    Bifid mandibular canals and their cortex thicknesses: A comparison study on images obtained from cone-beam and multislice computed tomography

    AbstractBackground/purposeHigh prevalence of bifid mandibular canals has been visualized with various types of computerized tomography (CT). Along the canals, a various ranged corticalization was recently reported. The depiction of the fine anatomic structures on multislice and cone-beam CT images was compared.Material and methodsThe presence or absence of the bifid canal was assessed on 327 images obtained by multislice CT (MSCT; n = 173) or by cone-beam CT (CBCT; n = 154), according to the configuration. The cortex thickness and distribution were also assessed.ResultsThe prevalence of bifid canal detected by CBCT was significantly greater than that detected by MSCT (42.2% vs. 18.7% for hemi-mandibles and 58.4% vs. 30.6% for patients). Cortical thickness recorded by CBCT was significantly thinner than that recorded by MSCT (0.48 mm vs. 0.65 mm, P < 0.001); however, the distributions of corticalization detected by the two tomography methods were similar. There was a significant association of cortex thickness with CT type and corticalization degree (R2 = 0.530, P < 0.001).ConclusionThinner cortices, but greater prevalence of bifid canals recorded by CBCT, compared to MSCT, suggests that clinicians should be cautious when using CT to interpret this fine anatomic structure

    Fractional-Order PID Controllers for Temperature Control:A Review

    Fractional-order proportional integral derivative (FOPID) controllers are becoming increasingly popular for various industrial applications due to the advantages they can offer. Among these applications, heating and temperature control systems are receiving significant attention, applying FOPID controllers to achieve better performance and robustness, more stability and flexibility, and faster response. Moreover, with several advantages of using FOPID controllers, the improvement in heating systems and temperature control systems is exceptional. Heating systems are characterized by external disturbance, model uncertainty, non-linearity, and control inaccuracy, which directly affect performance. Temperature control systems are used in industry, households, and many types of equipment. In this paper, fractional-order proportional integral derivative controllers are discussed in the context of controlling the temperature in ambulances, induction heating systems, control of bioreactors, and the improvement achieved by temperature control systems. Moreover, a comparison of conventional and FOPID controllers is also highlighted to show the improvement in production, quality, and accuracy that can be achieved by using such controllers. A composite analysis of the use of such controllers, especially for temperature control systems, is presented. In addition, some hidden and unhighlighted points concerning FOPID controllers are investigated thoroughly, including the most relevant publications

    Radiosurgery for Vestibular Schwannomas

    BackgroundRadiosurgery has been established as an important alternative to microsurgery. We report our experience with radiosurgery for tumor control and the complications of unilateral vestibular schwannomas.MethodsWe reviewed our early experience regarding clinical presentation, management and outcomes in 45 patients with acoustic schwannomas who underwent gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery. The median follow-up period was 25 months (range, 6-48 months). Thirteen patients had undergone 1 or more previous resections before radiosurgery; 32 underwent radiosurgery as the first procedure. Median tumor volume was 4.5 mL (range, 0.5-30.0), and median radiotherapy dose was 11.5 Gy (range, 10.5-14.0 Gy).ResultsTumor control was achieved in 43 patients (95.6%). Loss of central contrast enhancement was a characteristic change and was noted in 29 patients (64.4%). Reduction in tumor size was shown in 15 patients (33.3%). Thirteen patients (28.9%) had good or serviceable hearing preoperatively, and in all of these, the preoperative status was retained immediately after radiosurgery. At follow-up, however, 10 patients (76.9%) had preserved hearing and 3 (23.1%) had reduced hearing on the treated side. Hearing in 1 patient that was not serviceable preoperatively later improved to a serviceable level. No patients had delayed facial palsy or lower cranial nerve dysfunction, but one had delayed trigeminal sensory loss.ConclusionRadiosurgery achieved a high tumor control rate and a relatively low post-radiosurgical complication rate for acoustic neuromas

    A data analysis method for isochronous mass spectrometry using two time-of-flight detectors at CSRe

    The concept of isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) applying two time-of-flight (TOF) detectors originated many years ago at GSI. However, the corresponding method for data analysis has never been discussed in detail. Recently, two TOF detectors have been installed at CSRe and the new working mode of the ring is under test. In this paper, a data analysis method for this mode is introduced and tested with a series of simulations. The results show that the new IMS method can significantly improve mass resolving power via the additional velocity information of stored ions. This improvement is especially important for nuclides with Lorentz factor γ\gamma-value far away from the transition point γt\gamma _t of the storage ring CSRe.Comment: published in Chinese Physics C Vol. 39, No. 10 (2015) 10620

    Characterization of Sucrose transporter alleles and their association with seed yield-related traits in Brassica napus L

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sucrose is the primary photosynthesis product and the principal translocating form within higher plants. <it>Sucrose transporters </it>(<it>SUC/SUT</it>) play a critical role in phloem loading and unloading. Photoassimilate transport is a major limiting factor for seed yield. Our previous research demonstrated that <it>SUT </it>co-localizes with yield-related quantitative trait loci. This paper reports the isolation of <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>alleles and their promoters and their association with yield-related traits.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two novel <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>genes were isolated from <it>B. napus </it>lines 'Eagle' and 'S-1300' and designated as <it>BnA7.SUT1.a </it>and <it>BnA7.SUT1.b</it>, respectively. The BnA7.SUT1 protein exhibited typical SUT features and showed high amino acid homology with related species. Promoters of <it>BnA7.SUT1.a </it>and <it>BnA7.SUT1.b </it>were also isolated and classified as <it>pBnA7.SUT1.a </it>and <it>pBnA7.SUT1.b</it>, respectively. Four dominant sequence-characterized amplified region markers were developed to distinguish <it>BnA7.SUT1.a </it>and <it>BnA7.SUT1.b</it>. The two genes were estimated as alleles with two segregating populations (F<sub>2 </sub>and BC<sub>1</sub>) obtained by crossing '3715'×'3769'. <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>was mapped to the A7 linkage group of the TN doubled haploid population. <it>In silico </it>analysis of 55 segmental <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>alleles resulted three <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>clusters: <it>pBnA7.SUT1.a- BnA7.SUT1.a </it>(type I), <it>pBnA7.SUT1.b- BnA7.SUT1.a </it>(type II), and <it>pBnA7.SUT1.b- BnA7.SUT1.b </it>(type III). Association analysis with a diverse panel of 55 rapeseed lines identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in promoter and coding domain sequences of <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>that were significantly associated with one of three yield-related traits: number of effective first branches (EFB), siliques per plant (SP), and seed weight (n = 1000) (TSW) across all four environments examined. SNPs at other <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>sites were also significantly associated with at least one of six yield-related traits: EFB, SP, number of seeds per silique, seed yield per plant, block yield, and TSW. Expression levels varied over various tissue/organs at the seed-filling stage, and <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>expression positively correlated with EFB and TSW.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Sequence, mapping, association, and expression analyses collectively showed significant diversity between the two <it>BnA7.SUT1 </it>alleles, which control some of the phenotypic variation for branch number and seed weight in <it>B. napus </it>consistent with expression levels. The associations between allelic variation and yield-related traits may facilitate selection of better genotypes in breeding.</p

    Radiality of definable sets

    In this article we use techniques developed by Hrushovski-Loeser to study certain metric properties of the Berkovich analytification of a finite morphism of smooth connected projective curves. In recent work, M. Temkin proved a radiality statement for the topological ramification locus associated to such finite morphisms. We generalize this result in two directions. We prove a radiality statement for a more general class of sets which we call definable sets. In another direction, we show that the result of Temkin can be obtained in families

    Purification and Characterization of Hemagglutinating Proteins from Poker-Chip Venus (Meretrix lusoria) and Corbicula Clam (Corbicula fluminea)

    Hemagglutinating proteins (HAPs) were purified from Poker-chip Venus (Meretrix lusoria) and Corbicula clam (Corbicula fluminea) using gel-filtration chromatography on a Sephacryl S-300 column. The molecular weights of the HAPs obtained from Poker-chip Venus and Corbicula clam were 358 kDa and 380 kDa, respectively. Purified HAP from Poker-chip Venus yielded two subunits with molecular weights of 26 kDa and 29 kDa. However, only one HAP subunit was purified from Corbicula clam, and its molecular weight was 32 kDa. The two Poker-chip Venus HAPs possessed hemagglutinating ability (HAA) for erythrocytes of some vertebrate animal species, especially tilapia. Moreover, HAA of the HAP purified from Poker-chip Venus was higher than that of the HAP of Corbicula clam. Furthermore, Poker-chip Venus HAPs possessed better HAA at a pH higher than 7.0. When the temperature was at 4°C–10°C or the salinity was less than 0.5‰, the two Poker-chip Venus HAPs possessed better HAA compared with that of Corbicula clam
