Hydraulic limits on tree performance: Transpiration, carbon gain and growth of trees

    Get PDF
An overview of the relationship between plant gas exchange, the potential hydraulic gradient, the size of the plant and its hydraulic conductance is presented. Key references are used to exemplify arguments of whole-plant optimality and to explain the origin and development of the dominant paradigm for interpreting the nature of water use and growth in plants.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Custom large scale integrated circuits for spaceborne SAR processors

    Get PDF
The application of modern LSI technology to the development of a time-domain azimuth correlator for SAR processing is discussed. General design requirements for azimuth correlators for missions such as SEASAT-A, Venus orbital imaging radar (VOIR), and shuttle imaging radar (SIR) are summarized. Several azimuth correlator architectures that are suitable for implementation using custom LSI devices are described. Technical factors pertaining to selection of appropriate LSI technologies are discussed, and the maturity of alternative technologies for spacecraft applications are reported in the context of expected space mission launch dates. The preliminary design of a custom LSI time-domain azimuth correlator device (ACD) being developed for use in future SAR processors is detailed

Real-time multiple-look synthetic aperture radar processor for spacecraft applications

    Get PDF
A spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) having pipeline multiple-look data processing is described which makes use of excessive azimuth bandwidth in radar echo signals to produce multiple-looking images. Time multiplexed single-look image lines from an azimuth correlator go through an energy analyzer which analyzes the mean energy in each separate look to determine the radar antenna electric boresight for use in generating the correct reference functions for the production of high quality SAR images. The multiplexed single look image lines also go through a registration delay to produce multi-look images

Chemistry of the system: Al2O3(c)minus HCL aqueous

    Get PDF
In order to study exhaust gas chemistry for the space shuttle, the vapor pressure of 2 to 1 weight mixtures of 3-M hydrochloric acid and Al2O3 was studied over a l80 minute reaction period at 31 C. The Al2O3 sample was one of high surface area furnished by NASA Langley Research Center. A brief review is given for aqueous aluminum chemistry, and the chemical reactions of combustion products (exhaust gases) of aluminum propellant binders for the space shuttle are listed

The effect of plasma on solar cell array arc characteristics

    Get PDF
The influence from the ambient plasma on the arc characteristics of a negatively biased solar cell array was investigated. The arc characteristics examined were the peak current during an arc, the decay time as the arc terminates, and the charge lost during the arc. These arc characteristics were examined in a nitrogen plasma with charge densities ranging from 15,000 to 45,000 cu cm. Background gas pressures ranged from 8x1,000,000 to 6x100,000 torr. Over these ranges of parameters no significant effect on the arc characteristics were seen. Arc characteristics were also examined for three gas species: helium, nitrogen and argon. The helium arcs have higher peak currents and shorter decay times than nitrogen and argon arcs. There are slight differences in the arc characteristics between nitrogen and argon. These differences may be caused by the differences in mass of the respective species. Also, evidence is presented for an electron emission mechanism appearing as a precursor to solar array arcs. Occassionally the plasma generator could be turned off, and currents could still be detected in the vacuum system. When these currents are presented, arcs may occur

The German Peasants’ War: The Intersection of Theology and Society

    Get PDF
This paper examines the way that Reformation theology, particularly that espoused by Martin Luther, impacted German society. Sixteenth-century German society was very hierarchical in nature, with the Roman Catholic Church at the top, followed by the nobility, and finally the peasants, who suffered economic and political plight. Luther’s break from the Church in 1517 and the subsequent years brought tension to society. Developments extending from that break challenged the social hierarchy. One of the major social consequences of the Protestant Reformation, which was rooted in Luther’s theology, was the Peasants’ War. Luther criticized the peasants for the uprising, based on his understand of the Two Kingdoms theology. Luther’s theology, then, created some unintentional social tension, which his historical context may help to explain
