Roads "drawn" to modernity: Religion and secularism in contemporary Turkey

Editorial cartoons do not just mirror politics, but are also themselves a part of politics. They are more than single-panel graphical commentaries on daily policies, for they construct their own claims on truth. The cartoonist can use the polysemic nature of visual signs and present a distinct framing perspective. Editorial cartoonists with certain ideological stances can become an actor in "the struggle for cultural supremacy," in Tarrow's (1998) term. This struggle refers to efforts by the state, media, and social movements to influence the interpretative processes by which individuals negotiate the meaning of events. This paper analyzes the editorial cartoons in Turkish daily newspapers in terms of their competing framings of contemporary Turkey's secularist-Islamist division. Secularism and Islamism refer here to political projects that seek to transform and reinstitute a sociopolitical order on the basis of some constitutive norms (Çinar 2005, 8-9)

Curvature Inheritance Symmetry In Riemannian Spaces with Applications to String Cloud and String Fluids

We study, in this paper, curvature inheritance symmetry (CI), $\pounds_{\xi}R_{bcd}^{a}=2\alpha R_{bcd}^{a}$, where $\alpha$ is a scalar function, for string cloud and string fluid in the context of general relativity. A novel mechanism of dasatinib-induced apoptosis in chronic myeloid leukemia; Ceramide synthase and ceramide clearance genes

Sphingolipids are bioeffector molecules that control various aspects of cell growth, proliferation, apoptosis, and drug resistance. Ceramides, the central molecule of sphingolipid metabolism, are inducer of apoptosis and inhibitors of proliferation. Sphingosine-1- phosphate (S1P) and glucosyleceramide, converted from ceramides by sphingosine kinase-1 (SK-1) and glucosyleceramide synthase (GCS) enzymes, respectively, inhibit apoptosis and develop resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. In this study, we examined the therapeutic potentials of bioactive sphingolipids in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) alone and in combination with dasatinib in addition to investigate the roles of ceramide-metabolizing genes in dasatinib-induced apoptosis. Cytotoxic effects of dasatinib, C8:ceramide, PDMP, and SK-1 inhibitor were determined by XTT cell proliferation assay. Changes in caspase-3 enzyme activity and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were measured using caspase-3 colorimetric assay and JC-1 MMP detection kit. Expression levels of ceramide-metabolizing genes were examined by qRT-PCR. Application of ceramide analogs and inhibitors of ceramide clearance genes decreased cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. Targeting bioactive sphingolipids towards generation/accumulation of ceramides increased apoptotic effects of dasatinib, synergistically. It was shown for the first time that dasatinib induces apoptosis through downregulating expression levels of antiapoptotic SK-1 but not GCS, and upregulating expression levels of ceramide synthase (CerS) genes, especially CerS1, in K562 cells. On the other hand, dasatinib downregulates expression levels of both GCS and SK-1 and upregulate apoptotic CerS2, -5 and -6 genes in Meg-01 cells. First-principles investigation of superconductivity in the body-centred tetragonal LaRu2P2

© 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.We have investigated the ground state and electronic properties of LaRu2P2 in the ThCr2Si2 structure using a generalised gradient approximation of the density functional theory and the ab initio pseudopotential method. We find that the calculated electronic properties of LaRu2P2 exhibit three-dimensional rather than two-dimensional characteristics in spite of the apparent two dimensionality in its atomic structure. An interesting feature of the phonon dispersion curves is the phonon anomaly in the lowest transverse acoustic branch as well as the longitudinal acoustic branch. We have shown that these phonon anomalies give rise to large electron-phonon interaction, as is evident from the calculated Eliashberg spectral function α2) F(ω) By integrating this spectral function, the value of average electron-phonon coupling parameter is calculated to be 0.85, from which the superconducting critical temperature is estimated to be 3.74 K, in gratifying accord with its experimental value of 4.0 K.This work was supported by the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜB˙ITAK) [project number MFAG-114F192]

Longitudinally vibrating elastic rods with locally and non-locally reacting viscous dampers

Abstract. Eigencharacteristics of a longitudinally vibrating elastic rod with locally and non-locally reacting damping are analyzed. The rod is considered as a continuous system and complex eigenfrequencies are determined as solution of a characteristic equation. The variation of the damping ratios with respect to damper locations and damping coefficients for the first four eigenfrequencies are obtained. It is shown that at any mode of locally or non-locally damped elastic rod, the variation of damping ratio with damper location is linearly proportional to absolute value of the mode shape of undamped system. It is seen that the increasing damping coefficient does not always increase the damping ratio and there are optimal values for the damping ratio. Optimal values for external damping coefficients of viscous dampers and locations of the dampers are presented

Politics, cultural heterogeneity and support for European Union membership in Turkey

This study analyses factors related to attitudes toward European Union (EU) accession, taking into account political affiliation, religious and ethnic identity, fear of foreign threat, utilitarian considerations, along with a number of other variables through a survey conducted among Turkish citizens in general and also among various Alevi communities. The results show that Alevi identity, in contrast to Kurdish background, was strongly indicative of positive attitudes toward the EU. Furthermore, in conjunction with existing literature on EU integration, political party affiliation, utilitarian concerns and fear of foreigners were associated with attitudes toward membership among all groups, while religiosity was not a significant determinant of attitudes toward the EU. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

Primary Solitary Tuberculosis of the Liver

Primary solitary tuberculous involvement of the liver is a rare condition. We present the case of a patient who was operated on with a preoperative diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver resection was performed and antituberculous therapy was started. It is difficult to make the correct diagnosis preoperatively except when a successful needle biopsy can be performed. Despite the rarity of the condition primary solitary tuberculosis should be considered among the space occupying lesions of the liver
