How does Labour Mobility affect the Performance of Plants? The importance of relatedness and geographical proximity

This paper analyses the impact of skill portfolios and labour mobility on plant performance by means of a unique database that connects attributes of individuals to features of plants for the whole Swedish economy. We found that a portfolio of related competences at the plant level increases significantly productivity growth of plants, in contrast to plant portfolios consisting of either similar or unrelated competences. Based on the analysis of 101,093 job moves, we found that inflows of skills that are related to the existing knowledge base of the plant had a positive effect on plant performance, while the inflow of new employees with skills that are already present in the plant had a negative impact. Our analyses also show that geographical proximity influences the effect of different skill inflows. Inflows of unrelated skills only contribute positively to plant performance when these are recruited in the same region. Labour mobility across regions only has a positive effect on productivity growth of plants when this concerns new employees with related skills.Labour mobility; related variety; skill portfolio; plant performance; geographical proximi

Modification of the standard model for the lanthanides

We show that incorporation of strong electron correlations into the Kohn-Sham scheme of band structure calculations leads to a modification of the standard model of the lanthanides and that this procedure removes the existing discrepancy between theory and experiment concerning the ground state properties. Within the picture suggested, part of the upper Hubbard ff-band is occupied due to conduction band-ff-mixing interaction (that is renormalized due to correlations) and this contributes to the cohesive energy of the crystal. The lower Hubbard band has zero width and describes fermionic excitations in the shell of localized ff-s. Fully self-consistent calculations (with respect to both charge density and many-electron population numbers of the ff-shell) of the equilibrium volume V0V_0 and the bulk modulus of selected lanthanides have been performed and a good agreement is obtained.Comment: 1 fi

Experimental f-value and isotopic structure for the Ni I line blended with [OI] at 6300A

We have measured the oscillator strength of the Ni I line at 6300.34 \AA, which is known to be blended with the forbidden [O I] λ\lambda6300 line, used for determination of the oxygen abundance in cool stars. We give also wavelengths of the two isotopic line components of 58^{58}Ni and 60^{60}Ni derived from the asymmetric laboratory line profile. These two line components of Ni I have to be considered when calculating a line profile of the 6300 \AA\ feature observed in stellar and solar spectra. We also discuss the labelling of the energy levels involved in the Ni I line, as level mixing makes the theoretical predictions uncertain.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJLetter

Poisson equation and self-consistent periodical Anderson model

We show that the formally exact expression for the free energy (with a non-relativistic Hamiltonian) for the correlated metal generates the Poisson equation within the saddle-point approximation for the electric potential, where the charge density automatically includes correlations. In this approximation the problem is reduced to the self-consistent periodical Anderson model (SCPAM). The parameter of the mixing interaction in this formulation have to be found self-consistently together with the correlated charge density. The factors, calculated by Irkhin, for the mixing interaction, which reflect the structure of the many-electron states of the \f-ion involved, arise automatically in this formulation and are quite sensitive to the specific element we are interested in. We also discuss the definitions of the mixing interaction for the mapping from ab initio to model calculations.Comment: 25 pages, no figure

The presence of elafin, SLPI, IL1-RA and STNFalpha RI in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas and their relation to the degree of tumour differentiation.

Biopsy samples of head and neck carcinomas were investigated with regard to elafin, secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI), interleukin 1-receptor antagonist [(IL)1-RA] and soluble tumour necrosis factor alpha receptor antagonist (STNFalpha RI). SLPI and elafin are serine protease inhibitors produced in the serous cells of the upper respiratory airways and in the keratinocytes, respectively. We have now found the presence of elafin and SLPI in squamous cell carcinomas of the upper respiratory tract (tonsillar, hypopharyngeal, tongue, mouth floor, gingival and laryngeal cancer). Significantly higher amounts of SLPI and elafin are present in well-differentiated and moderately differentiated tumours than in poorly differentiated tumours (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0015). Tumour necrosis factor-alpha and IL-1beta have been shown to stimulate the production of SLPI and elafin. Since these cytokines can both be difficult to detect, we chose to study their inhibitors, STNFalpha RI and IL1-RA, instead. IL1-RA was expressed in highly differentiated tumours as well as in poorly differentiated ones. No significant difference was seen between the groups. STNFalpha RI was only found in very small amounts, sparsely distributed in the tumours, and was not related to the degree of differentiation
