Lorentz-Lorenz Coefficient, Critical Point Constants, and Coexistence Curve of 1,1-Difluoroethylene
We report measurements of the Lorentz-Lorenz coefficient density dependence,
the critical temperature, and the critical density, of the fluid
1,1-difluoroethylene. Lorentz-Lorenz coefficient data were obtained by
measuring refractive index and density of the same fluid sample independently
of one another. Accurate determination of the Lorentz-Lorenz coefficient is
necessary for transformation of refractive index data into density data from
optics-based experiments on critical phenomena of fluid systems done with
different apparatus, with which independent measurement of the refractive indes
and density is not possible. Measurements were made along the coexistence curve
of the fluid and span the density range 0.01 to 0.80 g/cc. The Lorentz-Lorenz
coefficient results show a stronger density dependence along the coexistence
curve than previously observed in other fluids, with a monotonic decrease from
a density of about 0.2 g/cc onwards, and an overall variation of about 2.5% in
the density range studied. No anomaly in the Lorentz-Lorenz coefficient was
observed near the critical density. The critical temperature is measured at
Tc=(302.964+-0.002) K (29.814 C) and the measured critical density is

Central Corneal Thickness in Patients With Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Purpose: To compare the central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and control subjects. Methods: The CCT value (measured with ultrasound corneal pachymetry) of 130 eyes (130 patients, 1 eye from each patient) with neovascular AMD (AMD group) and 98 eyes (98 patients, 1 eye from each patient) of similar age, sex, and eye's axial length healthy control subjects (normal group) was compared. Results: The mean age (AMD group: 69.1 years vs. control group: 69.5 years, P = 0.81), sex (AMD group: 77 women, 59% vs. control group: 59 women, 60%, P = 0.77), and eye's axial length (AMD group: 25.05-mm vs. control group: 24.61-mm, P = 0.38) of patients with neovascular AMD and healthy control subjects were comparable. There were no statistically significant differences in the mean CCT measurements in the neovascular AMD group in comparison with the control group (549.44 vs. 544.35 mm, P = 0.11). Conclusions: CCT measurements do not differ in patients with neovascular AMD compared with healthy control subjects

One-year results of intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation (KeraRing) using femtosecond laser in patients with keratoconus.
To report the results of intrastromal corneal ring segment [ICRS] (KeraRing; Mediphacos, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) implantation using a femtosecond laser (IntraLase Corp, Irvine, California, USA) in keratoconic patients.
Retrospective, noncomparative, interventional study.
Thirty-two keratoconic patients (50 eyes) who underwent ICRS insertion using a femtosecond laser for channel creation and completed at least one year of follow-up were included in this study. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), refraction, topographic findings, and adverse events were assessed.
No intraoperative complications were demonstrated in this series of patients. At the first postoperative day, segment migration to the incision site was seen in three eyes (6%; early postoperative complication). To avoid melting, we repositioned the migrated segment away from the incision site. Serious second migration was not seen and we did not need to reposition any segment again. At the last postoperative examination, there was a statistically significant reduction in the spherical equivalent refractive error compared with that observed at the examination before implantation (mean +/- standard deviation, -5.62 +/- 4.15 diopters [D; range, -23.62 to 0.50 D] to -2.49 +/- 2.68 D [range, -11.12 to 3.5 D]; P < .001). The UCVA before implantation was 20/40 or worse in 47 eyes (94%; range, counting fingers to 20/30), whereas at the last follow-up examination, 14 (28%) of 50 eyes had a UCVA of 20/40 or better (range, counting fingers to 20/25). Nine eyes (18%) maintained the preimplantation BSCVA, whereas 39 eyes (68%) experienced a BSCVA gain of one to four lines at the last follow-up examination. Only in two eyes (4%; two patients) with advanced keratoconus (stage III) was there a decrease of up to two lines. Despite this deterioration in BSCVA, the patients did not want to remove the ICRSs, because there was an increase of UCVA. No late postoperative complications were observed during the follow-up period.
ICRS (KeraRing) implantation using femtosecond laser for tunnel creation is a minimally invasive procedure for improving visual acuity (both UCVA and BSCVA) in keratoconic patients
