Efficient loading of a He* magneto-optic trap using a liquid He cooled source
We report loading large numbers (up to 3Ć10ā¹) of metastable triplet helium atoms into a magneto-optical trap using an atomic beam derived from a liquid He (LHe) cooled dc discharge source. Moreover, we compare the effect of liquidNā cooling to LHe cooling the source and demonstrate that LHe cooling offers a significant increase in performance
Quantitative Flow Field Imaging about a Hydrophobic Sphere Impacting on a Free Surface
This fluid dynamics video shows the impact of a hydrophobic sphere impacting
a water surface. The sphere has a mass ratio of m* = 1.15, a wetting angle of
110 degrees, a diameter of 9.5 mm, and impacts the surface with a Froude number
of Fr = 9.2. The first sequence shows an impact of a sphere on the free surface
illustrating the formation of the splash crown and air cavity. The cavity grows
both in the axial and radial direction until it eventually collapses at a point
roughly half of the distance from the free surface to the sphere, which is
known as the pinch-off point. The second set of videos shows a sphere impacting
the free surface under the same conditions using Particle Image Velocimetry
(PIV) to quantify the flow field. A laser sheet illuminates the mid-plane of
the sphere, and the fluid is seeded with particles whose motion is captured by
a high-speed video camera. Velocity fields are then calculated from the images.
The video sequences from left to right depict the radial velocity, the axial
velocity, and the vorticity respectively in the flow field. The color bar on
the far left indicates the magnitude of the velocity and vorticity. All videos
were taken at 2610 fps and the PIV data was processed using a 16 x 16 window

Surface activation of Concorde by Be-7
Activation analysis of two airframe components from the Concorde aircraft has identified the presence of Be-7, a nuclide found by other investigators that was deposited on the forward edge of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) structure. The results of the Concorde analysis indicate that this phenomenon is very much a surface effect, and that the areal densities of the Be-7 are comparable to those found for LDEF. The collection of Be-7 by the aircraft must be greater than in the case of LDEF (since duration for which Concorde is accumulating the nuclide is shorter) and is of the order of 1.2 to 41 nuclei/sq cm(-)s(exp -1) depending upon assumptions made regarding the altitude at which collection becomes appreciable, and the efficiency of the process which removes the radionuclide
The coverage and frequency of mass drug administration required to eliminate persistent transmission of soil-transmitted helminths
A combination of methods, including mathematical model construction, demographic plus epidemiological data analysis and parameter estimation, are used to examine whether mass drug administration (MDA) alone can eliminate the transmission of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). Numerical analyses suggest that in all but low transmission settings (as defined by the magnitude of the basic reproductive number, R0), the treatment of pre-school-aged children (pre-SAC) and school-aged children (SAC) is unlikely to drive transmission to a level where the parasites cannot persist. High levels of coverage (defined as the fraction of an age group effectively treated) are required in pre-SAC, SAC and adults, if MDA is to drive the parasite below the breakpoint under which transmission is eliminated. Long-term solutions to controlling helminth infections lie in concomitantly improving the quality of the water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). MDA, however, is a very cost-effective tool in long-term control given that most drugs are donated free by the pharmaceutical industry for poor regions of the world. WASH interventions, by lowering the basic reproductive number, can facilitate the ability of MDA to interrupt transmission
A General Tank Test of a Model of the Hull of the British Singapore IIC Flying Boat
A general test was made in the N.A.C.A. tank of a 1/12-size model of the hull of the British Singapore IIC flying boat loaned by the Director of Research, British Air Ministry. The results are given in charts and are compared with the results of tests of a model of an American flying-boat hull, the Sikorsky S-40. The Singapore hull has a greater hump resistance but a much lower high-speed resistance than the S-40
A Comparison of the Results from General Tank Tests of 1/6- and 1/12-full-size Models of the British Singapore IIC Flying Boat
A 1/6-full-size model of the hull of the British Singapore IIC flying boat was tested in the NACA tank. The results are given in the form of charts and are compared with the results of previous tests made in the NACA tank of a 1/12-full-size model, published in NACA T.N. No. 580, and with the results of tests made in the British R.A.E. tank of another 1/6-full-size model of the same hull. When the data from the tests of the 1/6- and 1/12-full-size models were compared on the basis of Froude's law of comparison, differences were found. This fact supported the belief that the small scale of the model and the use of a model that was too small to suit the equipment of the NACA tank had caused the results of the tests of the 1/12-full-size model to be less reliable than the results of the tests of the 1/6-full-size model. The results of the tests of the two models agreed sufficiently well to show that test of a small model, if made meticulously and with suitable equipment, may give useable results, but that a larger model should be used whenever feasible. The results of the NACA tests of the 1/6-full-size model were found to be in good agreement with the R.A.E. tests of a model of the same size
Developing Interventions for Children's Exercise (DICE): a pilot evaluation of school-based exercise interventions for primary school children aged 7 to 8 years.
BACKGROUND: Developing Interventions for Children's Exercise (DICE) is an initiative aimed at determining effective school-based exercise programs. To assess feasibility, we conducted a pilot study of exercise sessions which varied in duration and frequency. METHODS: Exercise interventions were delivered to Year 3 pupils (age 7-8 years; n = 73) in primary schools within Yorkshire, UK. Evaluations were conducted using focus group sessions, questionnaires and observations. RESULTS: The study revealed positive aspects of all interventions, including favorable effects on children's concentration during lessons and identified the value of incorporation of the DICE concept into curriculum lessons. Children appeared enthused and reported well-being and enjoyment. Areas requiring attention were the need for appropriate timetabling of sessions and ensuring the availability of space. CONCLUSION: The concept and sessions were well-accepted by teachers who confirmed their full support of any future implementation There appears to be potential for the encouragement and empowerment of teachers to support physical activity and healthy school environments, and to take an interest in the health of their pupils. Ultimately, these findings should assist in the design of successful exercise interventions in the school setting
Implicit Theories of Learning as Reflected in One Upper Elementary Teacher\u27s Talk
Strong empirical evidence exists indicating language can influence studentsā beliefs about ability. Professional literature for teachers offers practical advice on how to adjust their classroom-based talk to support student achievement by orienting students toward an incremental theory of ability. Yet, little empirical work has been done to investigate how teacher talk plays out moment-to-moment within the classroom context. This study reports on a qualitative analysis of one upper elementary teacher\u27s talk with regard to implicit theories of learning. Findings suggest teacher talk is dynamic and overlapping, operating along a continuum from entity-oriented talk to incremental-oriented talk across varied classroom situations. Additionally, a relationship was identified between teacher autonomy and the implicit theories of learning used in the teacherās talk. Examples of varied teacher talk during classroom activities are presented, and scholarly and practical implications for language use, learning, and instruction are included
Paired atom laser beams created via four-wave mixing
A method to create paired atom laser beams from a metastable helium atom
laser via four-wave mixing is demonstrated. Radio frequency outcoupling is used
to extract atoms from a Bose Einstein condensate near the center of the
condensate and initiate scattering between trapped and untrapped atoms. The
unequal strengths of the interactions for different internal states allows an
energy-momentum resonance which leads to the creation of pairs of atoms
scattered from the zero-velocity condensate. The resulting scattered beams are
well separated from the main atom laser in the 2-dimensional transverse atom
laser profile. Numerical simulations of the system are in good agreement with
the observed atom laser spatial profiles, and indicate that the scattered beams
are generated by a four-wave mixing process, suggesting that the beams are
