    Single spin Toffoli-Fredkin logic gate

    The Toffoli–Fredkin (TF) gate is a universal reversible logic gate capable of performing logic operations without dissipating energy. Here, we show that a linear array of three quantum dots, each hosting a single electron, can realize the TF gate, if we encode logic bits in the spin polarization of the electrons and allow nearest neighbor exchange coupling. The dynamics of the TF gate is realized by selectively driving spin resonances in the coupled spin system with an acmagnetic field. The conditions for gate operation are established, and an estimate of the switching speed and gate error are provided

    Containing Analog Data Deluge at Edge through Frequency-Domain Compression in Collaborative Compute-in-Memory Networks

    Edge computing is a promising solution for handling high-dimensional, multispectral analog data from sensors and IoT devices for applications such as autonomous drones. However, edge devices' limited storage and computing resources make it challenging to perform complex predictive modeling at the edge. Compute-in-memory (CiM) has emerged as a principal paradigm to minimize energy for deep learning-based inference at the edge. Nevertheless, integrating storage and processing complicates memory cells and/or memory peripherals, essentially trading off area efficiency for energy efficiency. This paper proposes a novel solution to improve area efficiency in deep learning inference tasks. The proposed method employs two key strategies. Firstly, a Frequency domain learning approach uses binarized Walsh-Hadamard Transforms, reducing the necessary parameters for DNN (by 87% in MobileNetV2) and enabling compute-in-SRAM, which better utilizes parallelism during inference. Secondly, a memory-immersed collaborative digitization method is described among CiM arrays to reduce the area overheads of conventional ADCs. This facilitates more CiM arrays in limited footprint designs, leading to better parallelism and reduced external memory accesses. Different networking configurations are explored, where Flash, SA, and their hybrid digitization steps can be implemented using the memory-immersed scheme. The results are demonstrated using a 65 nm CMOS test chip, exhibiting significant area and energy savings compared to a 40 nm-node 5-bit SAR ADC and 5-bit Flash ADC. By processing analog data more efficiently, it is possible to selectively retain valuable data from sensors and alleviate the challenges posed by the analog data deluge.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2307.03863, arXiv:2309.0177

    Melatonin blocks inhibitory effects of prolactin on photoperiodic induction of gain in body mass, testicular growth and feather regeneration in the migratory male redheaded bunting (Emberiza bruniceps)

    Little is known about how hormones interact in the photoperiodic induction of seasonal responses in birds. In this study, two experiments determined if the treatment with melatonin altered inhibitory effects of prolactin on photoperiodic induction of seasonal responses in the Palearctic-Indian migratory male redheaded bunting Emberiza bruniceps. Each experiment employed three groups (N = 6–7 each) of photosensitive birds that were held under 8 hours light: 16 hours darkness (8L:16D) since early March. In the experiment 1, beginning in mid June 2001, birds were exposed to natural day lengths (NDL) at 27 degree North (day length = ca.13.8 h, sunrise to sunset) for 23 days. In the experiment 2, beginning in early April 2002, birds were exposed to 14L:10D for 22 days. Beginning on day 4 of NDL or day 1 of 14L:10D, they received 10 (experiment 1) or 13 (experiment 2) daily injections of both melatonin and prolactin (group 1) or prolactin alone (group 2) at a dose of 20 microgram per bird per day in 200 microliter of vehicle. Controls (group 3) received similar volume of vehicle. Thereafter, birds were left uninjected for the next 10 (experiment 1) or 9 days (experiment 2). All injections except those of melatonin were made at the zeitgeber time 10 (ZT 0 = time of sunrise, experiment 1; time of lights on, experiment 2); melatonin was injected at ZT 9.5 and thus 0.5 h before prolactin. Observations were recorded on changes in body mass, testicular growth and feather regeneration. Under NDL (experiment 1), testis growth in birds that received melatonin 0.5 h prior to prolactin (group 1) was significantly greater (P < 0.05, Student Newman-Keuls test) than in those birds that received prolactin alone (group 2) or vehicle (group 3). Although mean body mass of three groups were not significantly different at the end of the experiment, the regeneration of papillae was dramatically delayed in prolactin only treated group 2 birds. Similarly, under 14L:10D (experiment 2) testes of birds receiving melatonin plus prolactin (group 1) and vehicle (group 3) were significantly larger (P < 0.05, Student Newman-Keuls test) than those receiving prolactin alone (group 2). Also, birds of groups 1 and 3, but not of group 2, had significant (P < 0.05, 1-way repeated measures Analysis of Variance) gain in body mass. However, unlike in the experiment 1, the feather regeneration in birds of the three groups was not dramatically different; a relatively slower rate of papillae emergence was however noticed in group 2 birds. Considered together, these results show that a prior treatment with melatonin blocks prolactin-induced suppression of photoperiodic induction in the redheaded bunting, and suggest an indirect role of melatonin in the regulation of seasonal responses of birds

    Natural daylight restricted to twilights delays the timing of testicular regression but does not affect the timing of the daily activity rhythm of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus)

    BACKGROUND: A stable and systematic daily change in light levels at dawn and dusk provides the most reliable indicator of the phase of the day. It is likely that organisms have evolved mechanisms to use these twilight transitions as the primary zeitgeber to adjust their circadian phases. In this study, we investigated under natural illumination conditions the effects of daylight exposure restricted to twilights on the timing of testicular regression and locomotor activity of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus), which possesses a strongly self-sustaining circadian system. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two experiments were performed on adult male house sparrows. Beginning in the third week of April, the first experiment examined whether exposure to natural daylight only during twilights influenced the timing of testicular regression and concomitant changes in testosterone-dependent beak color of reproductively mature sparrows. Interestingly, there was a significant delay in testicular regression and depigmentation of the beak in sparrows exposed to natural daylight (NDL) only during twilights as compared to those exposed to NDL all day. The second experiment examined twice in the year, around the equinoxes (March and September), the effects of exposure to twilights only on the daily activity rhythm of sparrows kept in an outdoor aviary. Five of 7 birds continued exhibiting entrained activity rhythms when exposed only to twilights (NDL minus day light from sunrise to sunset) in September, but not in March. Both in NDL and twilight conditions, March birds had significantly lower activity counts than September birds. CONCLUSION: Exposure to natural daylight only during twilights delayed the timing of testicular regression and concomitant depigmentation of the beak but did not affect the daily activity rhythm in male sparrows. This suggests that daily twilights can serve as cues for regulation of the circadian activity rhythm but not for the photoperiodic regulation of testicular cycle in the house sparrow

    Control of annual reproductive cycle in the subtropical house sparrow (Passer domesticus): evidence for conservation of photoperiodic control mechanisms in birds

    BACKGROUND: In many birds, day length (=photoperiod) regulates reproductive cycle. The photoperiodic environment varies between different seasons and latitudes. As a consequence, species at different latitudes may have evolved separate photoperiodic strategies or modified them as per their adaptive need. We studied this using house sparrow as a model since it is found worldwide and is widely investigated. In particular, we examined whether photoperiodism in house sparrows (Passer domesticus) at 27°N, 81°E shared features with those exhibited by its conspecifics at high latitudes. RESULTS: Initial experiment described in the wild and captive conditions the gonad development and molt (only in captives) cycles over a 12-month period. Both male and female sparrows had similar seasonal cycles, linked with annual variations in day length; this suggested that seasonal reproduction in house sparrows was under the photoperiodic control. However, a slower testis and attenuated follicular growth among captives indicated that other (supplementary) factors are also involved in controlling the reproductive cycle. Next experiment examined if sparrows underwent seasonal variations in their response to stimulatory effects of long day lengths. When birds were transferred every month over a period of 1 year to 16 hours light:8 hours darkness (16L:8D) for 17–26 weeks, there was indeed a time-of-year effect on the growth-regression cycle of gonads. The final experiment investigated response of house sparrows to a variety of light-dark (LD) cycles. In the first set, sparrows were exposed for 31 weeks to photoperiods that were close to what they receive in between the period from sunrise to sunset at this latitude: 9L:15D (close to shortest day length in December), 12L:12D (equinox, in March and September) 15L:9D (close to longest day length in June). They underwent testicular growth and regression and molt in 12L and 15L photoperiods, but not in 9L photoperiod. In the second set, sparrows were exposed for 17 weeks to photoperiods with light periods extending to different duration of the daily photosensitivity rhythm (e.g. 2L:22D, 6L:18D, 10L:14D, 14L:10D, 18L:6D and 22L:2D). Interestingly, a slow and small testicular response occurred under 2L and 10L photoperiods; 6L:18D was non-inductive. On the other hand, 14L, 18L and 22L photoperiods produced testicular growth and subsequent regression response as is typical of a long day photostimulation. CONCLUSION: Subtropical house sparrows exhibit photoperiodic responses similar to that is reported for its population living at high latitudes. This may suggest the conservation of the photoperiodic control mechanisms in birds evolved over a long period of time, as a physiological strategy in a temporally changing environment ensuring reproduction at the best suited time of the year

    Influence of Soybean Oil or Non-Soybean Oil Based Lipid Emulsions on Parenteral Nutrition Associated Liver Disease in Late Preterm and Term Infants

    Background: Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is a life-saving therapy given to neonates with intestinal failure. However, infants on long-term TPN may experience Parenteral Nutrition-Associated Liver Disease (PNALD). New formulations for lipid emulsions are purportedly better than the traditional soy-based lipid emulsions (SLE). Our primary objective was to determine the prevalence of PNALD in infants who received non-soybean-based lipid emulsions (NSLE) or SLE. Methods: In this retrospective study, medical records of all infants admitted to a tertiary neonatal intensive care unitfrom 2004 to 2013 were reviewed. Late preterm (34 -36 weeks of gestation) and term infants who were on TPN for more than two weeks were included. Their demographic data and clinical variables were collected. Results: 208 infants received SLE for more than two weeks. The prevalence rate of PNALD in those who received SLE was 21% while that of those who received the NSLE was 17%. No significant difference was found between the ‘Soy’ or ‘NonSoy’ subgroups (p = 0.315). Seventy infants received TPN for more than four weeks. The prevalence rate of PNALD in infants who received SLE and NSLE was 35% and 25% respectively. No significant statistical difference was found between the ‘Soy’ or ‘NonSoy’ subgroups (p = 0.132). Conclusions: The type of lipid emulsion does not significantly influence the rate of PNALD in late preterm and term infants on long-term TPN
