Instabilities of dispersion-managed solitons in the normal dispersion regime

Dispersion-managed solitons are reviewed within a Gaussian variational approximation and an integral evolution model. In the normal regime of the dispersion map (when the averaged path dispersion is negative), there are two solitons of different pulse duration and energy at a fixed propagation constant. We show that the short soliton with a larger energy is linearly (exponentially) unstable. The other (long) soliton with a smaller energy is linearly stable but hits a resonance with excitations of the dispersion map. The results are compared with the results from the recent publicationsComment: 20 figures, 20 pages. submitted to Phys. Rev.

We present a class of solutions with a period multiple to that one of the standard dispersion-managed soliton in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic variations of dispersion

Optimization of discrete Raman amplifiers for different kinds of fibers

    Get PDF
We present an analysis of the performance of backward-pumped discrete Raman amplifier modules designed for simultaneous amplification and dispersion and/or dispersion slope compensation, both in single-channel and in multi-channel systems. Optimal module parameters are determined within a realistic range of pump and signal powers

We demonstrate the ultra-broadband gain medium exploiting cascaded Raman amplification. Pumping the 5-km long linear cavity fiber laser at 1349 nm we show the runability of the laser operation from 1400 to 1622 nm

Using Simple Neural Networks to Correct Errors in Optical Data Transmission.

We have demonstrated the applicability of neural-network-based systems to the problem of reducing the effects of signal distortion, and shown that such a system has the potential to reduce the bit-error-rate in the digitized version of the analogue electrical signal derived from an optical data stream by a substantial margin over existing techniques

The impact of parametric noise amplification on long haul transmission throughput

    Get PDF
Advanced signal processing, such as multi-channel digital back propagation and mid span optical phase conjugation, can compensate for inter channel nonlinear effects in point to point links. However, once such are effects are compensated, the interaction between the signal and noise fields becomes dominant. We will show that this interaction has a direct impact on the signal to noise ratio improvement, observing that ideal optical phase conjugation offers 1.5 dB more performance benefit than DSP based compensation

Capacity in nonlinear fiber transmission systems

    Get PDF
We review the nonlinear channel capacity of optical fiber communication systems using both linear and nonlinear amplifiers. We show that the capacity of a nonlinear transmission system employing linear optical amplifiers can be enhanced by over 300% by using all optical regeneration

Numerical modeling of fiber lasers with long and ultra-long ring cavity

    Get PDF
We highlight two important aspects related to a mathematical modeling of pulsed fiber lasers with long and ultra-long ring cavity -impact of an initial noise and a cavity length on generation of single optical pulses. Using as an example a simple scalar model of a ring fiber laser that describes the radiation build-up from noise and the following intra-cavity pulse dynamics during a round trip we study dependence of generated pulse characteristics on the resonator length in the range from 30 m up to 2 km

Log-log growth of channel capacity for nondispersive nonlinear optical fiber channel in intermediate power range

    Get PDF
We consider a model nondispersive nonlinear optical fiber channel with an additive Gaussian noise. Using Feynman path-integral technique, we find the optimal input signal distribution maximizing the channel's per-sample mutual information at large signal-to-noise ratio in the intermediate power range. The optimal input signal distribution allows us to improve previously known estimates for the channel capacity. We calculate the output signal entropy, conditional entropy, and per-sample mutual information for Gaussian, half-Gaussian, and modified Gaussian input signal distributions. We demonstrate that in the intermediate power range the capacity (the per-sample mutual information for the optimal input signal distribution) is greater than the per-sample mutual information for half-Gaussian input signal distribution considered previously as the optimal one. We also show that the capacity grows as loglogP in the intermediate power range, where P is the signal power

We experimentally demonstrate a novel fibre nonlinearity compensation technique for CO-OFDM based on phase-conjugated pilots (PCPs), showing that, by varying the PCP overhead a performance improvement up to 4 dB can be achieved allowing highly flexible adaptation to link characteristics
