[[abstract]]This study sought to evaluate the relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Background SCH may increase the risks of hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. The associations between SCH and all-cause or CVD mortality are uncertain, on the basis of the results of previous studies. Methods A baseline cohort of 115,746 participants without a history of thyroid disease, ≄20 years of age, was recruited in Taiwan. SCH was defined as a serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level of 5.0 to 19.96 mIU/l with normal total thyroxine concentrations. Euthyroidism was defined as a serum TSH level of 0.47 to 4.9 mIU/l. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to estimate the relative risks (RRs) of death from all-cause and CVD for adults with SCH during a 10-year follow-up period. Results There were 3,669 deaths during the follow-up period; 680 deaths were due to CVD. Compared with subjects with euthyroidism, after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, alcohol consumption, betel nut chewing, physical activity, income, and education level, the RRs (95% confidence interval) of deaths from all-cause and CVD among subjects with SCH were 1.30 (1.02 to 1.66), and 1.68 (1.02 to 2.76), respectively. Conclusions Adult Taiwanese with SCH had an increased risk for all-cause mortality and CVD death

The Relationship Between Information Transparency And The Informativeness Of Accounting Earnings

The issue of corporate governance has prompted calls for greater transparency and disclosure on companies around the world. As a result, a disclosure ranking system, Information Transparency and Disclosure Ranking System (ITDRS) was launched in Taiwan since 2003 by the request of Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation (TSEC). This paper examines the relationship between information transparency and the informativeness of accounting earnings. The empirical tests are conducted using TEJ database for firms listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange with fiscal year ends between 2003 and 2004. Empirical results indicate that, information transparency, measured by the ranking of ITDRS, reduces the informativeness of accounting earnings. However, if information transparency is measured by the ratio of long-term investment in stocks, evidences show higher earnings response coefficients (ERC) for the more transparent firms. The results suggest that accounting numbers are more useful or valuable than the ITDRS ranking results from investors’ perspective. It also suggests that the ITDRS may be not a good proxy for financial transparency

Simple and robust downstream purification process for cell-derived influenza vaccines

New emerging influenza viruses with pandemic potentials were occurred in recent years, e.g. H5N1 in 1997, H1N1 in 2009, and H7N9 in 2013. The demand of producing pandemic influenza vaccines for human use with quick supply is high. For the cell-based pandemic influenza vaccines, we proposed a flow-through chromatography purification process. This process has only involved few purification steps and is easy to operate. Vero- and MDCK- cell derived avian influenza viruses including H5N1 and H7N9 were purified efficiently by the process proposed. The presented purification process consisted of clarification, inactivation, concentration, anion exchange chromatography (Capto Q), size exclusion and adsorption chromatography (Capto Core 700), diafiltration and sterile filtration. In the chromatography steps, cell DNA and protein were removed remarkably, and the virus were flowed through these columns. The flow rate was set as fast as 250 cm/min. The loading volume of virus solution was up to 50 times of column volume (CV).The DNA was removed over 90% after using Capto Q column, and was further removed by Capto Core 700 column. The overall removal rate of cellular DNA was more than 99%. The HA recovery rates of H5N1 and H7N9 influenza virus from Vero and MDCK cells were 20 to 40%. The DNA concentration of all purified bulks met the regulatory requirement of 10ng per dose. The developed purification process is simple and efficient, and it is suitable for purification of various influenza virus strains and can be used for the pandemic influenza vaccine production

Autoimmunity-related demyelination in infection by Japanese encephalitis virus

    Get PDF
Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus is the most common cause of epidemic viral encephalitis in the world. The virus mainly infects neuronal cells and causes an inflammatory response after invasion of the parenchyma of the brain. The death of neurons is frequently observed, in which demyelinated axons are commonly seen. The mechanism that accounts for the occurrence of demyelination is ambiguous thus far. With a mouse model, the present study showed that myelin-specific antibodies appeared in sera, particularly in those mice with evident symptoms. Meanwhile, specific T cells proliferating in response to stimulation by myelin basic protein (MBP) was also shown in these mice. Taken together, our results suggest that autoimmunity may play an important role in the destruction of components, e.g., MBP, of axon-surrounding myelin, resulting in demyelination in the mouse brain after infection with the JE virus

Look, the World is Watching How We Treat Migrants! The Making of the Anti-Trafficking Legislation during the Ma Administration

Employing the spiral model, this research analyses how anti-human trafficking legislation was promulgated during the Ma Ying-jeou (Ma Yingjiu) presidency. This research found that the gov- ernment of Taiwan was just as accountable for the violation of mi- grants’ human rights as the exploitive placement agencies and abusive employers. This research argues that, given its reliance on the United States for political and security support, Taiwan has made great ef- forts to improve its human rights records and meet US standards for protecting human rights. The reform was a result of multilevel inputs, including US pressure and collaboration between transnational and domestic advocacy groups. A major contribution of this research is to challenge the belief that human rights protection is intrinsic to dem- ocracy. In the same light, this research also cautions against Taiwan’s subscription to US norms since the reform was achieved at the cost of stereotyping trafficking victimhood, legitimising state surveillance, and further marginalising sex workers
