    Convergence of numerical schemes for short wave long wave interaction equations

    We consider the numerical approximation of a system of partial differential equations involving a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation coupled with a hyperbolic conservation law. This system arises in models for the interaction of short and long waves. Using the compensated compactness method, we prove convergence of approximate solutions generated by semi-discrete finite volume type methods towards the unique entropy solution of the Cauchy problem.     A concrete and experimentally feasible example for testing the putative Majorana zero energy state bound in a vortex is theoretically proposed for a parallel plate geometry of superfluid 3^3He-A phase. We examine the experimental setup in connection with ongoing rotating cryostat experiments. The theoretical analysis is based on the well-established Ginzburg--Landau functional, supplemented by microscopic calculations of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation, both of which allow the precise location of the parameter regions of the Majorana state to be found in realistic situations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Majorana surface states of superfluid 3He A- and B-phases in a slab

    Motivated by experiments on the superfluid 3He confined in a thin slab, we design a concrete experimental setup for observing the Majorana surface states. We solve the quasi-classical Eilenberger equation, which is quantitatively reliable, to evaluate several quantities, such as local density of states (LDOS), mass current for the A-phase, and spin current for the B-phase. In connection with realistic slab samples, we consider the upper and lower surfaces and the side edges including the corners with several thicknesses. Consequently the influence on the Majorana zero modes from the spatial variation of l-vector for the A-phase in thick slabs and the energy splitting of the zero-energy quasi-particles for the B-phase confined in thin slabs are demonstrated. The corner of slabs in the B-phase is accompanied by the unique zero-energy LDOS of corner modes. On the basis of the quantitative calculation, we propose several feasible and verifiable experiments to check the existence of the Majorana surface states, such as the measurement of specific heat, edge current, and anisotropic spin susceptibility.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, published versio

    Dementia-specific risks of scabies: Retrospective epidemiologic analysis of an unveiled nosocomial outbreak in Japan from 1989-90

    Background: Although senile dementia patients in long-term care facilities are at leading risk of scabies, the epidemiologic characteristics of this disease have yet to be fully clarified. This study documents the findings of a ward-scale nosocomial outbreak in western Japan from 1989-90, for which permission to publish was only recently obtained. Methods: A retrospective epidemiologic study was performed to identify specific risk factors of scabies among patients with dementia. Analyses were based on a review of medical and nursing records. All inpatients in the affected ward at the time of the outbreak were included in the study. Observational and analytical approaches were employed to assess the findings. Results: Twenty of 65 inpatients in the ward met the case definition of scabies. The outbreak. lasted for almost 10 months and as a result, the spatial distribution of infections showed no localized patterns in the latter phase of the outbreak. The duration of illness significantly decreased after initiation of control measures (P = 0.0067). Movement without assistance (Odds Ratio [OR] = 11.3; 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 2.9,44.8) and moving beyond the room (but within the ward) (OR=4.1; 95% CI: 1.4, 12.5) were significantly associated with infection, while types of room (Western or Japanese) and sleeping arrangement (on beds or futons laid directly on the floor) appeared not to be risk factors. Conclusion: Univariate analysis demonstrated the importance of patients' behaviours during daily activities in controlling scabies among senile dementia patients. The findings also support previous evidence that catching scabies from fomites is far less common. Moreover, since cognitive disorders make it difficult for individuals to communicate and understand the implications of risky contacts as well as treatment method, and given the non-specific nature of individual contacts that are often unpredictable, real-time observations might help improve control practices. © 2005 Tsutsumi et al., licensee BioMed Central Ltd.published_or_final_versio

    Edge Current due to Majorana Fermions in Superfluid 3^3He A- and B-Phases

    We propose a method utilizing edge current to observe Majorana fermions in the surface Andreev bound state for the superfluid 3^3He A- and B-phases. The proposal is based on self-consistent analytic solutions of quasi-classical Green's function with an edge. The local density of states and edge mass current in the A-phase or edge spin current in the B-phase can be obtained from these solutions. The edge current carried by the Majorana fermions is partially cancelled by quasiparticles (QPs) in the continuum state outside the superfluid gap. QPs contributing to the edge current in the continuum state are distributed in energy even away from the superfluid gap. The effect of Majorana fermions emerges in the depletion of the edge current by temperature within a low-temperature range. The observations that the reduction in the mass current is changed by T2T^2-power in the A-phase and the reduction in the spin current is changed by T3T^3-power in the B-phase establish the existence of Majorana fermions.
