Characterizing magnesium–silicon binaries in Al–Mg–Si supersaturated solid solution by first-principles calculations

AbstractMagnesium silicide Mg2Si is a well-studied binary of Mg and Si due to its potential technological applications like infrared photonic and thermoelectric. In many experimental scenarios, e.g., in supersaturated solid solution of Al–Mg–Si, some other Mg-Si binaries, e.g., Mg9Si5 and Mg5Si6, co-exist with Mg2Si. It was then computationally found that Mg9Si5 and Mg5Si6 are thermodynamically favorable under some non-zero pressures. Other than this, very little is known about these two new binaries. This paper aims to unveil some structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of Mg9Si5 and Mg5Si6, providing some information that may be useful for further possible investigations on the Al–Mg–Si solid solution

Leadership Practice for Building Trust of Followers: Decisive Factors of Organizational Performance

Purpose - Leadership plays a decisive role in key organizational outcomes. To investigate the effects of leadership and its mechanism on organizational performance, this paper examined how transformational leadership impacts followers’ trust for improving operational and financial performance in the case of Vietnamese firms. Design/Methodology - This study used the Structural Equation Modeling to assess the correlation among the constructs based on using survey data of 285 employees at 60 manufacturing and service companies. Findings - The findings revealed that employees' trust in leadership acts as a mediating mechanism in the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational performance. The transformational leadership style of leaders has greater effects on financial performance, while employee’s trust has larger effects on operational performance. This study calls attention to the importance of raising employee trust to link transformational leadership and organizational performance. Practical and theoretical implications - From a practical point of view, the paper brings more knowledge and insights for CEO/managers on the right pathway to enhance organizational performance. The paper also provides theoretical initiatives on the leadership theory and the new pathway to promote operational and financial performance

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Nd2_{2}Fe14_{14}B as the origin of spin reorientation and rotating magnetocaloric effect

The mechanism of spin reorientation in Nd2_{2}Fe14_{14}B, which is a host crystal of a well-known neodymium permanent magnet, is studied by combining first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The spin reorientation is thought to be derived from crystal field effects and gets less attention because of the undesirable property for hard magnet application. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions are usually less attractive or often ignored in rare-earth bulk systems, including permanent magnets such as Nd2_{2}Fe14_{14}B since people believe that the magnetic anisotropy is more dominant than the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. However, in this study, we have found, for the first time, that the spin reorientation in Nd2_{2}Fe14_{14}B is attributed to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. We have found, furthermore, the spin reorientation in Nd2_{2}Fe14_{14}B yields a great stage of rotating magnetocaloric effect at practical application level. We have found that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions definitely contributes to the physical properties as a non-negligible effect in magnetic materials
