    Causal and associational language in observational health research: A systematic evaluation.

Available from Oxford University Press via the DOI in this record. Data, data analysis code, and materials are available on the Open Science Framework project https://osf.io/jtdaz/.We estimated the degree to which language used in the high profile medical/public health/epidemiology literature implied causality using language linking exposures to outcomes and action recommendations; examined disconnects between language and recommendations; identified the most common linking phrases; and estimated how strongly linking phrases imply causality. We searched and screened for 1,170 articles from 18 high-profile journals (65 per journal) published from 2010-2019. Based on written framing and systematic guidance, three reviewers rated the degree of causality implied in abstracts and full text for exposure/outcome linking language and action recommendations. Reviewers rated the causal implication of exposure/outcome linking language as None (no causal implication) in 13.8%, Weak 34.2%, Moderate 33.2%, and Strong 18.7% of abstracts. The implied causality of action recommendations was higher than the implied causality of linking sentences for 44.5% or commensurate for 40.3% of articles. The most common linking word in abstracts was "associate" (45.7%). Reviewers' ratings of linking word roots were highly heterogeneous; over half of reviewers rated "association" as having at least some causal implication.     Representation is a primitive notion of many philosophical theories and of cognitive science. It is assumed as an intuitively understandable label assigned to the functions by which a biological or an artificial agent takes part in the world in an epistemological or a behavioral manner. It is employed to define the conditions for the semantic individuation of the states of the agent. The notion of representation was introduced systematically in the Scholastics’ view of cognition. In modern philosophy, the term is often used as a verb. Representation becomes the function of a class of mental states. In contemporary philosophy, the debate over the semantic individuation of states is intertwined with biology and cognitive science

    The specific inherent optical properties of three sub-tropical and tropical water reservoirs in Queensland, Australia

    The underwater light climate, which is a major influence on the ecology of aquatic systems, is affected by the absorption and scattering processes that take place within the water column. Knowledge of the Specific Inherent Optical Properties (SIOPs) of water quality parameters and their spatial variation is essential for the modelling of underwater light fields and remote sensing applications. We measured the SIOPs and water quality parameter concentrations of three large inland water impoundments in Queensland, Australia. The measurements ranged from 0.9–42.7 μgl/1 for chlorophyll a concentration, 0.9–170.4 mgl/1 for tripton concentration, 0.36–1.59 m/1 for aCDOM(440) and 0.15–2.5 m for Secchi depth. The SIOP measurements showed that there is sufficient intra-impoundment variation in the specific absorption and specific scattering of phytoplankton and tripton to require a well distributed network of measurement stations to fully characterise the SIOPs of the optical water quality parameters. While significantly different SIOP sets were measured for each of the study sites the measurements were consistent with published values in other inland waters. The multiple measurement stations were allocated into optical domains as a necessary step to parameterise a semi-analytical inversion remote sensing algorithm.
