Chemical structure matching using correlation matrix memories
This paper describes the application of the Relaxation By Elimination (RBE) method to matching the 3D structure of molecules in chemical databases within the frame work of binary correlation matrix memories. The paper illustrates that, when combined with distributed representations, the method maps well onto these networks, allowing high performance implementation in parallel systems. It outlines the motivation, the neural architecture, the RBE method and presents some results of matching small molecules against a database of 100,000 models
Collisionless heating in capacitive discharges enhanced by dual-frequency excitation
We discuss collisionless electron heating in capacitive discharges excited by a combination of two disparate frequencies. By developing an analytical model, we find, contrary to expectation, that the net heating in this case is much larger than the sum of the effects occurring when the two frequencies act separately. This prediction is substantiated by kinetic simulations, which are also in excellent general quantitative agreement with the model for discharge parameters that are typical of recent experiments

Supporting reflection and creative thinking by carers of older people with dementia
This vision paper frames requirements engineering as a creative problem solving process. Its purpose is to enable requirements researchers and practitioners to recruit relevant theories, models, techniques and tools from creative problem solving to understand and support requirements processes more effectively. It uses 4 drivers to motivate the case for requirements engineering as a creative problem solving process. It then maps established requirements activities onto one of the longest-established creative problem solving processes, and uses these mappings to locate opportunities for the application of creative problem solving in requirements engineering. The second half of the paper describes selected creativity theories, techniques, software tools and training that can be adopted to improve requirements engineering research and practice. The focus is on support for problem and idea finding - two creative problem solving processes that our investigation revealed are poorly supported in requirements engineering. The paper ends with a research agenda to incorporate creative processes, techniques, training and tools in requirements projects

Diffraction-contrast imaging of cold atoms
We consider the inverse problem of in-line holography, applied to
minimally-destructive imaging of cold atom clouds. Absorption imaging
near-resonance provides a simple, but destructive measurement of atom column
density. Imaging off resonance greatly reduces heating, and sequential images
may be taken. Under the conditions required for off-resonant imaging, the
generally-intractable inverse problem may be linearized. A
minimally-destructive, quantitative and high-resolution image of the atom cloud

ASCA observations of type-2 Seyfert galaxies: II. The Importance of X-ray Scattering and Reflection
We discuss the importance of X-ray scattering and Compton reflection in
type-2 Seyfert galaxies, based upon the analysis of ASCA observations of 25
such sources. Consideration of the iron Kalpha, [O III] line and X-ray
variability suggest that NGC 1068, NGC 4945, NGC 2992, Mrk 3, Mrk 463E and Mrk
273 are dominated by reprocessed X-rays. We examine the properties of these
sources in more detail.
We find that the iron Kalpha complex contains significant contributions from
neutral and high-ionization species of iron. Compton reflection, hot gas and
starburst emission all appear to make significant contributions to the observed
X-ray spectra.
Mrk 3 is the only source in this subsample which does not have a significant
starburst contamination. The ASCA spectrum below 3 keV is dominated by hot
scattering gas with U_X ~ 5, N_H ~ 4 x 10^23 cm^-2. This material is more
highly ionized than the zone of material comprising the warm absorber seen in
Seyfert~1 galaxies, but may contain a contribution from shock-heated gas
associated with the jet. Estimates of the X-ray scattering fraction cover 0.25
- 5%. The spectrum above 3 keV appears to be dominated by a Compton reflection
component although there is evidence that the primary continuum component

The topological glass in ring polymers
We study the dynamics of concentrated, long, semi-flexible, unknotted and unlinked ring polymers embedded in a gel by Monte Carlo simulation of a coarse-grained model. This involves the ansatz that the rings compactify into a duplex structure where they can be modelled as linear polymers. The classical polymer glass transition involves a rapid loss of microscopic freedom within the polymer molecule as the temperature is reduced toward Tg. Here we are interested in temperatures well above Tg where the polymers retain high microscopic mobility. We analyse the slowing of stress relaxation originating from inter-ring penetrations (threadings). For long polymers an extended network of quasi-topological penetrations forms. The longest relaxation time appears to depend exponentially on the ring polymer contour length, reminiscent of the usual exponential slowing (e.g., with temperature) in classical glasses. Finally, we discuss how this represents a universality class for glassy dynamics

If the Barnett formula is rigorously applied to determine the budget of the Welsh Assembly Government, this will ultimately adversely affect the economy of Wales by limiting the growth in aggregate demand. This effect is reinforced now that population weights determining rises in expenditure in Wales (and Scotland and Northern Ireland) are regularly up-dated. There is some controversy in Wales about whether some form of needs-assessment exercise would favour Wales relative to its current position. What is clear is that the outcome of a rigorous, long term application of the Barnett formula would be a share of UK public expenditures in Wales (and Scotland and Northern Ireland) that was almost certainly below the level that would be dictated by any conventional understanding of 'needs'. The impact of the tax-varying power favoured by the Richard Commission is ambiguous, with the direction of effects dependent on the reaction of the current labour force and potential migrants. If workers insist on full compensation for loss of income to tax through a rise in gross wages a tax rise would lead to an economic contraction. However, if workers value the additional public services financed by the tax rise as equal to their loss of disposable income, this effect can be avoided.
