Six degree of freedom simulation system for evaluating automated rendezvous and docking spacecraft
Future logistics supply and servicing vehicles such as cargo transfer vehicles (CTV) must have full 6 degree of freedom (6DOF) capability in order to perform requisite rendezvous, proximity operations, and capture operations. The design and performance issues encountered when developing a 6DOF maneuvering spacecraft are very complex with subtle interactions which are not immediately obvious or easily anticipated. In order to deal with these complexities and develop robust maneuvering spacecraft designs, a simulation system and associated family of tools are used at TRW for generating and validating spacecraft performance requirements and guidance algorithms. An overview of the simulator and tools is provided. These are used by TRW for autonomous rendezvous and docking research projects including CTV studies

Out-of-pocket spending and financial burden among low income adults after Medicaid expansions in the United States: quasi-experimental difference-in-difference study.
OBJECTIVE:To examine the association between expansion of the Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act and changes in healthcare spending among low income adults during the first four years of the policy implementation (2014-17). DESIGN:Quasi-experimental difference-in-difference analysis to examine out-of-pocket spending and financial burden among low income adults after Medicaid expansions. SETTING:United States. PARTICIPANTS:A nationally representative sample of individuals aged 19-64 years, with family incomes below 138% of the federal poverty level, from the 2010-17 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES:Four annual healthcare spending outcomes: out-of-pocket spending; premium contributions; out-of-pocket plus premium spending; and catastrophic financial burden (defined as out-of-pocket plus premium spending exceeding 40% of post-subsistence income). P values were adjusted for multiple comparisons. RESULTS:37 819 adults were included in the study. Healthcare spending did not change in the first two years, but Medicaid expansions were associated with lower out-of-pocket spending (adjusted percentage change -28.0% (95% confidence interval -38.4% to -15.8%); adjusted absolute change -122 (£93; €110); adjusted P<0.001), lower out-of-pocket plus premium spending (-29.0% (-40.5% to -15.3%); -442; adjusted P<0.001), and lower probability of experiencing a catastrophic financial burden (adjusted percentage point change -4.7 (-7.9 to -1.4); adjusted P=0.01) in years three to four. No evidence was found to indicate that premium contributions changed after the Medicaid expansions. CONCLUSION:Medicaid expansions under the Affordable Care Act were associated with lower out-of-pocket spending and a lower likelihood of catastrophic financial burden for low income adults in the third and fourth years of the act's implementation. These findings suggest that the act has been successful nationally in improving financial risk protection against medical bills among low income adults
Demonstration of automated proximity and docking technologies
An autodock was demonstrated using straightforward techniques and real sensor hardware. A simulation testbed was established and validated. The sensor design was refined with improved optical performance and image processing noise mitigation techniques, and the sensor is ready for production from off-the-shelf components. The autonomous spacecraft architecture is defined. The areas of sensors, docking hardware, propulsion, and avionics are included in the design. The Guidance Navigation and Control architecture and requirements are developed. Modular structures suitable for automated control are used. The spacecraft system manager functions including configuration, resource, and redundancy management are defined. The requirements for autonomous spacecraft executive are defined. High level decisionmaking, mission planning, and mission contingency recovery are a part of this. The next step is to do flight demonstrations. After the presentation the following question was asked. How do you define validation? There are two components to validation definition: software simulation with formal and vigorous validation, and hardware and facility performance validated with respect to software already validated against analytical profile
Thruster configurations for maneuvering heavy payloads
The cargo transfer vehicle (CTV) will be required to perform six degree of freedom (6DOF) maneuvers while carrying a wide range of payloads varying from 100,000 lbm to no payload. The current baseline design configuration for the CTV uses a forward propulsion module (FPM) mounted in front of the payload and the CTV behind the payload so that the center of gravity (CG) of the combined stack is contained between the thruster sets. This allows for efficient rotation and translations of heavy payloads in all directions; however, the FPM is a costly item, so it is desirable to find design solutions which do not require the FPM. This presentation provides an overview of the work performed in analyzing the FPM requirements for the CTV. Specifically, key issues related to thruster configuration requirements for operating the CTV without the FPM, throughout the 100,000 lbm payload to no payload range, will be highlighted. In this study, only the reaction control system (RCS) thruster configurations are considered and the orbit adjust engines are not addressed. An important output of this study is the viable alternative thruster configurations which eliminate the need for the FPM. Initial results were derived using analytical techniques and simulation analysis tools. Results from the preliminary analysis were used as inputs for our 6DOF simulation. The 6DOF simulation was used to validate our design guidelines and to verify the performance of the thruster configurations
Hydrogen-Poor Disks in Compact X-Ray Binaries
We show that accretion disks in several compact X-ray binaries with
hydrogen-depleted donors are likely subject to a thermal ionization
instability, unless they are strongly irradiated. These disks are particularly
interesting in that their MHD-turbulent properties in the neutral phase may be

Identifying metabolites by integrating metabolome databases with mass spectrometry cheminformatics.
Novel metabolites distinct from canonical pathways can be identified through the integration of three cheminformatics tools: BinVestigate, which queries the BinBase gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) metabolome database to match unknowns with biological metadata across over 110,000 samples; MS-DIAL 2.0, a software tool for chromatographic deconvolution of high-resolution GC-MS or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS); and MS-FINDER 2.0, a structure-elucidation program that uses a combination of 14 metabolome databases in addition to an enzyme promiscuity library. We showcase our workflow by annotating N-methyl-uridine monophosphate (UMP), lysomonogalactosyl-monopalmitin, N-methylalanine, and two propofol derivatives
Estimated refractive index and solid density of DT, with application to hollow-microsphere laser targets
The literature values for the 0.55-m refractive index N of liquid and gaseous H and D are combined to yield the equation (N - 1) = [(3.15 +- 0.12) x 10]rho, where rho is the density in moles per cubic meter. This equation can be extrapolated to 300K for use on DT in solid, liquid, and gas phases. The equation is based on a review of solid-hydrogen densities measured in bulk and also by diffraction methods. By extrapolation, the estimated densities and 0.55-m refractive indices for DT are given. Radiation-induced point defects could possibly cause optical absorption and a resulting increased refractive index in solid DT and T. The effect of the DT refractive index in measuring glass and cryogenic DT laser targets is also described. (auth
