International audienceLower space requirement, simple operation and economical aspects as well as landscape integration make decentralized natural sanitation systems necessary in eco-city construction. This paper focuses on water management through natural and alternative solutions in urban and peri-urban areas. Results and efficiency of raw wastewater by decentralized natural systems, intelligent storm water management and reuse of treated water in urban irrigation are discussed. Several full scale examples are presented regarding to their removal efficiency and environmental benefits. Their contribution in climate change mitigation is presented as a necessity in today's eco-city conception

Simulation of blended nonlinear hydrodynamics forces using radial basis function in uniform moving frame

This study focuses on the development of a blended technique in moving frame which encompasses nonlinearities and real time simulation of the vital early design parameters using combined exact nonlinear and quasi-nonlinear forcing terms. Generally, a full three-dimensional problem needs to be solved for the precise forward speed correction. However, in this paper the forward speed end corrections are calculated by converting the two dimensional velocity potential into a three dimensional mathematical function using radial basis function then partial differentiation is performed with respect to the longitudinal direction. The difference between the forward speed correction used for time simulation in the blended method and the strip-theory in the frequency domain has been explained. The use of radial basis functions for the estimation of quasi-nonlinear combined radiation and diffraction pressures in moving frame and their conversion between two and three dimensions has been demonstrated and validated experimentally

Eigenvalue Problem in Two Dimension for An Irregular Boundary

An analytical perturbative method is suggested for solving the Helmholtz equation (\bigtriangledown^{2} + k^{2}){\psi} = 0 in two dimensions where {\psi} vanishes on an irregular closed curve. We can thus find the energy levels of a quantum mechanical particle confined in an infinitely deep potential well in two dimensions having an irregular boundary or the vibration frequencies of a membrane whose edge is an irregular closed curve. The method is tested by calculating the energy levels for an elliptical and a supercircular boundary and comparing with the results obtained numerically. Further, the phenomenon of level crossing due to shape variation is also discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, v2 matches the journal versio

Structural Basis for Broad Neutralization of Hepatitis C Virus Quasispecies

Monoclonal antibodies directed against hepatitis C virus (HCV) E2 protein can neutralize cell-cultured HCV and pseudoparticles expressing envelopes derived from multiple HCV subtypes. For example, based on antibody blocking experiments and alanine scanning mutagenesis, it was proposed that the AR3B monoclonal antibody recognized a discontinuous conformational epitope comprised of amino acid residues 396–424, 436–447, and 523–540 of HCV E2 envelope protein. Intriguingly, one of these segments (436–447) overlapped with hypervariable region 3 (HVR3), a domain that exhibited significant intrahost and interhost genetic diversity. To reconcile these observations, amino-acid sequence variability was examined and homology-based structural modelling of E2 based on tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) E protein was performed based on 413 HCV sequences derived from 18 subjects with chronic hepatitis C. Here we report that despite a high degree of amino-acid sequence variability, the three-dimensional structure of E2 is remarkably conserved, suggesting broad recognition of structural determinants rather than specific residues. Regions 396–424 and 523–540 were largely exposed and in close spatial proximity at the surface of E2. In contrast, region 436–447, which overlaps with HVR3, was >35 Å away, and estimates of buried surface were inconsistent with HVR3 being part of the AR3B binding interface. High-throughput structural analysis of HCV quasispecies could facilitate the development of novel vaccines that target conserved structural features of HCV envelope and elicit neutralizing antibody responses that are less vulnerable to viral escape

Assessment of iron bioavailability from different bread making processes using an in vitro intestinal cell model

Myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6), is the main iron chelator in cereals and bread. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of three commercial baking processes (sourdough, conventional yeast and Chorleywood Bread Making Process (CBP)) on the IP6 content of wholemeal bread, its impact on iron uptake in Caco-2 cells and the predicted bioavailability of iron from these breads with added iron, simulating a mixed-meal. The sourdough process fully degraded IP6 whilst the CBP and conventional processes reduced it by 75% compared with wholemeal flour. The iron released in solution after a simulated digestion was 8-fold higher in sourdough bread than with others but no difference in cellular iron uptake was observed. Additionally, when iron was added to the different breads digestions only sourdough bread elicited a significant ferritin response in Caco-2 cells (4.8-fold compared to the other breads) suggesting that sourdough bread could contribute towards improved iron nutrition

Eigenvalue Problem in Two Dimensions for an Irregular Boundary II: Neumann Condition

We formulate a systematic elegant perturbative scheme for determining the eigenvalues of the Helmholtz equation (\bigtriangledown^{2} + k^{2}){\psi} = 0 in two dimensions when the normal derivative of {\psi} vanishes on an irregular closed curve. Unique feature of this method, unlike other perturbation schemes, is that it does not require a separate formalism to treat degeneracies. Degenerate states are handled equally elegantly as the non-degenerate ones. A real parameter, extracted from the parameters defining the irregular boundary, serves as a perturbation parameter in this scheme as opposed to earlier schemes where the perturbation parameter is an artificial one. The efficacy of the proposed scheme is gauged by calculating the eigenvalues for elliptical and supercircular boundaries and comparing with the results obtained numerically. We also present a simple and interesting semi-empirical formula, determining the eigenspectrum of the 2D Helmholtz equation with the Dirichlet or the Neumann condition for a supercircular boundary. A comparison of the eigenspectrum for several low-lying modes obtained by employing the formula with the corresponding numerical estimates shows good agreement for a wide range of the supercircular exponent.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figure
