Electronic Structure of Calcium Hexaboride within the Weighted Density Approximation

We report calculations of the electronic structure of CaB6_6 using the weighted density approximation (WDA) to density functional theory. We find a semiconducting band structure with a sizable gap, in contrast to local density approximation (LDA) results, but in accord with recent experimental data. In particular, we find an XX-point band gap of 0.8 eV. The WDA correction of the LDA error in describing the electronic structure of CaB6_6 is discussed in terms of the orbital character of the bands and the better cancelation of self-interactions within the WDA.Comment: 1 figur

Puddle formation and persistent gaps across the non-mean-field breakdown of superconductivity in overdoped (Pb,Bi)2Sr2CuO6+<i>δ</i>

The cuprate high-temperature superconductors exhibit many unexplained electronic phases, but the superconductivity at high doping is often believed to be governed by conventional mean-field Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory. However, it was shown that the superfluid density vanishes when the transition temperature goes to zero, in contradiction to expectations from Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory. Our scanning tunnelling spectroscopy measurements in the overdoped regime of the (Pb,Bi)2Sr2CuO6+δ high-temperature superconductor show that this is due to the emergence of nanoscale superconducting puddles in a metallic matrix. Our measurements further reveal that this puddling is driven by gap filling instead of gap closing. The important implication is that it is not a diminishing pairing interaction that causes the breakdown of superconductivity. Unexpectedly, the measured gap-to-filling correlation also reveals that pair breaking by disorder does not play a dominant role and that the mechanism of superconductivity in overdoped cuprate superconductors is qualitatively different from conventional mean-field theory.</p

Influence of ion assisted deposition on interface broadening in Fe/Al multilayers investigated by medium energy ion scattering

Trilayers of Al/Fe/Al and Al/Fe multilayers produced by magnetron sputtering both with and without ion assistance have been depth profiled using Auger electron spectroscopy and medium energy ion scattering. Important differences are observed in the layer structure, with ion assisted deposition giving the narrowest Al/Fe interfaces and so maintaining the most clearly defined layer structure. Both types of sputtering result in some oxygen contamination, particularly at the surface that modeling shows to be associated with the Al layers

3D manufacturing of intracranial aneurysm biomodels for flow visualizations: Low cost fabrication processes

There is a continuous search for better and more complete in vitro models with mechanical properties closer to in vivo conditions. In this work a manufacturing process, based on a lost core casting technique, is herein reported to produce aneurysm biomodels to perform experimental hemodynamic studies. By using real artery images combined with a lost core casting technique, three materials were tested: paraffin, beeswax and glycerin-based soap. All in vitro biomodels were compared according to their transparency and final structure. Additionally, comparisons between experimental and numerical flow studies were also performed. The results have shown that the biomodels produced with beeswax and glycerine-based soap were the most suitable in vitro models to perform direct flow visualizations of particulate blood analogue fluids. The biomodels proposed in this works, have the potential to provide further insights into the complex blood flow phenomena happening at different kinds of pathologies and answer to important hemodynamics questions that otherwise cannot be tackled with the existing in vitro modelsFCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/2020, UIDB/04077/2020, UIDB/00690/2020 and NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-030171, funded by COMPETE2020, NORTE 2020, PORTUGAL 2020 and FEDER, R.A and C.F.acknowledge the support of Junta de Extremadura through Grants GR18175 and IB16119 (partially financed by FEDER) This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 798014.
