    Development of a cantilever beam generator employing vibration energy harvesting

    This paper details the development of a generator based upon a cantilever beam inertial mass system which harvests energy from ambient environmental vibrations. The paper compares the predicted results from Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the mechanical behaviour and magnetic field simulations and experimental results from a generator. Several design changes were implemented to maximise the conversion of magnetic energy into generated power and a maximum power output of 17.8µW was achieved at a resonant frequency of 56.6Hz and an applied acceleration of 60mg (g = 9.81ms-2)

    Metallic Triple Beam Resonator with Thick-film Printed Drive and Pickup

    A triple beam resonator fabricated in 430S17 stainless steel with thick-film piezoelectric elements to drive and detect the vibrations is presented. The resonator substrate was fabricated by a simultaneous, double-sided photochemical etching technique and the thick-film piezoelectric elements were deposited by a standard screen-printing process. The combination of these two batch-fabrication processes provides the opportunity for mass production of the device at low cost. The resonator, a dynamically balanced triple beam tuning fork (TBTF) structure 23.5 mm long and 6.5 mm wide, has a favoured mode at 4.96 kHz with a Q-factor of 3630 operating in air

    Non-equilibrium spin dynamics in a trapped Fermi gas with effective spin-orbit interaction

    We consider a trapped atomic system in the presence of spatially varying laser fields. The laser-atom interaction generates a pseudospin degree of freedom (referred to simply as spin) and leads to an effective spin-orbit coupling for the fermions in the trap. Reflections of the fermions from the trap boundaries provide a physical mechanism for effective momentum relaxation and non-trivial spin dynamics due to the emergent spin-orbit coupling. We explicitly consider evolution of an initially spin-polarized Fermi gas in a two-dimensional harmonic trap and derive non-equilibrium behavior of the spin polarization. It shows periodic echoes with a frequency equal to the harmonic trapping frequency. Perturbations, such as an asymmetry of the trap, lead to the suppression of the spin echo amplitudes.     Steps to Better Cardiovascular Health: How Many Steps Does It Take to Achieve Good Health and How Confident Are We in This Number?

    Pedometers and other types of step-counting devices are growing in popularity with both researchers and practitioners. The focus of this article is on describing the most recent pedometer-related advances in terms of cardiovascular health. The emergent body of evidence suggests that pedometer-determined physical activity is related to a number of cardiovascular health outcomes and that intervention participants can realize modest changes in body mass index and blood pressure. Taking into consideration individual baseline values, tailored messages congruent with public health recommendations should promote incremental increases in steps/day on the order of an extra 3,000 to 4,000 (approximately 30 min) of at least moderate intensity and taken in at least 10-minute bouts. Additional health benefits accrue with greater increases. Of course, even more benefits are possible from engaging in vigorous physical activity, but this seems less appealing for most people. Pedometer-based guidelines are not intended to supplant existing public health recommendations, but rather supplement them

    Background Health leadership and management are essential for ensuring resilient health systems. Relevant training opportunities are often scarce, and the use of digital education could help address this gap. Our aim was to assess the effectiveness of eLearning for healthcare leadership and management capacity building. Methods We performed a systematic review on the effectiveness of eLearning for health leadership and management training. We also reviewed literature on relevant competencies and training programmes. We conceptualise the role of health leadership and management capacity building in health system strengthening and explore the use of eLearning in this area. Results No evidence was found on the effectiveness of eLearning for health leadership and management capacity guiding. Evidence on health leadership and management education effectiveness in general is scarce and descriptive and reports learning outcomes. We explore how various forms of eLearning can help meet specific requirements of health leadership and management training. Conclusions Literature on the effectiveness of health leadership and management education is scarce. The use of eLearning could support this type of training by making it more accessible and tailored. Future research should be carried out in diverse settings, assume experimental designs, evaluate the use of information technology and report health system outcomes
