From Care-less to Care-full: Education for Citizenship in Schools and Beyond
This article attempts to disrupt liberal democratic understandings of citizenship as they inform social studies curricula in schools. Care-less citizenship is used throughout the article to describe the denial or propensity to ignore the deep inequities that exist in the world. The article also implicates schooling, and in particular social studies education, in the maintenance of citizenship as a falsely universalized construct through such practices as standardization and high-stakes testing. Conceptions and experiences of citizenship articulated by five secondary social studies teachers and 10 preservice teachers provide a means through which to improve understanding of how students are constructed as citizens in relation to the prescribed and negotiated curriculum encountered in classrooms. Finally, the article advances an understanding of citizenship as care-fullâthat is, attentive, relational, and caringâin which conditions of oppression operating to limit the realization of equity are continual subjects of interrogation.
Are Marine Protected Areas in the Turks and Caicos Islands ecologically or economically valuable?
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are often advocated by ecologists as a method of conserving valuable fish stocks while ensuring the integrity of ecological processes in the face of increasing anthropogenic disturbance. In the Turks and Caicos Islands there is little evidence that current MPAs are ecologically beneficial but there are indications that boundary changes may enhance queen conch and finfish production. Implementing boundary changes usually requires political will and, hence, quantifiable economic benefits. Assessing the value of reef fish is particularly important because they are potentially valuable for consumptive and nonconsumptive purposes. We demonstrate the nonconsumptive economic value of increased Nassau grouper size and abundance to the dive tourism industry through a paired comparison conjoint survey of visiting divers. Our results suggest that accounting for the non-consumptive economic value of increased Nassau grouper abundance and size may have a large impact on the economic viability of ecologically functional MPAs

Online list coloring for signed graphs
We generalize the notion of online list coloring to signed graphs. We define the online list chromatic number of a signed graph, and prove a generalization of Brooksâ Theorem. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a signed graph to be degree paintable, or degree choosable. Finally, we classify the 2-list-colorable and 2-list-paintable signed graphs
A classification of spherically symmetric spacetimes
A complete classification of locally spherically symmetric four-dimensional
Lorentzian spacetimes is given in terms of their local conformal symmetries.
The general solution is given in terms of canonical metric types and the
associated conformal Lie algebras. The analysis is based upon the local
conformal decomposition into 2+2 reducible spacetimes and the Petrov type. A
variety of physically meaningful example spacetimes are discussed
On the dual interpretation of zero-curvature Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models
Two possible interpretations of FRW cosmologies (perfect fluid or dissipative
fluid)are considered as consecutive phases of the system. Necessary conditions
are found, for the transition from perfect fluid to dissipative regime to
occur, bringing out the conspicuous role played by a particular state of the
system (the ''critical point '').Comment: 13 pages Latex, to appear in Class.Quantum Gra
Ghost Condensate Busting
Applying the Thomas-Fermi approximation to renormalizable field theories, we
construct ghost condensation models that are free of the instabilities
associated with violations of the null-energy condition.Comment: 9 pages, minor corrections, a reference added, the discussion on
consistency of the Thomas-Fermi approximation expanded, to appear in JCA
