exerted by the oscillating ac field assists the vortex system in ordering,
locally reducing the critical current density in the penetrated outer zone of
the sample. The robustness of the ordered and disordered states together with
the spatial profile of the critical current density lead to the observed memory
effects
Ferromagnetic/superconducting proximity effect in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 / YBa2Cu3O7 superlattices
We study the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in high
quality YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) / La0.7Ca0.3MnO3(LCMO)superlattices. We find evidence
for the YBCO superconductivity depression in presence of the LCMO layers. We
show that due to its short coherence length superconductivity survives in the
YBCO down to much smaller thickness in presence of the magnetic layer than in
low Tc superconductors. We also find that for a fixed thickness of the
superconducting layer, superconductivity is depressed over a thickness interval
of the magnetic layer in the 100 nm range. This is a much longer length scale
than that predicted by the theory of ferromagnetic/superconducting proximity
effect.Comment: 10 pages + 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Spatio-temporal dynamics and plastic flow of vortices in superconductors with periodic arrays of pinning sites
We present simulations of flux-gradient-driven superconducting rigid vortices
interacting with square and triangular arrays of columnar pinning sites in an
increasing external magnetic field. These simulations allow us to
quantitatively relate spatio-temporal microscopic information of the vortex
lattice with typically measured macroscopic quantities, such as the
magnetization . The flux lattice does not become completely commensurate
with the pinning sites throughout the sample at the magnetization matching
peaks, but forms a commensurate lattice in a region close to the edge of the
sample. Matching fields related to unstable vortex configurations do not
produce peaks in . We observe a variety of evolving complex flux
profiles, including flat terraces or plateaus separated by winding
current-carrying strings and, near the peaks in , plateaus only in
certain regions, which move through the sample as the field increases
Strain effect on electronic transport and ferromagnetic transition temperature in LaSrMnO thin films
We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties
and the ferromagnetic transition temperature of high-quality
LaSrMnO thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO
substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent
on the film thickness. is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness
due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity
above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small
polaronic hopping conductivity. The polaronic formation energy is
reduced with the decrease of film thickness. We found that the strain
dependence of mainly results from the strain-induced electron-phonon
coupling. The strain effect on is in good agreement with the
theoretical predictions.Comment: 6 pages and 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Nonquasiparticle states in half-metallic ferromagnets
Anomalous magnetic and electronic properties of the half-metallic
ferromagnets (HMF) have been discussed. The general conception of the HMF
electronic structure which take into account the most important correlation
effects from electron-magnon interactions, in particular, the spin-polaron
effects, is presented. Special attention is paid to the so called
non-quasiparticle (NQP) or incoherent states which are present in the gap near
the Fermi level and can give considerable contributions to thermodynamic and
transport properties. Prospects of experimental observation of the NQP states
in core-level spectroscopy is discussed. Special features of transport
properties of the HMF which are connected with the absence of one-magnon
spin-flip scattering processes are investigated. The temperature and magnetic
field dependences of resistivity in various regimes are calculated. It is shown
that the NQP states can give a dominate contribution to the temperature
dependence of the impurity-induced resistivity and in the tunnel junction
conductivity. First principle calculations of the NQP-states for the prototype
half-metallic material NiMnSb within the local-density approximation plus
dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT) are presented.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, Proceedings of Berlin/Wandlitz workshop 2004;

Effects of phone versus mail survey methods on the measurement of health-related quality of life and emotional and behavioural problems in adolescents

Abstract

Background

Telephone interviews have become established as an alternative to traditional mail surveys for collecting epidemiological data in public health research. However, the use of telephone and mail surveys raises the question of to what extent the results of different data collection methods deviate from one another. We therefore set out to study possible differences in using telephone and mail survey methods to measure health-related quality of life and emotional and behavioural problems in children and adolescents.

Methods

A total of 1700 German children aged 8-18 years and their parents were interviewed randomly either by telephone or by mail. Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and mental health problems (MHP) were assessed using the KINDL-R Quality of Life instrument and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) children's self-report and parent proxy report versions. Mean Differences ("d" effect size) and differences in Cronbach alpha were examined across modes of administration. Pearson correlation between children's and parents' scores was calculated within a multi-trait-multi-method (MTMM) analysis and compared across survey modes using Fisher-Z transformation.

Results

Telephone and mail survey methods resulted in similar completion rates and similar socio-demographic and socio-economic makeups of the samples. Telephone methods resulted in more positive self- and parent proxy reports of children's HRQoL (SMD ≤ 0.27) and MHP (SMD ≤ 0.32) on many scales. For the phone administered KINDL, lower Cronbach alpha values (self/proxy Total: 0.79/0.84) were observed (mail survey self/proxy Total: 0.84/0.87). KINDL MTMM results were weaker for the phone surveys: mono-trait-multi-method mean r = 0.31 (mail: r = 0.45); multi-trait-mono-method mean (self/parents) r = 0.29/0.36 (mail: r = 0.34/0.40); multi-trait-multi-method mean r = 0.14 (mail: r = 0.21). Weaker MTMM results were also observed for the phone administered SDQ: mono-trait-multi-method mean r = 0.32 (mail: r = 0.40); multi-trait-mono-method mean (self/parents) r = 0.24/0.30 (mail: r = 0.20/0.32); multi-trait-multi-method mean r = 0.14 (mail = 0.14). The SDQ classification into borderline and abnormal for some scales was affected by the method (OR = 0.36-1.55).

Conclusions

The observed differences between phone and mail surveys are small but should be regarded as relevant in certain settings. Therefore, while both methods are valid, some changes are necessary. The weaker reliability and MTMM validity associated with phone methods necessitates improved phone adaptations of paper and pencil questionnaires. The effects of phone versus mail survey modes are partly different across constructs/measures.</p
