    Net energy analysis of solar and conventional domestic hot water systems in Melbourne, Australia

    It is commonly assumed that solar hot water systems save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Very rarely has the life-cycle energy requirements of solar hot water systems been analysed, including their embodied energy. The extent to which solar hot water systems save energy compared to conventional systems in Melbourne, Australia, is shown through a comparative net energy analysis. The solar systems provided a net energy saving compared to the conventional systems after 0.5 to 2 years, for electricity and gas systems respectively.<br /

    Thermal Fluctuations and Rubber Elasticity

    The effects of thermal elastic fluctuations in rubber materials are examined. It is shown that, due to an interplay with the incompressibility constraint, these fluctuations qualitatively modify the large-deformation stress-strain relation, compared to that of classical rubber elasticity. To leading order, this mechanism provides a simple and generic explanation for the peak structure of Mooney-Rivlin stress-strain relation, and shows a good agreement with experiments.     Goldstone fluctuations in the amorphous solid state

    Goldstone modes in the amorphous solid state, resulting from the spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry due to random localisation of particles, are discussed. Starting from a microscopic model with quenched disorder, the broken symmetry is identified to be that of relative translations of the replicas. Goldstone excitations, corresponding to pure shear deformations, are constructed from long wavelength distortions of the order parameter. The elastic free energy is computed, and it is shown that Goldstone fluctuations destroy localisation in two spatial dimensions, yielding a two-dimensional amorphous solid state characterised by power-law correlations.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

    Scaling of Entropic Shear Rigidity

    The scaling of the shear modulus near the gelation/vulcanization transition is explored heuristically and analytically. It is found that in a dense melt the effective chains of the infinite cluster have sizes that scale sub-linearly with their contour length. Consequently, each contributes k_B T to the rigidity, which leads to a shear modulus exponent d\nu. In contrast, in phantom elastic networks the scaling is linear in the contour length, yielding an exponent identical to that of the random resistor network conductivity, as predicted by de Gennes'. For non-dense systems, the exponent should cross over to d\nu when the percolation length becomes much larger than the density-fluctuation length.Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps figure

    Soft random solids and their heterogeneous elasticity

    Spatial heterogeneity in the elastic properties of soft random solids is examined via vulcanization theory. The spatial heterogeneity in the \emph{structure} of soft random solids is a result of the fluctuations locked-in at their synthesis, which also brings heterogeneity in their \emph{elastic properties}. Vulcanization theory studies semi-microscopic models of random-solid-forming systems, and applies replica field theory to deal with their quenched disorder and thermal fluctuations. The elastic deformations of soft random solids are argued to be described by the Goldstone sector of fluctuations contained in vulcanization theory, associated with a subtle form of spontaneous symmetry breaking that is associated with the liquid-to-random-solid transition. The resulting free energy of this Goldstone sector can be reinterpreted as arising from a phenomenological description of an elastic medium with quenched disorder. Through this comparison, we arrive at the statistics of the quenched disorder of the elasticity of soft random solids, in terms of residual stress and Lam\'e-coefficient fields. In particular, there are large residual stresses in the equilibrium reference state, and the disorder correlators involving the residual stress are found to be long-ranged and governed by a universal parameter that also gives the mean shear modulus.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figure

    What is the Entanglement Length in a Polymer Melt ?

    We present results of molecular dynamics simulations of very long model polymer chains analyzed by various experimentally relevant techniques. The segment motion of the chains is found to be in very good agreement with the repatation model. We also calculated the plateau-modulus G_N. The predicitions of the entanglement length N_e from G_N and from the mean square displacements of the chains segments disagree by a factor of about 2.2(2), indicating an error in the prefactor in the standard formula for G_N. We show that recent neutron spin echo measurements were carried out for chain lengths which are too small for a correct determination of N_e.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, RevTe

    Making sense of ‘side effects’: Counterpublic health in the era of direct-acting antivirals

    Direct-Acting Antiviral (DAA) treatments for hepatitis C have been widely promoted by health promotion professionals and medical clinicians as being ‘side-effect free’. In this paper, we draw on data that troubles this approach. We used a mixed method design to collect data from people who inject drugs, and who were DAA treatment naïve, in New South Wales, Australia. We describe knowledge about and perceptions of DAA treatment. We found that concerns about side effects were commonplace – for example, one-third (37%) of participants who had not taken up treatment worried “a lot” about ‘side effects’ – and that these concerns were underpinned by a general distrust and suspicion of medical institutions and their technologies, including widespread negative associations linked to interferon treatment. In trying to make sense of this, we draw on the concept of counterpublic health and its recognition that the everyday health needs, knowledges and aspirations of subordinated citizens frequently contradict the normative frameworks governing public health interventions. We suggest that failing to engage with concerns about ‘side effects’ could hinder elimination efforts. Our analysis suggests that addressing the issue of ‘side effects’ within the ‘public’ discourse of DAAs will not dampen or damage elimination efforts, as some might fear, but rather it will legitimate the concerns of people who inject, decrease their suspicion of medical interventions, and better support the uptake of DAA treatments
