Gymnasia in Eastern Sicily of the Hellenistic and Roman Period
A Reassessment of the Urban Context of the Republican Baths (VIII 5, 36)
gedeutet. Dieser Beitrag untersucht kritisch diese These,
basierend auf neuen Forschungen (Topoi C-6-8 Projekt, 2015–
Crowded or Empty Spaces? The Statuary Decoration of the ‘Palaestrae’ in Pompeii and Herculaneum
Broad-band X-ray spectra of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft -ray repeaters: pulsars in a weak-accretion regime ?
We present the results from the analysis of the broad-band X-ray spectra of 5
Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft -ray Repeaters (SGRs). We fit
their Suzaku and INTEGRAL spectra with models appropriate for the X-ray
emission from the accretion flow onto a pulsar. We find that their X-ray
spectra can be well described with this model. In particular we find that: (a)
the radius of the accretion column is m resulting in a transverse
optical depth of ; (b) the vertical Thompson optical depth is , and (c) their luminosity translates in accretion rates
. These results are in good agreement with the
predictions from the fall-back disk model, providing further support in the
interpretation of AXPs and SGRs as accreting pulsars.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages, 2 figure
Swimming Pools and Water Management in the Eastern Mediterranean World of the 4th to 1st Century BC
While it is debated in scholarship whether the Greeks conceptualized swimming as a sport and leisure activity, the archaeological evidence of swimming pools in the Eastern Mediterranean from the 4th to 1st century BC speaks for the existence of such a concept. This paper
argues that challenges of water management are a major reason why the Greeks did not systematically build swimming pools as an urban standard for the physical education and pleasure of broader parts of the population. By examining 13 pools, it is shown that their
water management required specific topographical conditions, notably, a location close to a river or a spring, and the appropriate socioeconomic conditions, notably, patrons with sufficient financial means, access to technological know-how, and cultural appreciation of
swimming
Report of the 2023 Season
The second excavation campaign at the Gymnasium of Agrigento aimed to resolve lingering questions regarding the gymnasium's extension and construction date. Results of both excavation seasons (2022, 2023) unveiled a stenopos running west of the race-track complex and pool, excavated for a length of 23 m. Noteworthy discoveries included the northwest corner of the gymnasium's insula and eight monumental walls on two terraces, suggestive of a substantial architectural complex. These structures exhibited characteristics consistent with the palaestra, supported by findings such as a stamped roof tile with the letters ΓΥΜ and evidence of a valve system and lead pipes in a room north of the pool
