Three-dimensional pattern formation, multiple homogeneous soft modes, and nonlinear dielectric electroconvection

Patterns forming spontaneously in extended, three-dimensional, dissipative systems are likely to excite several homogeneous soft modes (\approx hydrodynamic modes) of the underlying physical system, much more than quasi one- and two-dimensional patterns are. The reason is the lack of damping boundaries. This paper compares two analytic techniques to derive the patten dynamics from hydrodynamics, which are usually equivalent but lead to different results when applied to multiple homogeneous soft modes. Dielectric electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals is introduced as a model for three-dimensional pattern formation. The 3D pattern dynamics including soft modes are derived. For slabs of large but finite thickness the description is reduced further to a two-dimensional one. It is argued that the range of validity of 2D descriptions is limited to a very small region above threshold. The transition from 2D to 3D pattern dynamics is discussed. Experimentally testable predictions for the stable range of ideal patterns and the electric Nusselt numbers are made. For most results analytic approximations in terms of material parameters are given.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figure

The objective of our research was to investigate the asymmetry of motor syndromes in patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). 230 consecutive patients with idiopathic PD were questioned at time of routine clinic visits. PD was characterized by an asymmetric onset (99,57 %) and an asymmetric disease progression (95,22 %). According to PD progression the severity of motor syndromes was usually predominant on the side of motor onset. The frequency of PD motor onset on the dominant side of the body was significantly exceeded than on the subdominant side (62,61 % vs. 36,52 %, p<0,001). There was more pronounced motor asymmetry in PD patients with motor onset on the subdominant side of the body as compared to PD patients with motor onset on the dominant side (p<0,007).

The article provides a detailed description of the clinical case of chorea-acanthocytosis diagnosed on the basis of Department of Neurology No. 1 of Kyiv Regional Clinical Hospital. Chorea-acanthocytosis is a rare autosomal recessive hereditary progressive neurological disease characterized by progressive hyperkinesis (chorea and dystonia), mental disorders and the presence of acanthocytes (erythrocytes with a few spicules of varying size). Sometimes parkinsonism, seizures, mild neuropathic and myopathic disorders, and cardiomyopathy can be seen [2, 4]. The disease runs in chronic progressive course and is eventually fatal. Treatment is limited to symptomatic therapies [2, 3, 4].

The role of two-pore channels in norepinephrine-induced [Ca2+]i rise in rat aortic smooth muscle cells and aorta contraction.

open access journalSecond messenger nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP) triggers Ca2+ release via two-pore channels (TPCs) localized in endolysosomal vesicles. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the role of TPCs in the action of norepinephrine (NE), angiotensin II (AngII), vasopressin (AVP), and 5-hydroxytriptamine (5-HT) on free cytoplasmic calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) isolated from rat aorta and on aorta contraction. To address this issue, the NAADP structural analogue and inhibitor of TPCs, NED 19, was applied. We have demonstrated a high degree of colocalization of the fluorescent signals of cis-NED 19 and endolysosmal probe LysoTracker in SMCs. Both cis- or trans-NED 19 inhibited the rise of [Ca2+]i in SMCs induced by 100 M NE by 50–60%. IC50 for cis- and trans-NED 19 were 2.7 and 8.9 M, respectively. The inhibition by NED 19 stereoisomers of the e ects of AngII, AVP, and 5-HT was much weaker. Both forms of NED 19 caused relaxation of aortic rings preconstricted by NE, with relative potency of cis-NED 19 several times higher than that of trans-NED 19. Inhibition by cis-NED 19 of NE-induced contraction was maintained after intensive washing and slowly reversed within an hour of incubation. Cis- and trans-NED 19 did not cause decrease in the force of aorta contraction in response to Ang II and AVP, and only slightly relaxed aorta preconstricted by 5-HT and by KCl. Suppression of TPC1 in SMCs with siRNA caused a 40% decrease in [Ca2+]i in response to NE, whereas siRNA against TPC2 did not change NE calcium signaling. These data suggest that TPC1 is involved in the NE-stimulated [Ca2+]i rise in SMCs. Inhibition of TPC1 activity by NED 19 could be the reason for partial inhibition of aortic rings contraction in response to NE

A FIND OF THE NORTH-CAUCASIAN CERAMICS IN THE ELITE BURIAL OF THE ISAKOVKA I BURIAL GROUND (WESTERN SIBERIA)

We present the results of a multi-disciplinary analysis of a jug and its contents from the elite burial complex of the Sargat culture in Middle Irtysh Basin (burial Isakovka I, mound 3, burial 6). The burial, along with military equipment and various metallic import, contained a ceramic jug, the closest analogies to which are found in the production centers of the settled population of the foothill zone of the central and partially eastern regions of the North Caucasus, as well as the steppe territory (the basin of the Kuma River). The studied piece is distinguished by its massive form and traces of repair of the upper part. The jug was placed in the burial filled with a granular substance with fragments of light and gray-black color. Laboratory analysis found no traces of tartrates, i.e. the jug was not used for cooking or transporting beverages of grape juice. The detected fractions of biogenic apatite could possibly originate from fish bones and scales, used for the production of glue, which was added for clarification of wine, beer and mead. At the same time, the composition of the filling contains organic substances related to the production of a low-alcohol drink based on honey, fermented with the addition of cereal grains (local wild or coming from agricultural centers). There are two versions for defining this drink: either it was beer – one of the oldest ritual drinks, the use of which in pastoral cultures is confirmed by texts of the Nart sagas and is confirmed by similar forms of words of Iranian origin; or an infusion of herbs/cereals based on honey, also common in the ritual practices of ancient and traditional cultures. This find is considered exceptional, since the North Caucasian antiquities of the Early Iron Age have been previously unknown in the forest-steppe monuments of the Trans-Urals and Western Siberia. It is possible that the area of the Sargat culture is so far the easternmost territory of distribution of such ceramics. © 2022 Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of SciencesRussian Foundation for Basic Research, РФФИ; Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Minobrnauka: 075-15-2021-680; Ural Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, UB RAS: АААА-А18-118053090045-8Acknowledgment.
