Designing Generic and Efficient Negotiation Strategies

    No full text
The central aim of this thesis is the design of generic and efficient automated strategies for two-party negotiations in which negotiating parties do not reveal their preferences explicitly. A strategy for negotiation is the decision mechanism for determining the actions of a negotiator. Generic refers to the idea that the strategy needs no forehand knowledge about the opponent or the domain of negotiation. A strategy thus should be generic in the sense that it can be successfully applied to any negotiation domain and fine-tuned to domainspecific features to produce even better results. Efficiency refers to the fact that the strategy should be able to negotiate effectively against another automated agent or human negotiator and obtain an outcome that cannot be improved for both parties. The design of the negotiating strategy that is proposed in this thesis is based on analyses of the state-of- the-art negotiation strategies using an analytical method that is also proposed in this work. The method significantly extends existing negotiation benchmarks by analysing dynamic properties of a negotiation strategy. One of the main findings of the analysis, in line with the management and social science literature on negotiation [20, 23], is that the strategy should learn the opponent’s preferences in order to increase the negotiation efficiency. We applied our results in learning the opponents’ profiles in a one-to-many negotiation setting. We additionally addressed the problem of issue-dependencies. Issue dependencies form an insurmountable barrier for the state of the art negotiation strategies [9]. Therefore, we developed an approximation method to eliminate dependencies. This part of the research seems a side track, however it was fundamental that we address this problem to prove the scalability and applicability of our research results.MediamaticsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Opponent Modelling in Automated Multi-Issue Negotiation Using Bayesian Learning (extended abstract)

In this paper, we show that it is nonetheless possible to construct an opponent model, i.e. a model of the opponent’s preferences that can be effectively used to improve negotiation outcomes. We provide a generic framework for learning both the preferences associated with issue values as well as the weights that rank the importance of issues to an agent. The main idea is to exploit certain structural features and rationality principles to guide the learning process and focuses the algorithm on the most likely preference profiles of an opponent. We present a learning algorithm based on Bayesian learning techniques that computes the probability that an opponent has a particular preference profile. Our approach can be integrated into various negotiating agents using different strategies.Intelligent SystemsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Let's dans! An analytic framework of negotiation dynamics and strategies

    No full text
The “negotiation dance”, as Raiffa calls the dynamic pattern of the bidding, has an important influence on the outcome of the negotiation. The current practice of evaluating a negotiation strategy is to focus on fairness and quality aspects of the agreement. In this article we present the framework DANS (Dynamics Analysis of Negotiation Strategies) for the analysis of the dynamic patterns of the bidding as a means to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of negotiation strategies for bidding. The method provides the tools to perform a detailed and quantified analysis of a negotiation between two agents in terms of dynamic properties of the negotiation trace. The classification of negotiation steps in the dance plays a central role in the analysis. The method can be applied to tournaments, but can also be used to analyze single 1-on-1 negotiation sessions. The sessions can be played by humans or by software agents. Using DANS we show that some strategies are sensitive to the bidding behaviour of the opponent, and some depend on a correct model of the opponent. DANS helped us in discovering that domain characteristics are important for the analysis of strategies. Some strategies rely heavily on some domain assumptions. Furthermore, the results illustrate that having domain knowledge is not always enough to avoid making unintentional steps. The method is demonstrated in the analysis of three strategies from the literature ABMP, Trade-Off and Bayesian Agent.MediamaticsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Approximating the Qualitative Vickrey Auction by a Negotiation Protocol (extended abstract)

    No full text
Some auction mechanisms can be shown to be efficient and strategy-proof. However, they generally require that the preferences of at least one side of the auction are publicly known. However, sometimes it is very costly, impossible, or undesirable to publicly announce such preferences. It thus is interesting to find methods that do not impose this constraint but still approximate the outcome of the auction. In this paper we show that a multi-round multi-party negotiation protocol may be used to this end if the negotiating agents are capable of learning opponent preferences. The latter condition can be met by current state of the art negotiation technology. We show that this protocol approximates the theoretical outcome predicted by a so-called Qualitative Vickrey auction mechanism (even) on a complex multi-issue domain.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Approximating an Auction Mechanism by Multi-Issue Negotiation

    No full text
The main question addressed in this paper is whether a theoretical outcome determined by an auction mechanism can be reasonably approximated by negotiation among agents in order to drop some of the unrealistic constraints or assumptions presupposed by the mechanism. In particular, we are interested in whether the assumption that a buyer publicly announces her preferences in order to guarantee perfect knowledge of these preferences can be dropped if a negotiating agent is used that can learn preferences. We show how to setup a multiplayer multi-issue negotiation process where preferences are learned, and we investigate how the results of this process relate to the theoretical result of holding an auction in the case of complete knowledge about the preferences of the buyer. Experiments show that the outcomes obtained by negotiating agents that learn opponent preferences approximate the outcome predicted by the mechanism. It thus follows that the assumption of perfect knowledge about buyer preferences can be removed when players are equipped with proper learning capabilities. We also investigate whether the procedure dictated by the mechanism can be further relaxed but in that case experiments indicate that more complex considerations about the market need to be taken into account.Software Computer TechnologyElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

GENIUS: An integrated environment for supporting the design of generic automated negotiators

    No full text
The design of automated negotiators has been the focus of abundant research in recent years. However, due to difficulties involved in creating generalized agents that can negotiate in several domains and against human counterparts, many automated negotiators are domain specific and their behavior cannot be generalized for other domains. Some of these difficulties arise from the differences inherent within the domains, the need to understand and learn negotiators’ diverse preferences concerning issues of the domain, and the different strategies negotiators can undertake. In this paper we present a system that enables alleviation of the difficulties in the design process of general automated negotiators termed GENIUS, a General Environment for Negotiation with Intelligent multipurpose Usage Simulation. With the constant introduction of new domains, e-commerce and other applications, which require automated negotiations, generic automated negotiators encompass many benefits and advantages over agents that are designed for a specific domain. Based on experiments conducted with automated agents designed by human subjects using GENIUS we provide both quantitative and qualitative results to illustrate its efficacy. Finally, we also analyze a recent automated bilateral negotiators competition that was based on GENIUS. Our results show the advantages and underlying benefits of using GENIUS and how it can facilitate the design of general automated negotiators.Intelligent SystemsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

The on-orbit calibration of DArk Matter Particle Explorer

    No full text
The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a satellite-based cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector, was launched on December 17, 2015, and began its on-orbit operation on December 24, 2015. In this work we document the on-orbit calibration procedures used by DAMPE and report the calibration results of the Plastic Scintillator strip Detector (PSD), the Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK), the BGO imaging calorimeter (BGO), and the Neutron Detector (NUD). The results are obtained using Galactic cosmic rays, bright known GeV gamma-ray sources, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each sub-detector. The determination of the boundary of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), the measurement of the live time, and the alignments of the detectors are also introduced. The calibration results demonstrate the stability of the detectors in almost two years of the on-orbit operation
