Feuille de route et droits de la défense : les enquêtes défensives à l’étranger

The Italian criminal law system, unlike the systems in many other European countries, allows the defense to carry out defensive investigations on behalf of his/her client. In this contribution, the shortcomings of the recent European legislation on the matter are analyzed, as well as the issue of the validity in Italian criminal proceedings of defensive investigations conducted by the defense council abroad. The admissibility in the criminal case of defensive investigations conducted abroad by an Italian defense lawyer was, in fact, already rejected ten years ago by the Italian Court of Cassation. The Court stated that the official state instruments of international mutual legal assistance in criminal matters must be used if investigations are carried out abroad. The authors argue in this contribution that this position cannot be upheld in a unified Europe and deserves fundamental reconsideration. They also advocate a European solution of defensive investigations abroad \u2013 a possible topic for a new EU roadmap on defensive rights

Design and analysis of activation strategies for adaptive notch filters to suppress GNSS jamming

    No full text
Adaptive notch filters (ANFs) have been widely investigated in literature for their low complexity and good performance, and used in many signal processing applications. More recently, they have been proven to be an effective solution against jamming interferences, considered more than ever a real threat to Global Navigation Satellite System signals. This article focuses on a specific family of ANF, where the adaptation algorithm is implemented as a frequency-lock-loop (FLL), namely FLL-equivalent ANFs. It presents the theoretical derivation of two detection approaches, namely power ratio-based and gradient-based, in charge of activating/deactivating such kind of filters. Both the theoretical and statistical analysis in case of swept-frequency jamming signals are provided. The performance evaluation for several interference-to-noise ratio conditions shows a tradeoff between the two solutions, with a slight advantage of the power ratio-based strategy. The results achieved in simulation clearly demonstrate that the proposed activation strategies can be combined with ANFs and that they can be effectively adopted for the mitigation of jamming signals

N-FUELS and SOPRANO: Educational Tools for Simulation, Analysis and Processing of Satellite Navigation Signals

    No full text
In recent years, research activities in the field of Satellite Navigation have boosted worldwide. At the same time, it has become evident that few educational opportunities in the field were available for students and there was a need to develop dedicated tools for hands-on sessions. To partially answer this need, the NavSAS Group has developed N-FUELS and SOPRANO. N-FUELS, a MATLAB-based signal simulator, allows students to understand the physical layer of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals and to learn how to manipulate them via software. SOPRANO, a collection of ANSI C language routines, implements the whole chain of GNSS signal elaboration in post-processing and enables testing and validation of new GNSS signal processing algorithms and architectures. Both tools are used in post-graduate courses at Politecnico di Torino with a high degree of internationalization, which opens interesting points of discussion concerning the introduction of novel educational tools able to meet the demand and the learning styles of students with different educational backgrounds and cultures

Microscopic Proof of Photoluminescence from Mechanochemically Synthesized 1-Octene-Capped Quantum-Confined Silicon Nanoparticles: Implications for Light-Emission Applications

    No full text
Silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) have been explored intensively for their use in applications requiring efficient fluorescence for LEDs, lasers, displays, photovoltaic spectral-shifting filters, and biomedical applications. High radiative rates are essential for such applications, and theoretically these could be achieved via quantum confinement and/or straining. Wet-chemical methods used to synthesize SiNPs are under scrutiny because of reported contamination by fluorescent carbon species. To develop a cleaner method, we utilize a specially designed attritor type high-energy ball-mill and use a high-purity (99.999%) Si microparticle precursor. The mechanochemical process is used under a continuous nitrogen gas atmosphere to avoid oxidation of the particles. We confirm the presence of quantum-confined NPs
