Narrative Identity against Biographical Illusion: The Shift in Sociology from Bourdieu to RicƓur

    Get PDF
Since the publication of Oneself as Another, many sociologists have referred to the work of Paul RicƓur, some of them considering his notion of narrative identity to be a useful means of analyzing some aspects individual identity left unresolved by Bourdieu’s notion of habitus. Bourdieu had, however, already discredited the sociological relevance of the notion of narrative in his 1986 article “The Biographical Illusion.” Through a careful re-reading of both texts, this article will determine to what extent the sociological use of RicƓur’s notions can escape the confines of Bourdieu’s analysis and, moreover, the different conceptions of the human being and of ethics underlying the two distinct frameworks of analysis.

    March 11 as a New September 11

The Madrid bombings of March 11, 2004, were immediately hailed as a ‘new September 11.’ This article seeks to determine whether this analogy is also pertinent to the photographic coverage of the two events. It is based on the statistical treatment of a sample of 248 photographs that were featured on the day following the attacks on the front pages of newspapers in Spain, the rest of the Europe, and the United States. As in the case of September 11, the entire body of these photographs can ultimately be reduced to six ‘images-types’ or ‘master images’ that were endlessly repeated. But the relative frequency of each of them and the actual photographs most widely reproduced vary from one geographical area to another. This is especially the case for images of the dead and wounded, which were much more visible in Spain than in the United States. This observation then becomes an occasion to identify the effects of globalization on the distribution of news photographs in the United States and Europe, as well as to explore the journalistic practices and types of intericonicity that lead to different ways of photographically representing death

Even if various authors contributed to sociology as well as to theology, nothing like a “sociology of theology” exists. The aim of this article is to offer a rereading of La topographie lĂ©gendaire des Ă©vangiles en Terre sainte by Maurice Halbwachs, in order to show that this book is not only a study of sociology of memory but also an outline of a sociology of theology. After having defined in what extent we can find a study of “the social construction of the Christian thought” in Halbwachs’ work, we turn to the way he analyses the production process of the theological orthodoxy, and then to the specificity of the sociological point of view on theological questions. Finally, the conclusion gives us the occasion to underline what the sociology of theology could bring to sociology itself.

Paris and Nice terrorist attacks: Exploring Twitter and web archives

    Get PDF
International audienceThe attacks suffered by France in January and November 2015, and then in the course of 2016, especially the Nice attack, provoked intense online activity both during the events and in the months that followed. The digital traces left by this reactivity and reactions to events gave rise, from the very first days and even hours after the attacks, to a 'real-time' institutional archiving by the National Library of France (BibliothĂšque nationale de France, BnF) and the National Audiovisual Institute (Institut national de l'audiovisuel, Ina). The results amount to millions of archived tweets and URLs. This article seeks to highlight some of the most significant issues raised by these relatively unedited corpora, from collection to exploitation, online stream of data to its mediation and re-composition. Indeed, Web archiving practices in times of emergency and crises are significant, almost emblematic, loci to explore the human and technical agencies, and the complex temporalities, of 'born-digital' heritage. The cases examined here emphasize the way these "emergency collections" challenge the perimeters and the very nature of Web archives as part of our digital and societal heritage, and the guiding visions of its governance and mission. Finally, the present analysis emphasizes the need for a careful contextualisation of the design process-both of original web pages or tweets and of their archived images-and of the tools deployed to collect, retrieve and analyse them
