    A numerical model for the tidal oscillation and current in the Gulf of Tonkin

    in this paper results of a numerical model, based on the TIDEFLOW-2DSoftware, for the tidal oscillation and current in the Gulf of Tonkin (GT) are presented. The model was tested as follows: i) the observed values of the four main tidal constituents M2, S2, K1, 01 at the 44 coastal stations and islands were compared with computed ones; ii). the computed tidal levels were compared with the correlative ones in the Tide Tables at the six stations: Hon Gai, Cua Ong, Hon Dau, Cua Hoi, Cua Gianh and Cua Tung in many monthly periods; iii) the results of computed tidal levels and currents were compared with the observed data. The results of testing show a good agreement between the available data and computed values, therefore we can use this model for simulation t ide level and current of GT.     A hierarchical architecture for increasing efficiency of large photovoltaic plants under non-homogeneous solar irradiation

    Under non-homogeneous solar irradiation, photovoltaic (PV) panels receive different solar irradiance, resulting in a decrease in efficiency of the PV generation system. There are a few technical options to fix this issue that goes under the name of mismatch. One of these is the reconfiguration of the PV generation system, namely changing the connections of the PV panels from the initial configuration to the optimal one. Such technique has been widely considered for small systems, due to the excessive number of required switches. In this paper, the authors propose a new method for increasing the efficiency of large PV systems under non-homogeneous solar irradiation using Series-Parallel (SP) topology. In the first part of the paper, the authors propose a method containing two key points: a switching matrix to change the connection of PV panels based on SP topology and the proof that the SP-based reconfiguration method can increase the efficiency of the photovoltaic system up to 50%. In the second part, the authors propose the extension of the method proposed in the first part to improve the efficiency of large solar generation systems by means of a two-levels architecture to minimize the cost of fabrication of the switching matrix

    The status of southern white-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus siki) in Truong Son key biodiversity area

    The Southern white-cheeked crested gibbon, Nomascus siki, is an endemic primate to Vietnam and Laos, and has been identified as a nationally and globally endangered species (EN). However, little information is known on the status of the species in Vietnam generally and in the Truong Son key biodiversity area (Truong Son KBA) particularly. In order to explore the current status of the species in the Truong Son KBA, we conducted field surveys in 2018 and 2019. Analysis of the survey data shows 149 groups of gibbon in the 4 study areas. Combined with results of similar-techniqued survey in 2016 on the same species in Khe Nuoc Trong forest, we identified at least 252 gibbon groups and estimated 425 gibbon groups in the entire Truong Son KBA. These gibbon groups are mainly distributed in medium-rich evergreen closed forests in mountainous areas of the west Truong Son KBA, adjacent to the Vietnam-Laos border.

    All-dielectric Metamaterial for Electromagnetically-induced Transparency in Optical Region

    Metamaterial (MM) is emerging as a promising approach to manipulate electromagnetic waves, spanning from radio frequency to the optical region. In this paper, we employ an effect called electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in all-dielectric MM structures to create a narrow transparent window in opaque broadband of the optical region (580-670 nm). Using dielectric materials instead of metals can mitigate the large non-radiative ohmic loss on the metal surface. The unit-cell of MM consists of Silicon (Si) bars on Silicon dioxide (SiO2_{2}) substrate, in which two bars are directed horizontally and one bar is directed vertically. By changing the relative position and dimension of the Si bars, the EIT effect could be achieved. The optical properties of the proposed MM are investigated numerically using the finite difference method with commercial software Computer Simulation Technology (CST). Then, characteristic parameters of MM exhibiting EIT effect (EIT-MM), including Q-factor, group delay, are calculated to evaluate the applicability of EIT-MM to sensing and light confinement

    Organiser Team at ImageCLEFlifelog 2020: A Baseline Approach for Moment Retrieval and Athlete Performance Prediction using Lifelog Data

    For the LMRT task at ImageCLEFlifelog 2020, LIFER 3.0, a new version of the LIFER system with improvements in the user interface and system affordance, is used and evaluated via feedback from a user experiment. In addition, since both tasks share a common dataset, LIFER 3.0 borrows some features from the LifeSeeker system deployed for the Lifelog Search Challenge; which are free-text search, visual similarity search and elastic sequencing filter. For the SPLL task, we proposed a naive solution by capturing the rate of change in running speed and weight, then obtain the target changes for each subtask using average computation and linear regression model. The results presented in this paper can be used as comparative baselines for other participants in the ImageCLEFlifelog 2020 challenge.publishedVersio

    Results of magnetotelluric survey for studying geothermal system in the Bang area, Quang Binh province

    This paper presents the first results from the application of magnetotelluric method (MT) using the new equipment MTU 2000 (Canada) and analysis software to investigate the structure of geothermal area around the Bang hot water source (Quang Binh province). Results of data analysis by MT 1D and 2D models to a depth of 20 km show low resistivity zone in the southwest of Bang hot water (100°C) and allow for interpreting the structural elements of athehydro- geothermal system. This includes a very low resistivity layer at depth of 2 km suggesting a clay cap (heat resistive shield), a relatively low resistivity zone at depth ≥ 2 km reflecting  fractured rocks containing geothermal fluid and hot steam. A lower resistivity body at depth of 12-14 km located about 1.5 km from the hot water source indicates the existence of a heat source or a hot mass of intrusive magma., commonly thought to be sources of typical hydro- geothermal systems potential for energy exploitation.     PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS FROM CALLISTEMON CITRINUS LEAVES AND STEMS

    In the search for bioactive constituents from Vietnamese plants,  the leaves and stems of Callistemon citrinus (Curtis) Skeels were selected for chemical investigation. Phytochemical analysis of plant led to the isolation of eight phenolic compounds including two flavonoids (eucalyptine (1) and 8-demethyleucalyptine (2)), two alcohols (blumenol A (3), n-tetratriacontanol (4)), three benzoic acid derivatives (acid gallic (5), methyl gallate (6) protocatechuic acid (7)), one sterol (b-sitosterol (8)), and along with one sesquiterpene (2,6,10-bisabolatriene (9)). The structures of the natural compounds were determined by spectroscopic evidences including 1D- and 2D-NMR and ESI-MS

    CHOLESTANE-TYPE STEROIDS FROM THE OCTOCORAL Verrucella corona

    Using various chromatographic separations, three cholestane-type steroids were isolated from the methanol extract of the octocoral Verrucella corona. Their structures were elucidated to be (22E)-cholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol-7-one (1), trans-liagosterol (2), and guggulsterol-II (3), by detailed analysis of the 1D and 2D-NMR data as well as comparison with those reported. Among them, compound 2 showed significant cytotoxicity against eight human cancer cell lines as HepG2, HL-60, KB, LNCaP, LU-1, MCF7, SK-Mel2, and SW480

    Polyhydroxylated sterols from the soft coral sarcophyton pauciplicatum

    The methanol extract of the soft coral Sarcophyton pauciplicatum afforded four sterols as (24S)-ergostane-3β,5α,6β,25-tetraol 25-monoacetate (1), (24S)-ergostane-3β,5α,6β,25-tetraol (2), (24S)-ergostane-1β,3β,5α,6β,25-pentaol 25-monoacetate (3), and (24S)-ergost-25-ene-1β,3β,5α,6β-tetraol (4) after subjecting it to various chromatographic experiments. The structures of isolated compounds were elucidated by 1D and 2D-NMR experiments and comparison of their NMR data with reported values. This is the first report of these compounds from                       S. pauciplicatum
