    A Machine Learning-Based Method for Modelling a Proprietary SO2 Removal System in the Oil and Gas Sector

    The aim of this study is to develop a model for a proprietary SO2 removal technology by using machine learning techniques and, more specifically, by exploiting the potentialities of artificial neural networks (ANNs). This technology is employed at the Eni oil and gas treatment plant in southern Italy. The amine circulating in this unit, that allows for a reduction in the SO2 concentration in the flue gases and to be compliant with the required specifications, is a proprietary solvent; thus, its composition is not publicly available. This has led to the idea of developing a machine learning (ML) algorithm for the unit description, with the objective of becoming independent from the licensor and more flexible in unit modelling. The model was developed in MatLab® by implementing ANNs and the aim was to predict three targets, namely the flow rate of SO2 that goes to the Claus unit, the emissions of SO2, and the flow rate of steam sent to the regenerator reboiler. These represent, respectively, the two physical outputs of the unit and a proxy variable of the amine quality. Three different models were developed, one for each target, that employed the Levenberg–Marquardt optimization algorithm. In addition, the ANN topology was optimized case by case. From the analysis of the results, it emerged that with a purely data-driven technique, the targets can be predicted with good accuracy. Therefore, this model can be employed to better manage the SO2 removal system, since it allows for the definition of an optimal control strategy and the maximization of the plant’s productivity by not exceeding the process constraints

    Enamel fluorosis in rat’s incisor: S.E.M. and T.E.M. investigation

    Findings on the alterations taking place in the enamel have demonstrated that they are generally caused by a daily use of highly fluoritic drinking waters.According to that, the Authors have carried out an ultrastructural study on lower incisors of albino rats after administering for 60 days water with a fluorine concentration five times the normal one.The samples, studied under the S.E.M., showed a general slowing of both the deposition and the maturation phase as well as the presence of some hypomineralized areas even after eruption.All this suggested the possibility that the damages observed were not due to the direct effect of fluorine on the enamel, but to the interaction between fluorine and ameloblasts.The Authors have then carried out an ultrastructural study on the enamel organ using the S.E.M.The results showed the presence of a well-evident endoplasmic reticulum, the lack in dense granules during the secretion phase, the lack in ruffle ended webs during the modulation phase, and the mitochondrial damage in the ameloblast.All this could justify the slowing of the enamel mineralization caused by fluorine effect on the ameloblasts.Il a été démontré que des altérations de l’émail sont généralement dues à l’absorption quotidienne d’eaux de boissons riches en fluor.Les auteurs ont entrepris une étude ultrastructurale des incisives inférieures du rat ayant reçu pendant 60 jours de l’eau dont la concentration en fluor est 5 fois supérieure à la normale.Les échantillons étudiés en microscopie électronique à balayage ont montré un ralentissement global de la déposition et de la phase de maturation ainsi que la présence de territoires hypominéralisés même après l’éruption.Toutes ces constatations suggèrent la possibilité que les dommages observés ne sont pas dus à l’effet direct du fluor sur l’émail, mais aux interactions entre le fluor et les améloblastes.Les auteurs ont mené une étude ultrastructurale de l’émail en utilisant le microscope électronique à balayage.Les résultats ont montré la présence d’un réticulum endoplasmique bien apparent, l’absence de grains denses au cours de la phase secrétoire, l’absence d’extrémités membranaires rugueuses au cours de la phase de modulation, et des altérations des mitochondries dans les améloblastes.Toutes ces constatations pourraient expliquer le ralentissement de la minéralisation de l’émail causé par les effets du fluor sur les améloblastes

    Does Ménière's Disease in the Elderly Present Some Peculiar Features?

    Object. Aim of our study was to establish some peculiar features of Ménière's Disease (MD) in a group of elderly MD patients, in which the first vertigo spell happened when over 65 years old. Material and Methods. We analyzed a group of 73 younger than 65-years-old and a group of 30 elderly MD patients. All patients underwent a neurotological evaluation, an anamnestic evaluation including a lifetime history of migraine, and blood withdrawal for autoantibody screening. Results. Some differences were found between elderly and younger MD patients. Elderly MD patients presented a higher prevalence of Tumarkin attacks and a lower prevalence of lifetime history of migraine; moreover, they presented a faster develop of hearing loss and vertigo spells than a subgroup of 32 younger patients matched for the duration of illness. Conclusions. Some clinical features of MD in elderly have been pointed out. Particularly, the lower rate of migrainous history and positivity for autoantibodies often associated with MD, in our opinion, support the hypothesis of a vascular disorder acting as a predisposing factor for MD in elderly

    Immunohistochemical localization and functional characterization of somatostatin receptor subtypes in a corticotropin releasing hormone-secreting adrenal phaeochromocytoma: review of the literature and report of a case

    Somastostatin receptors are frequently expressed in phaeochromocytoma but data on somatostatin receptor subtyping are scanty and the functional response to the somatostatin analogue octretide is still debated.We report an unusual case of pheochromocytoma, causing ectopic Cushing’s syndrome due to CRH production by the tumour cells, in a 50-yr-old woman. Abdominal computed tomography revealed an inhomogeneous, 9-cm mass in the right adrenal gland, and [111In-DTPA0] octreotide scintigraphy showed an abnormal uptake of the radiotracer in the right perirenal region, corresponding to the adrenal mass. The patient underwent laparoscopic surgery and formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded samples were studied. The tumour was extensively characterized by immunohistochemistry and somatostatin receptor (SSTRs) subtypes expression was analyzed. Histological and immunohistochemical examination of the surgical specimens displayed a typical pheochromocytoma, which was found to be immunoreative to S-100, chromogranin A and neurofilaments. Immunostaining for SSTR subtypes showed a positive reaction for SSTR1, SSTR2A, SSTR2B, antisera on tumour cells. The intense and diffuse immunostaining for corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) antiserum indicated that Cushing’s disease was dependent on CRH overproduction by the pheochromocytoma, in which no immunostaining for adrenocorticotropic hormone was found. Our report confirms the heterogeneity of the pattern of SSTR expression in pheochromocytomas, and provide further evidence for functional SSTR subtype SSTR2a in a subgroup of pheochromocytomas, suggesting that these tumours may represent potential target for octreotide treatment

    A decision support system for Rey-Osterrieth complex figure evaluation

    Objective: The Rey Osterrieth complex figure (ROCF) is one of the most used neuropsychological tests for the assessment of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. In the copy test, the patient has to draw a replica of a 18-pattern image and the outcome is a score based on the accuracy of the overall drawing. The standard scoring system however have limitations related to its subjective nature and its inability to evaluate other cognitive domains than constructional abilities. Previous works addressed those problems by proposing tablet-based automated evaluation systems. Even promising, such methods are still far away from clinical validation and translation. In this work, we developed a decision support system (DSS) for the evaluation of the ROCF copy test in the common practice using retrospective information from previously performed drawings. The goal of our system was to support the professionals providing a qualitative judgement for each of the 18 patterns, estimating the most probable diagnosis for the patient, and identifying the main signs associated to the obtained diagnosis. Methods: A total of 250 human evaluated ROCF copies were scanned from 57 healthy subjects, 131 individuals with MCI, and 62 individuals with dementia. The images were pre-processed and analysed using both computer vision and deep learning techniques to assign a qualitative label to the 18 patterns. Then, the 18 labels were used as features in 3 binary (healthy VS MCI, healthy VS dementia, MCI VS dementia) and a 3-class classifications with model explanation (SHAP).Results: Very good to excellent performance were obtained in all the diagnosis classification tasks. Indeed, an accuracy of about 85%, 91%, and 83% was obtained in discriminating healthy subjects from MCI, healthy subjects from dementia and MCI from dementia respectively. An accuracy of 73% was achieved in the 3-class classification. The model explanation showed which patterns are responsible for each prediction and how the importance of some patterns changes according to the severity of the cognitive decline. Significance: The proposed DSS enriches the standard evaluation and interpretation of the ROCF copy test. Being trained with retrospective knowledge, the performance of the DSS can be further enhanced by extending the dataset with existing ROCF copies

    Multi-component Transparent Conducting Oxides: Progress in Materials Modelling

    Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) play an essential role in modern optoelectronic devices through their combination of electrical conductivity and optical transparency. We review recent progress in our understanding of multi-component TCOs formed from solid-solutions of ZnO, In2O3, Ga2O3 and Al2O3, with a particular emphasis on the contributions of materials modelling, primarily based on Density Functional Theory. In particular, we highlight three major results from our work: (i) the fundamental principles governing the crystal structures of multi-component oxide structures including (In2O3)(ZnO)n, named IZO, and (In2O3)m(Ga2O3)l(ZnO)n, named IGZO; (ii) the relationship between elemental composition and optical and electrical behaviour, including valence band alignments; (iii) the high-performance of amorphous oxide semiconductors.     Correlations between isospin dynamics and Intermediate Mass Fragments emission time scales: a probe for the symmetry energy in asymmetric nuclear matter

    We show new data from the 64^{64}Ni+124^{124}Sn and 58^{58}Ni+112^{112}Sn reactions studied in direct kinematics with the CHIMERA detector at INFN-LNS and compared with the reverse kinematics reactions at the same incident beam energy (35 A MeV). Analyzing the data with the method of relative velocity correlations, fragments coming from statistical decay of an excited projectile-like (PLF) or target-like (TLF) fragments are discriminated from the ones coming from dynamical emission in the early stages of the reaction. By comparing data of the reverse kinematics experiment with a stochastic mean field (SMF) + GEMINI calculations our results show that observables from neck fragmentation mechanism add valuable constraints on the density dependence of symmetry energy. An indication is found for a moderately stiff symmetry energy potential term of EOS.Comment: Talk given by E.
