"'Asianness Under Construction:' The Contours and Negotiation of Panethnic Identity/Culture among Interethnically Married Asian Americans."
Based on life-history interviews of interethnically married U.S.-raised Asians, this article examines
the meaning and dynamics of Asian American interethnic marriages, and what they reveal about
the complex incorporative process of this âin-betweenâ racial minority group into the U.S.. In
particular, this article explores the connection between Asian American interethnic marriage
and pan-Asian consciousness/identity, both in terms of how panethnicity shapes romantic/
marital desires of individuals and how pan-Asian culture and identity is invented and negotiated
in the process of family-making. My findings indicate that while strong pan-Asian consciousness/
identity underlies the connection among intermarried couples, these unions are not simply
a defensive effort to âpreserveâ Asian-ethnic identity and cultur against a society that still
racializes Asian Americans, but a tentative and often unpremeditated effort to navigate a path
toward integration into the society through an ethnically based, albeit hybrid and reconstructed
identity and culture, that helps the respondents retain the integrity of âAsianness.
Is There Evidence of "Whitening" For Asian/White Multiracial People in Britain?
Growing rates of interracial unions in multi-ethnic societies such as Britain are notable, and point to significant changes in the blurring and possibly shifting nature of ethnic and racial boundaries. Asian Americans who partner with White Americans are assumed to engage in âwhiteningâ â both in terms of their aspirations and their social consequences. Yet little is still known about the aftermath of intermarriage, even in the USA. Drawing on this US literature, this paper considers the whitening thesis in relation to multiracial people in Britain, with a particular focus on Asian/White multiracial people. I draw upon the findings of two British studies â one of multiracial young people in higher education (Aspinall & Song 2013), and another of multiracial people who are parents (Song 2017) â to explore these questions. I argue that conceptualizations of part Asian people (in the USA) as leaning toward their White heritages are often unsubstantiated, and deduced primarily from one key factor: their high rates of intermarriage with White spouses. In addition to the variable ways in which part Asian people may relate to their minority and White ancestries, we must consider the ambivalence, tensions, and contextually variable identifications and practices adopted by multiracial people
TRY plant trait database â enhanced coverage and open access
Plant traits - the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants - determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of traitâbased plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits - almost complete coverage for âplant growth formâ. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and traitâenvironmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives
Engineering tubular bone constructs
Cell-sheet techniques have been proven effective in various soft tissue engineering applications. In this experiment, we investigated the feasibility of bone tissue engineering using a hybrid of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) sheets and PLGA meshes. Porcine MSCs were cultured to a thin layer of cell sheets via osteogenic induction. Tube-like long bones were constructed by wrapping the cell sheet on to PLGA meshes resulting in constructs which could be cultured in spinner flasks, prior to implantation in nude rats. Our results showed that the sheets were composed of viable cells and dense matrix with a thickness of about 80â120 mm, mineral deposition was also observed in the sheet. In vitro cultures demonstrated calcified cartilage-like tissue formation and most PLGA meshes were absorbed during the 8-week culture period. In vivo experiments revealed that dense mineralized tissue was formed in subcutaneous sites and the 8- week plants shared similar micro-CT characteristics with native bone. The neo tissue demonstrated histological markers for both bone and cartilage, indicating that the bone formation pathway in constructs was akin to endochondral ossification, with the residues of PLGA having an effect on the neo tissue organization and formation. These results indicate that cell-sheet approaches in combination with custom-shaped scaffolds have potential in producing bone tissue
