Photoemission and x-ray absorption study of MgC_(1-x)Ni_3
We investigated electronic structure of MgC_(1-x)Ni_3 with photoemission and
x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Both results show that overall band structure is
in reasonable agreement with band structure calculations including the
existence of von Hove singularity (vHs)near E_F. However, we find that the
sharp vHs peak theoretically predicted near the E_F is substantially
suppressed. As for the Ni core level and absorption spectrum, there exist the
satellites of Ni 2p which have a little larger energy separation and reduced
intensity compared to the case of Ni-metal. These facts indicate that
correlation effects among Ni 3d electrons may be important to understand
various physical properties.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Cosmopolitan Risk Community and China's Climate Governance
Ulrich Beck asserts that global risks, such as climate change, generate a form of ‘compulsory cosmopolitanism’, which ‘glues’ various actors into collective action. Through an analysis of emerging ‘cosmopolitan risk communities’ in Chinese climate governance, this paper points out a ‘blind spot’ in the theorisation of cosmopolitan belonging and an associated inadequacy in explaining shifting power-relations. The paper addresses this problem by engaging with the intersectionality of the cosmopolitan space. It is argued that cosmopolitan belonging is a form of performative identity. Its key characteristic lies in a ‘liberating prerogative’, which enables individuals to participate in the solution of common problems creatively. It is this liberating prerogative that coerces the state out of political monopoly and marks the cosmopolitan moment
Prospects for terahertz imaging the human skin cancer with the help of gold-nanoparticles-based terahertz-to-infrared converter
The design is suggested, and possible operation parameters are discussed, of
an instrument to inspect a skin cancer tumour in the terahertz (THz) range,
transferring the image into the infrared (IR) and making it visible with the
help of standard IR camera. The central element of the device is the THz-to-IR
converter, a Teflon or silicon film matrix with embedded 8.5 nm diameter gold
nanoparticles. The use of external THz source for irradiating the biological
tissue sample is presumed. The converter's temporal characteristics enable its
performance in a real-time scale. The details of design suited for the
operation in transmission mode (in vitro) or on the human skin in reflection

Role of radiography, MRI and FDG-PET/CT in diagnosing, staging and therapeutical evaluation of patients with multiple myeloma
Multiple myeloma is a malignant B-cell neoplasm that involves the skeleton in approximately 80% of the patients. With an average age of 60 years and a 5-years survival of nearly 45% Brenner et al. (Blood 111:2516–2520, 35) the onset is to be classified as occurring still early in life while the disease can be very aggressive and debilitating. In the last decades, several new imaging techniques were introduced. The aim of this review is to compare the different techniques such as radiographic survey, multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI), fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography- (FDG-PET) with or without computed tomography (CT), and 99mTc-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) scintigraphy. We conclude that both FDG-PET in combination with low-dose CT and whole-body MRI are more sensitive than skeleton X-ray in screening and diagnosing multiple myeloma. WB-MRI allows assessment of bone marrow involvement but cannot detect bone destruction, which might result in overstaging. Moreover, WB-MRI is less suitable in assessing response to therapy than FDG-PET. The combination of PET with low-dose CT can replace the golden standard, conventional skeletal survey.
